Holbrook Public School

Quality education for all, in a secure and caring environment

ISSUE 15: Term 3, Week 9 - Tuesday, 12 September 2023

From the Principal's desk

SASS Recognition Week

Monday, 4 to Saturday, 9 September was School Administrative and Support Staff (SASS) Recognition Week, a time to acknowledge and thank the often-unsung heroes in our public schools. A huge thank you to our amazing SAS staff: Tracey, Judith, Mark, Sonja, Brenda, Liz, Wendy and Dani. Our SAS staff play an essential role in the school community. SAS staff work in school offices, classrooms, and libraries and maintain and care for school grounds and buildings. They are often the first people you see when you enter a school, they are often the ones to tend to students when they are unwell, and they ensure the efficient management of school financial and administration functions. Our SAS staff are essential to maintaining positive relationships with students, parents, and the community.

Tell Them From Me Parent Survey

We value your feedback and input in shaping the educational experience for your child. The "Tell Them From Me" Parent Survey is now open and will remain accessible until 20 October 2023. Your responses provide valuable insights into our school's strengths and areas for improvement. Please take a moment to complete the survey, as your input is instrumental in helping us better understand and meet the needs of our students and families. Prizes can be won for completing the Tell Them From Me Survey – please see more information in the newsletter.

Whole School Production Week

We are thrilled to announce that Whole School Production Week is finally here! This event is a celebration of the immense talent and creativity of both our staff and students. It promises to showcase drama, music, and creative skills. If you haven't already secured your tickets, it's not too late! Contact the front office for more information.

Trent Barrett Shield

On Tuesday, 5 September, we had two boys' rugby league teams and one girls' league tag team head to Jelbart Park for the Trent Barrett Shield. The boys went through undefeated, and the girls' team also had some success on the day.

Staffing

We warmly welcome Mrs Henderson, returning from maternity leave to take on the role of release from face-to-face teaching, and Miss Barraclough, returning from her overseas travel in Term 4. Miss Barraclough will work with our Year 5/6 Quokkas class for Term 4. We are delighted to have them both back with us.

Trial of New Bell Times

In Term 4, we will implement a trial of new bell times to better support student learning, particularly in literacy and numeracy. An analysis has informed these adjustments of student well-being data around play breaks. We aim to create a schedule that maximises student engagement and academic achievement while ensuring adequate time for breaks and relaxation. We appreciate your understanding and flexibility as we test these changes. We look forward to hearing feedback from our school community voice (students, staff, and parents) at the end of Term 4.

With the holiday break approaching and warmer weather on the horizon, we encourage all students and families to take the time to relax and spend quality time together. We appreciate your ongoing support and involvement in our school community. We wish you a safe and enjoyable holiday and look forward to seeing everyone back at school ready for the exciting challenges and opportunities that Term 4 will bring.

Go the Blues!

HOW DO PARENTS AND STUDENTS FIND THEIR TAP-ID AND PIN TO ACCESS THEIR RESULTS?

Students who have previously sat ICAS at our school can find their TAP-ID and PIN on the back of a previous year's certificate. Simple!

Students who have lost their previous ICAS certificate or sat ICAS at your school for the first time this year can request it via this link.

All students and parents can view their English results via the Student Results Portal here

Thank you!

The P&C has had a busy month raising money for the students and the school. We can only do this with the generous support of local businesses and our wonderful families!

We want to say a huge thank you!

Tania Saunders led the successful catering for the Kidney Kar Rally, supported on the day by Akear Boers, Joy Wearn, Tash Ziebell, Jos Burey, Sarah Finlay, Dannii Purcell and Christine Fuller. We also had delicious eggs donated by the Pincott family at Holbrook Paddock Eggs and the most fantastic soup, an absolute hit supplied by J&B’s at a very generous price. Thank you!

We also catered lunch at the Wirruna Bull sale for the Locke family; thank you to the Locke family for your continued support and to Jess Barr-Smith, Kelly Boers, Jos Burey and Akear Boers, who catered on the day.

For both of the above events and the upcoming Henty Field Days, the P&C has asked for a large number of cakes and slices from our families, and the fantastic support of so many has absolutely blown us away! We hope we haven’t missed anyone, but thank you too.

Early next year, the P&C, with the support of the HUME Bank, will be holding an outdoor community movie night, so keep an eye out for that, as it will be our big fundraiser for 2024!

We also ask parents to please take 15 minutes to complete the school's “Tell them from me Survey”. This survey is vital to ensure our school can continue to thrive and best meet the needs of our community.

