A message from Julie

On Thursday September 21, many of our year 5 and 6 students had the opportunity to participate in the South Australian Public Primary Schools Festival of Music. Students performed in an amazing concert on the stage of the Festival Theatre in the city. It was a long day for students and staff involved, leaving school at 11am and not joining their families until after their concert finished at 9:15pm. A special mention to Albert, who represented our school as part of the orchestra. An amazing experience for all and a spectacular event. Thank you to all involved, especially Ms Barry, our Choir Teacher and Ms Amy and Julie W for helping support students on the day.

You may have noticed that there have been a few more changes to the butterfly garden near the Junior Primary gate. The students in P3, along with Garden Club, supported by Hillary and Ms Leonards have been working to install stepping stones and more plantings. Next steps are the addition of an irrigation system, mulch and more butterfly attracting flowers.

Over the school holidays, Dernancourt School will be involved in ‘Operation School Safe’ run by SAPOL. There will be extra patrols visiting the school over the break to help keep our school grounds safe. If you happen to be on the grounds over the holidays, please report any suspicious behaviour to SAPOL. Thank you for helping to look after our school.

Thank you to our wonderful Road Crossing Monitors this term. Each week both before and after school, 3 trained students join a teacher to help our school community cross the road safely. It has been great to see more families use the school crossing over the last few weeks. We encourage students to cross the road using the crossing to avoid crossing near the ‘Kiss and Drop’ zone outside the Junior Primary gate. The crossing monitors have enjoyed greeting the new and extra customers each day.

I am looking forward to seeing students in their casual clothes on Friday. SRC have organised the casual day and ask that students bring a gold coin along in support of the RSPCA.

Well, we have almost made it to the end of term 3. It is hard to believe that when we return to school on October 16, we will only have 9 weeks left of the 2023 school year. I hope you all enjoy the time with your families, and we look forward to seeing you again at the beginning of term 4.

Office hours during holidays

The office will be open on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday of Week 1 of the school holidays between 9:00am and 3:00pm.

In the second week of the holidays the office will be open on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday from 9:00am until 3:00pm.

After School Playground Reminder

Dear Families

We appreciate that a number of families enjoy using the school playgrounds after school. When doing so, we just ask that you please be mindful that OSHC utilises the playground as part of its approved space. To assist with our duty of care, we would greatly appreciate it if you could please ensure that your children are supervised in a separate area to the OSHC children. Typically, the OSHC routine involves use of the "Primary’’ playground between 3:30pm and 4:00pm, and the ‘’Early Years’’ playground between 4:00pm and 5:00pm. We also use the ‘’Japanese Garden’’ and ‘’Crow’s Nest’’ throughout this period.

We thank you for your understanding and cooperation.

Regards

Tom Kibble

SRC News

Our apple trees are looking very healthy. Our SRC reps are continuing to help with watering our trees, which is particularly important as the days get warmer.

The end of Term 3 casual day gold coin donations will go towards the RSPCA. Children have decided they would like to wear casual clothes of their choice for this term.

We have raised $44.50 from our recycling of cans and cartons so far this year. SRC reps are in the process of deciding what we should use this money for.

We have started planning for our Term 4 disco. More information about the disco will be given early next term.

Garden Club News

Garden Club News

Our Garden club members for Week 8 were Aarna J3, Chloe J4, Sami P2, Isabella P8 and Dino P7. After a warm, sunny weekend it was important for us to water all of the new flowers and agapanthus we had planted from the previous week. With the help of some children from P3 we finished planting the remainder of the agapanthuses around the edge of the butterfly garden. Our new garden is really looking good. Well done to everyone who has helped with this project.

Our Boys and Girls Flag Rugby teams participated in a carnival day on the 11th of September at Ridgehaven Primary. The students got to play small games against other schools and test their skills which they've also been learning during P.E. We had great weather and students all said they really enjoyed it even when nervous at the beginning of the day. Thanks to Nat for being a parent volunteer on the day as without parent volunteer's days like this are t possible.

AusBike

Ausbike Details

I am getting in touch as we are now opening registrations for our new national ‘Learn to Ride’ program called AusBike.  The fun cycling program is being run at the Adelaide Super-Drome, 50 Anna Meares Wy, Gepps Cross SA 5094  by a local cycling club - Central Districts Cycling Club.

The program has been designed for 5-12 year olds who are just getting started in their cycling journey.  They will learn how to ride safely, with confidence under the guidance of an AusCycling accredited coach. Bike's & Helmet's will be provided at the centre for kids who don't own a bike. AusBike is supported by Australian Federal Government and Government of South Australia.

The Term 2 & 3 program has been a great success in other parts of the country with a group of kids learning how to ride safely, and a couple of kids even managing to get off their training wheels!

The Term 4 program is offered on Fridays from 05:00PM - 06:00PM and will commence on the 20th of October.  The cost of the program is $105 which is for 7 weeks. This is paid for upfront at the beginning of the program (like AusKick, Cricket Blast).

I have attached our National launch promotion video link (https://youtu.be/kycjjUBgKdc?si=3nXeeZCUbGAPDHPx) and flyer for your perusal.  It would be amazing if you could help in promoting this program in Dernancourt School R-7 social media, newsletter and other streams of promotion.

Here is the Registration Link where you can find some more information too.Hope to hear from you soon,

Savers Plus

Savers Plus - school camp costs

Good afternoon,

School camps are an amazing opportunity for your students.

But they can be stressful for some parents to afford.

I would appreciate you passing this information on to families who will have children attending camps in 2024.

Saver Plus will assist with their saving & budgeting for the camp.

Saver Plus encourages parents to save $50 a month (for 10 months). Their savings is then matched - a free $500 for education costs, making $1,000 available for the school camp.

Families that start saving in September, will have their savings ready to pay their school camp fees in July 2024.

Saver Plus will chat with your families about eligibility:

  • Health Care or Pensioner Concession Card
  • Payment from Centrelink and
  • Earning an income (employment, carer’s payment, or child support).

Saver Plus helps your families with budgeting for the cost to attend next year’s school camp.

Please share with your families via email, school newsletter, or social media post.

Thank you for your ongoing support.

Regards,
