PRINCIPAL’S THOUGHTS

Messages from Mr Dill

2023 School Athletics Carnival

Congratulations to every student who participated with wonderful energy and enthusiasm in the 2023 School Athletics Carnival on Wednesday.

The carnival is a highlight of the school year with our young athletes showing us their grit and determination to achieve their personal best in every event entered.

I would like to sincerely thank Mrs Leigh Russ and the stage 2 teachers for organising an outstanding carnival and acknowledge all of our parents and parent volunteers who supported the event.  Lastly, thank you to the team from Zing Activ who prepared the students for the carnival through the PE lessons this term and shared their expertise on the day.

Excursions Involving Bus Travel

Over the years for all excursions involving bus travel, the school ensures that coaches with seat belts are employed.  While this is an additional cost to families compared to bus travel with no seatbelts, the safety of students is our highest priority.

Other steps taken to support safe travel on overnight excursions include: engaging with coach companies that exceed the coach industry regulations, that check that seat belts are in good working order, have experienced drivers, and fatigue management strategies including flexible itineraries.  If you have any questions in relation to our excursions involving coach travel, please contact the school.

Education Week 2023

Education Week 2023 will be held from 31 July to 4 August 2023 (Week 3, Term 3) with our open day at Drummoyne PS on Tuesday 1st August.

This year’s theme is 175 years of public education in NSW and focuses on learning from our past, celebrating our achievements and embracing the future with confidence.

The program for our open day will be developed in the coming weeks and we look forward to having you join us.

Refugee Week - Finding Freedom

Next week is Refugee Week and the theme is 'Finding Freedom.' The focus is on the contributions and successes that refugees bring to the wider community. Led by our EAL/D teachers Michelle O'Dowd and Kim Dionatos, class teachers will be taking the opportunity to explain the plight of refugees to their classes.

This year there are 102.6 million people around the world who are displaced. This represents around 1.5% of the world's population! At DPS, we are supporting a small number of students who have been identified as refugees and have suffered the trauma of being displaced. Please think of them this week.

Service NSW vouchers expire soon on 30 June

If you have outstanding fees due for Zing Activ or the school contributions please email a photo of your voucher or come to the office and we can redeem them for you and credit your account towards these payments. Service NSW vouchers expire on 30 June.

 Smart Energy Schools Pilot Project

Under the Smart Energy Schools Pilot Project, solar and battery storage systems have now been installed on the roof of the school hall and COLA. As one of 60 schools in the State, we have begun to generate, store and reuse energy and even share energy with the community.

We will be able to access energy data from the systems via an online portal and use the data in teaching and learning activities in the school.

This project is the largest schools-based trial of solar battery energy storage and Virtual Power Plant technology in Australia.

Our student environmental leaders will be taking the lead in sharing the progress of this project.

FROM THE DEPUTY'S DESK

Class of the Week - STEAM

Stage 2 STEAM students experimented with natural materials to build a shelter. Their focus was to determine if the material chosen was well suited to its purpose. A lot of time and care was taken and the end results are impressive.

Road Safety

Given the location of our school at the intersection of busy streets, please take road safety seriously every day.

The Safety Town website is a suite of digital and non-digital teaching and learning activities to support the teaching of road safety from Kindergarten to Year 6 in NSW primary schools.

The website includes interactive activities, comprehensive teaching notes, links to relevant transport information, and updated information for parents and carers.

Safety Town helps parents to reinforce road safety messages and concepts that are taught at school. Please see the link below.

COVID SAFETY UPDATES

RAT kits are available from the school office

RAT kits were sent home with all students at the end of Term 1 and will be sent home to year 6 students prior to their Canberra overnight excursion.

Even so, if any children are experiencing COVID symptoms and parents would like another box of RAT'S for continued testing, please call or visit the office to arrange collection.

COVID-smart measures in schools

Our layered COVID-smart measures – staying home if unwell, hygiene and cleaning practices, testing for COVID-19, masks strongly encouraged and ventilation – will continue this term. More details on our Advice for families page.