Bernie O’Connor AFL/Netball Carnival

Students, teachers and parents had a fantastic day at the AFL/netball carnival at Yerong Creek on Friday, 1 September. The weather was beautiful, and the students had a full day of participation and competition. It was wonderful to see the students enjoying themselves and working together as a team throughout the day. A big thank you to the parents who helped out in many ways on the day and those who volunteered to take sporting gear home to wash. It is greatly appreciated and helps us smoothly run the carnival.

Congratulations to the Junior Division 2 netball team and the Junior Boys AFL Team A, who won in their respective divisions.

Jasmine Purcell represented Holbrook in the netball shooting competition and won the overall competition. Ollie Cardile represented Holbrook in the AFL goal-kicking competition and came second. Well done to both students.

Chrissy Lavis
Carnival Co-ordinator

We have thoroughly enjoyed connecting with our friends at the Greater Hume Children Services (GHCS). Each week, our very excited Year 5 students have the opportunity to read to the children at GHCS. The Year 5 students will be buddies for those attending Kindergarten at Holbrook Public School next year and have embraced their leadership role. It has been a delight to see the joy on the faces of all students as they read their favourite picture books and connect with the children at the centre. Thank you to Kimberly and the team at GHCS for their warm welcome.

If you have a child or know of a parent/carer wishing to enrol their child at our school next year, click on the link. Alternatively, please feel free to contact the school for more information.

See the information below for our dates for Transition in Term 4. We are so excited to welcome our kindergarten students for 2024!

Tell Them From Me Parent Survey

Complete the 2023 Tell Them From Me Parent Survey by Friday, 20 October 2023, and you will go into the draw for your chance to win one of six $30 Athlete’s Foot gift vouchers.

To help build an accurate and timely picture that schools can use for practical improvements, the parent survey appraises school principals and school leaders from parents’ perspectives on their school and their child’s learning at home. It also covers communication between parents and staff, activities and practices at home, and parents’ views on the school’s support of learning and positive behaviour.

The survey is anonymous and allows the school to identify trends within schools and better inform school priorities. The survey is held once a year, commencing in Term 3, and is run simultaneously as the teacher and student surveys. The parent survey takes around 15 minutes to complete. Parents with more than one child at the school may complete the survey more than once if they feel their children’s experiences differ.

As all surveys are anonymous, we will need you to take a screenshot of the final “Thanks for completing the online survey” page and either show it to one of our staff or email it to the school at holbrook-p.school@det.nsw.edu.au, and we will put your name into the draw.

Lunch order volunteers needed for Term 4

Do you have some free time on your calendar during Term 4? If so, we would value your time to help with lunch orders on Monday and/or Friday mornings. The process is simple:

  1. Sign in at the office,
  2. The students will put their lunch orders in their class baskets, located outside the canteen
  3. Sign out and take the baskets to the Holbrook Bakery.

It only takes around 45 minutes of your day, and your child loves seeing you there. Please email Danielle Purcell at billanddannii@gmail.com to volunteer or if you have any questions.

Now taking enrolments for Kindergarten 2024

Enrolments are now being accepted for all students who reside within our local school area. Please select the link below for further details and to begin your application.
Students not residing in our school area may be considered for an out-of-area enrolment. Please select the link below for further details.
Billabong High School is currently accepting enrolments for Year 7, 2024. As the local high school in the area, it provides high-quality education for students looking to embark on their high school journey. If you're interested in enrolling your child, now is the perfect time to do so. With a strong emphasis on literacy and numeracy and tailored to meet the unique needs of every student, Billabong High School aims to provide a nurturing and stimulating environment that encourages students to achieve their full potential.

Holbrook Public School would like to update the existing games and artwork painted on the playground concrete. To raise funds for this project, the P&C is hosting a fun and relaxing Paint and Sip afternoon at the Holbrook Hotel.

Tickets are $80 per person, including a glass of bubbles, some share platters and all materials required to paint your artwork.

Please go to the link to register your spot. There are only 40 seats available.

Return and Earn

Please collect your 10-cent recyclable bottles, cans and fruit boxes and bring them to school for collection in our newly delivered big green drums.

Please ensure that these items are clean and free of food, liquid or other contaminates. This is a simple, easy way to help raise more funds for our students.

Lost property

Can we urge EVERYONE, parents, carers and students, to regularly check our lost property boxes? We always advise you before the end of the term that we will be having a ‘clear-out’, but it’s sad to see hundreds of dollars worth of items left behind that don’t get claimed. It’s always a great surprise that hardly any items have a name on them or in them; such a simple solution for things finding their rightful owner. If you are serious about keeping track of your child’s belongings, please put a name on them or in them. All unnamed and unclaimed items will go to the Op Shop or the second-hand uniform shop.

Uniforms

Term 4 sees our students return in summer uniform. Please get your child to try on their uniforms so that you are well prepared for when the warmer weather creeps in.
