Principal's Blog

Welcome to Week 6 Term 4  2023

Currently the school executive are working through classes and staffing for 2024. As you know student numbers directly influence staffing numbers and class structures. If your children are not returning to Caves Beach PS in 2024, can you please advise the office now. This allows us to make  adjustments and draft classes and make staff placements ready for the 2024 school year.

Goodbye and Goodluck

I wish to inform our Caves Beach School community that Mrs Michelle Thurston has now officially moved on from the Department of Education and is enjoying her new role as Programs Coordinator Hunter Area with The Smith Family. On behalf of all Caves Beach PS staff I would like to thank Mrs Thurston for her huge contribution to our school and her dedication and commitment to all the students lucky enough to have had her as their teacher. We all wish you the very best in your new role.

Make My Day

Last week I was thrilled to have Aiden, Ellie and Jonah from K6R visit to share with me their Maths activity. All three children were very excited to show the wonderful paper folding they had completed. Well done you have all shown amazing progress in all areas this year!

    Newcastle Permanent Maths Competition

Have a look at these superstars! Bailey, Connor and Owen were recognised this week as high performers in the Newcastle Permanent Maths Competition. These students attended a special award ceremony at the Newcastle Permanent Centre of Excellence and were included in a recent newspaper article. This is the second year that Bailey and Connor have been recognised for their achievements in mathematics. Visiting Band Performance

What a fabulous day on Thursday last week! Our senior band workshopped a piece of new music with our visiting band from Narrabeen Lakes PS.

The whole school was also treated to concert featuring CBPS senior band, junior band and choir as well as NLPS senior band, choir and year 6 ensemble.

Well done band and choir!! Thank you for visiting us Narrabeen Lakes!

    Science Fair

Thank you to our amazing Stage 3 students who put together really engaging projects to show today. All students in K-4 really enjoyed the experience!

    Grow Your Mind

Another strength you can grow is LEADERSHIP

Showing LEADERSHIP means inspiring others by being respectful and confident in group situations in the classroom, on the playground or at home.

When we show LEADERSHIP we use our WISE OWL.

This strength is important for our mental health because we feel proud when we inspire someone.

    You can display LEADERSHIP by:

    • being fair when deciding what to do as a group and listening to each person
    • coming up with a game and organizing others to play in a respectful way

Set yourself a ‘LEADERSHIP’ challenge today!

    Learning and Support

Getting To Know You - Q&A

Debi Davis - School Learning Support Officer

    Tell us something about yourself

I have been working at Caves Beach Public School for approx 15 years starting as an SLSO (school learning support officer). For the last three years I have been dividing my week between working in the office as a SAO (school administration officer) two days a week and in classrooms three days per week.

What does a SLSO do at school?

SLSOs work alongside classroom teachers and the learning support team within the school. We support students who may require additional help with a wide variety of needs.

What is the most rewarding part of being an SLSO?

The most rewarding part of being a SLSO for me is helping kids achieve that ‘light bulb’ moment and the confidence they then show once they grasp a concept.

    Band - Week 6 Update

Another busy 2 weeks has passed for band! We have held a wonderful Family Band Night, hosted a visiting band from Sydney with a combined workshop and whole school concert and we have started the transition to new bands for 2024, including welcoming over 30 new players to training band!  Thank you to all families and staff for supporting all of these events.

We have a few more events coming up with Band presentation night (see below) and performances at various assemblies in the final few weeks of school.

Band Presentation Night - Save the date!

Band presentation night will be held on  Wednesday 29th November, 6pm - 8pm, in the school hall. This night showcases junior, senior and combined band as well as our year 6 students. Annual awards, gifts and certificates are presented at this night.

    Rehearsals Week 6 - 9

There is a change to rehearsals for some band members for the remainder of the year.

    Music tutors

Please ensure you contact your child's tutor if they are unable to attend a scheduled lesson. There are  a few tutors adding new days and times to work around school events and new student numbers, thank you tutors and families for being flexible!

    New Band members

Welcome new families! I hope all your children have enjoyed receiving their instruments and starting the process of playing in band. It has been a busy week on the teacher side with so many new players, it is wonderful!

If your child has not yet received their instrument they will be able to collect it Tuesday (tomorrow) at band rehearsal.

Fees are now displayed in the school bytes system for new members. We will continue to add new students as they join.

For anyone else wanting to sign up, the school has almost exhausted its collection of instruments for hire! There are still 2 trombones, a french horn and 3 saxophones available. Please contact Mrs Scott before making any payments for new members to ensure we have what your child is after.

If you have your own instrument you are very welcome to sign up at any time.

Fees - 2023 Junior and Senior Band - members from all of 2023 school year.

Fees for term 4 are now due:

Individual reminders were sent home last week for those families who are not up to date with fees for 2023.

It is very important that fees are up to date for 2023 as the band will transition to a new payment procedure in 2024.

    Senior band - $65

    Junior Band - $55

Yearly instrument hire fee - $100 - only for members who hire from the school and take the instrument home - clarinets, flutes, trumpets, saxophones, trombones, bass guitar.