NSW Health advise that during the winter months, COVID will continue to present a health risk to the community. Accordingly, schools will implement baseline COVID-smart measures to help reduce the risk of transmission for students and staff members. These key COVID-smart measures include:

  • staying home and getting tested if unwell, and only attending school when symptom free.

  • rapid antigen testing for symptomatic students and staff. Please contact us for test kits.

Staying home when sick

With flu cases on the rise, we would like to remind you that simple hygiene such as regularly washing hands will help stop the spread of the potentially deadly virus.

Students are asked to stay home when sick. They should only attend school when they are symptom free.

Parents and carers who have children with persistent or ongoing symptoms of flu or COVID 19 are encouraged to have these assessed by their local health care professional. These symptoms may be related to other illnesses (e.g. allergies or hay fever) that require treatment and management by a doctor.

LIBRARY NEWS

New books in the library

Here are some more of the new books we have in the library. Check them out!

Travel under the sea into the realm of the weird and wonderful weedy seadragon.

Can you imagine a strange and colourful fish that looks like a dragon? It can’t fly or breathe fire, but it is an excellent dancer!

When Cassie runs away from her dreary boarding school, in search of her missing mother, she ends up in the magical village of Hedgely and discovers she comes from a family of witches - women who protect Britain from the denizens of Faerie, who are all too real and far more frightening than the story books suggest.

'Magical in every sense of the word' Eoin Colfer

Step into the magical world of Hedgewitch, where the land of Faerie lies just beyond our own, in this enchanting new series for children age 9+ and readers of Nevermoor, The Worst Witch and The Dark Is Rising.

Twelve-year-old Cici has just moved from Taiwan to Seattle, and the only thing she wants more than to fit in at her new school is to celebrate her grandmother, A-má’s, seventieth birthday together.

Since she can’t go to A-má, Cici cooks up a plan to bring A-má to her by winning the grand prize in a kids’ cooking contest to pay for A-má’s plane ticket! There’s just one problem: Cici only knows how to cook Taiwanese food.

“Surfing in the Dark” tells the story of Matt Formston — a world champion surfer who is blind. Meet Matt and hear his amazing story of resilience as he follows his dreams no matter the obstacles. Matt always dreamed of becoming a professional surfer, but by the time he was five years old he was almost completely blind. Matt never let that stop him and now he is a record-holding cycling Paralympian and a world champion surfer!

Code Club - important information

A reminder that Code Club won’t be on again this term. Code Club will resume in Term 3 on 20 July.

Sydney East PSSA girls football championships

On Tuesday, the girls Sydney East Regional PSSA football (soccer) tournament was held at Kareela Oval.  DPS was represented by Gabrielle Buckman as a member of the Inner West team. The tournament included 12 teams who were divided into two pools.

Inner West lost their first game 3-0 to Botany Bay but rallied to go through the remaining four games undefeated, beating Western Suburbs 2-0, Wylie Park 3-0, Eastern Suburbs 2-0 and Cronulla 1-0.  They qualified second in their pool and had to play the winner of the other pool, namely Engadine, in the semi final. They defeated Engadine 1-0 to set up a final against Botany Bay.  In a see-saw game the final score of 0-0 saw both teams being declared equal winners!

Well done Gabi!

GENERAL NEWS

Tap on and tap off, every time you travel by bus

Our school is partnering with the local school bus operator, Busways, to support a new Tap On and Tap Off education campaign encouraging students who travel by bus to correctly use their school Opal cards. Busways is implementing this campaign throughout Term 3, 2023. This campaign will focus on a simple message – tap on and tap off every time you travel by bus.

Why is tapping on and off on the bus important?

The use of Opal cards is the primary way bus operators and Transport for NSW analyse demand for bus services. When students don’t use their Opal cards, their trip is not recorded. Therefore, buses may appear underutilised. Tapping on and off provides better data to plan better bus services. How can you help? If your child travels to school by bus, please ensure your child has a valid Opal card (either a School or Child/Youth Opal card).

Visit Transport for NSW website to apply for a school Opal card. Students may see onboard bus posters and Busways Community Relation Officers at afternoon loadings. Together let’s get students into good habits of tapping on and tapping off with their Opal card.

Thank you for your support with this campaign.
