TERM 2 - Week 5 - 2026

Principal Note

Nhamirri Walal,

**Hot off the press** (and we couldn't be more excited), Mr Mac's soccer team, featuring many of our wonderful 2025 Year 6 students along with Oliver Wearne and Vasco Tan-Grilo this year, has just won Pool B at the NT Soccer Championship! What a fantastic achievement, and an amazing turnaround after being winless in 2025! There was plenty of excitement around our school and another wonderful send-off for Mr Mac, who will sadly be finishing with us at the end of this semester.

A huge thank you to our incredible families and School Council for hosting the annual Mothers’ Day Breakfast and Stall last week. Students arrived ready and eager, coins and notes in hand, to choose their special plant, coffee mug, and perhaps some chocolates (if they had the self-control not to eat them straight away!). It was special to watch so many mums, aunties, nannas, and key mother figures share breakfast together in the quadrangle. I felt proud to be part of this important tradition of honouring the women who mean so much to our children and our community. My sincere thanks to everyone who donated, helped, and attended and to Bec Robinson, who took charge of most of the work and did such a fantastic job of it! I also want to take a moment to acknowledge the incredible role models who work within our school many of whom are mums themselves — and who pour so much of their time and heart into our young people each day. They are wonderful humans, and we are very lucky to have them!

This fortnight has also seen: The dentist and her helpers visiting to apply fluoride treatments and speak with students about their important work in the community.

Hector the Cat making several very popular cameo appearances at whole school assembly, at the preschool, and at our Walk to School Day celebrations. A big thank you to Mike and the team at Nhulunbuy Corporation for making Walk to School Day such a fun way to start the morning. It was once again very well attended by students, staff and families!

On Monday, Musica Viva performed for our students, putting on a show that was truly out of this galaxy. Literally. There were sound effects, music, jokes, and more than a little bit of random cosmic wonder.

It has been a huge couple of weeks filled with fun, the arts, sport, and meaningful connection with our wider community and I thank everyone for going over and above to pull it together at such a busy time of year.

A reminder that the World Teachers' Day NT Excellence Awards are now open for nominations! We have so many incredible staff at NPS, and I know how much it means to them when someone takes the time to highlight their great work. There are nine categories: - Northern Territory Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Educator of the Year - Corporate Based Support Person of the Year - Early Childhood Educator of the Year - Inclusion Educator of the Year - Leader in Education of the Year - Primary Educator of the Year - Principal of the Year - School Based Support Person of the Year - Secondary Educator of the Year Nominations can be submitted via the World Teachers' Day NT Excellence Awards website(https://wtdawards.nt.gov.au/). Warm wishes,

School Captain Report

Welcome to Week 5!

Last week, 1/2B hosted assembly with a focus on our pride value, Respect. They did a fantastic job. Congratulations to all of our award winners for their efforts and achievements.

Our Mother’s Day Stall was a great success and very busy throughout the week. A big thank you to our fabulous School Council for organising and running the stall.

The Mother’s Day Breakfast was also a huge success and our busiest breakfast yet, with all food sold out by 8am! Thank you to all of our sponsors for their generous donations and to everyone who helped make the morning such a wonderful community event.

Last week, each class participated in an art workshop with Kris Keogh and Rosie Grimes. Students enjoyed a range of creative activities, including banner making, poster design, and lantern making. We can’t wait to see everyone’s creations displayed in the Kids Zone at East Arnhem Live.

SRC News

The Mother’s Day breakfast was a big success! A huge thank you to all of our sponsors for their generous donations, and to all the helpers who supported the event on the morning.

Each fortnight, the SRC meets to represent student voice—sharing ideas, suggestions, questions and celebrating the highlights of life at NPS. Students identified many positives across the school, including the Mother’s Day breakfast, the Mother’s Day stall, art workshops, bucket drumming, colouring club and running club.

SRC discussed areas for improvement, such as wearing helmets, following handball rules and wearing bucket hats when playing outside.

A key suggestion from the Student Parking Lot was to introduce an anime club, add new sand to the Transition area, and provide more lunchtime activities. In response to this feedback, the library monitors have created a lunchtime activity schedule for students to enjoy in the library. This will begin next week.

Monday – Arts and craft

Tuesday – Board games and puzzles

Wednesday – Transition students only

Thursday – Anime drawing

Friday – Origami

The Student Voice has spoken! A special shout-out to Mr Luke!

Art Workshop

Last week, we were excited to welcome artists Kris Keogh and Rosie Grimes to our school to lead art workshops across all year levels.

These workshops were part of preparations for the upcoming East Arnhem Live musical event, which will be held on August 29 at Hindle Oval.

This year, the event will feature a Kids Zone where the artworks created by students will be displayed, alongside a fun space for children and families to enjoy activities during the event.

Students across the school participated in a range of creative activities:

  • Transition to Year 2 students explored drawing and design
  • Year 3–4 students painted banners, with some even featuring the Year 1–2 buffalo designs
  • Year 5–6 students created lanterns with their own unique features and artistic styles

It was a fantastic week filled with creativity and enthusiasm. The workshops provided such a positive experience for our students, and we are proud to have been involved in this exciting community project. We look forward to seeing the Kids Zone come to life at East Arnhem Live.

A huge thank you to Kris and Rosie for all their hard work, creativity and support in including our students in this special opportunity.

Walk Safely To School Day

This morning our students participated in Walk Safely to School Day, promoting the importance of being active while also learning and practising safe road habits. It was wonderful to see so many students and families getting involved and supporting this important initiative.

A big thank you to Nhulunbuy Corporation for their support in helping make the morning a success.

Students also had a special visit yesterday at 2:00pm from Hector the Cat, who spoke with students about road safety and shared important messages about staying safe around roads, crossings and traffic. The visit was a fantastic way to reinforce key safety messages in a fun and engaging way.

Thank you to everyone who participated and helped encourage safe, healthy travel to and from school!
