School Bands Australia 2025

Our students in Years 2-5 enjoyed a wonderful Band Demo Day where they were able to listen to a variety of instruments. If you would like your child to join the school band next year please see the information below.

Did you know that being part of a school band can greatly enhance your child’s learning

experience? Being in band offers a unique opportunity for students to:

- Strengthen math and reading comprehension

- Build self-confidence and discipline

- Create lasting friendships and a sense of belonging

No prior experience is needed—just a passion to learn and have fun! Encourage your child

to join the band and be part of this musical journey.

Selective high school and opportunity class applications are open from 7 November 2024 to 21 February 2025

Selective high school Year 7 entry in 2026: Apply when your child is at the end of Year 5 or the beginning of Year 6.

Opportunity class Year 5 entry in 2026: Apply when your child is at the end of Year 3 or the beginning of Year 4.

Selective high schools and opportunity classes are 2 of the ways the NSW Department of Education supports high potential and gifted students.

What are their benefits?

  • Students learn alongside, and form friendships with, other high potential and gifted classmates.
  • Special teaching methods allow students to learn at a quicker pace and in more detail.
  • Research shows that students benefit both academically and socially when learning with classmates who have similar abilities.

Selective high schools and opportunity classes are not zoned so you can apply to ones outside your local enrolment area.

Is a selective high school or opportunity class the right fit for my child?

A selective high school or opportunity class might be a great fit if your child:

  • learns quickly
  • asks complex questions
  • is highly motivated
  • has a good memory
  • is intensely focused in their area of interest
Where are selective high schools (Year 7-12) located?

There are 4 types of selective high schools:

  • fully selective high schools, where all students attending the school have high potential or are gifted
  • partially selective high schools, where there is a mix of students who have high potential or are gifted and local area students
  • 4 agricultural selective high schools, including 3 boarding schools
  • Aurora College, which provides online selective classes for rural and remote students in their local host schools.

Search for a selective high school near you at Find a selective high school.

Where are opportunity classes (Year 5-6) located?

There are 2 types of opportunity classes:

  • full-time opportunity classes in selected primary schools
  • Aurora College, which provides online opportunity classes for rural and remote students in their local authorised host schools.

Search for an opportunity class near you at Find an opportunity class.

Students successfully placed attend the opportunity class full-time in Years 5 and 6. In most cases, students who have accepted a place in an opportunity class will leave their current school to attend the school with the opportunity class.

Discuss the opportunity with your child and look through the information together on the Selective high schools and opportunity classes website and in the student resource hub:

Fair and equitable access

The Equity Placement Model helps make access fairer for more high potential students in our community.

We know that some students may be missing out because they experience educational disadvantage.

Under the model, up to 20% of places in each selective high school and opportunity class are held for:

  • students from low socio-educational advantage backgrounds
  • Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander students
  • students from rural and remote locations
  • students with disability.

These students still receive offers based on their performance in the placement test.

Learn more at Fair access.

The application process

Complete the online application.

Applications close on 21 February 2025.

Once your application has been submitted and processed, your child will need to sit a computer-based placement test. Learn more at Application process.

Ready to apply?

Apply online at shsoc.education.nsw.gov.au

Year 6 Farewell Dinner – A Night to Remember

On Friday night, we held a beautiful Year 6 Farewell event, where Year 6 students, along with a few Year 5 students, came together for a night of fun, reflection, and celebration. It was a special occasion, filled with food, dancing, and plenty of socialising.

The students enjoyed the chance to relax and have fun with their classmates as they celebrated the end of their time at Rydalmere Public School. The night concluded with a heartwarming video, showcasing their time at Rydalmere Public School from 2018 to now. It was an emotional and touching tribute to their growth, achievements, and the many memories they've created along the way. Watching the video with the parents was a beautiful way to reflect on their journey and celebrate their accomplishments.

A big thank you to everyone who helped make the evening so memorable. It was a night filled with joy, laughter, and memories that will stay with the Year 6 students for years to come. We wish them all the best as they move on to high school, and we look forward to seeing the amazing things they will achieve in the future.

From the Office

RPS Preschool Enrolments for 2025 are now open.

General Guidelines

Public preschools enrol children for one year only, the year before they start school.  Children can enrol from the beginning of the school year if they turn four years of age before 31 July that year.

Priority is given to:

  • Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander children
  • children living in low socio-economic circumstances
  • children who are unable to access other early childhood settings due to financial hardship

The Principal will then offer enrolment in the following order:

  • children living within the school's catchment area
  • children living outside the catchment area but have siblings at the school
  • other applicants

For further information, please go to the NSW Department of Education link below:

Enrolment in a public preschool (nsw.gov.au)

Our office staff are happy to be of assistance with any further questions or with the enrolment process.

Change of Details

Please contact the office by email rydalmere-p.school@det.nsw.edu.au if there has been a change to any of the following to your child/children's details:

- change of address.

- change of email.

- phone numbers - mobile or home/work.

- change of emergency contacts.

- Additional/change of medical circumstances

Lost Property

Our PBL expectations of being Safe, Respectful Learners support our students in taking responsibility for their own belongings at school including jumpers, hats, lunchboxes and drink bottles.

To support your child and the school in maintaining lost property to a minimum level we ask that parents or carers clearly label all items brought to school with your child's FULL NAME.

The most common items to lost property include jumpers and hats, lunchboxes and drink bottles, and personal treasures. Students have access to lost property during the school day to search for misplaced possessions. When possible, labelled items in the lost property will be returned to students. Due to the limited space for lost property, unlabeled and unclaimed items are regularly disposed of.

Lost property is located at the front of the office.

Community Hub News

Hello Everyone,

What a year it's been at the Hub! As we wrap up our 2024 programs on December 13th, I can't help but feel grateful for all the amazing moments we've shared. (Quick reminder for our registered families: our final one-box drop-off is set for December 18th!)

I have to take a moment to spotlight two incredible members of our team - Naomi and Lenka. These wonderful women have been the backbone of our childminding services during adult English classes, and I'm thrilled to share that they've both landed full-time positions starting next year. While our English class crew will miss their warm presence dearly, we're so excited for their next chapter. (And hey, if you're interested in joining our childminding team, we'd love to see your resume! Just send it over to seetha.srinivasan@det.nsw.edu.au before January 14th, 2025.)

The future's looking bright for 2025! OzHarvest is coming back with their fantastic NEST healthy cooking program, and we're cooking up something new too. Tafe’s Barista and café skills course might just kickstart your coffee career.

You should've seen our end-of-year celebration on December 6th - the energy was electric! When we asked for program ideas, you all blew us away. From sewing and gardening clubs to resume writing workshops, mindfulness sessions, and citizen test prep classes, the suggestions kept flowing. We've even discovered some hidden talents among you who are eager to volunteer their skills. Trust me, 2025 is going to be incredible.

Mark your calendars: Hub programs kick off again on February 10th, 2025. Keep an eye on our Facebook page for all the latest updates - you won't want to miss what's coming!

None of this would be possible without our amazing partners and volunteers. You're the real MVPs of the Hub, and we couldn't do any of this without you.

For those I haven't had the chance to meet yet (and I hope that changes soon!), I'm Seetha Srinivasan, your Community Liaison Officer here at the school's Community Hub. You'll find me here Monday through Wednesday and Friday, ready to welcome you into our vibrant little community. The Hub isn't just a space - it's where families connect, friendships bloom, and everyone's welcome to join in the fun.

As we head into the holiday season, I hope you all get some well-deserved rest and relaxation. Merry Christmas to those celebrating, and here's to an amazing New Year for everyone!
