Burton Primary School Newsletter

Term 2, Week 1, 2023

From the Principal

Dear Parents and Carers,

Swimming and Aquatics

Being able to swim in Australia is a critical skill, so swimming and aquatics lessons are a valued part of our PE program.

It was pleasing that 96% (349) of our Reception to Year 5 students were able to go swimming last week. 91% of our Year 6 students attended aquatics on Wednesday.

Students requiring extra support due to disability receive support within the group situation. Moving 349 students from 18 classes to and from swimming has been a major exercise and has involved 50 staff. Without the good work of our staff, swimming could not happen.

Student Leaders

Congratulations to 4 of our senior students who have been chosen to be our Student Leaders for 2023. They are:

1. Tiffany Mackenzie, Room 2

2. Mason Boaden- Smith, Room 2

3. Sanjana Vinod Kannan, Room 5

4. Imogen Banks, Room 4

These students were required to prepare a speech, present that speech to the other senior students, and then be interviewed by the principal. They will be visible in many different ways around the school, including presenting certificates at assemblies, doing school tours for prospective new parents, and meeting regularly with the principal to discuss school matters.

Our 2023 Student leaders will receive their leader badges at the week 3 assembly.

Pupil Free Day

The next pupil-free day will be held in week 6 of this term, on Friday June 9. Schools are able to have 4 pupil free days and one school closure day per year. These days must be approved by the Governing Council, and also approved by the local Education Director.

On Friday June 9, the staff will focus on literacy professional development in the morning, and will explore the new Australian curriculum in the afternoon. We understand pupil free days sometimes cause parents to change normal family arrangements, so we appreciate parent cooperation each time there is a pupil free day.

Our OSHC service will be available for parents on this day. Please book direct with the OSHC service.

National Walk Safely to School Day

Dear parents/caregivers

Friday May 19th is National Walk Safely to School Day - a day that encourages primary school children, their parents and carers to walk safely and regularly to school where possible.

It's an opportunity to teach children valuable road safety skills. If you are driving, remember to take care in school areas to support those walking to and from school.

And always be on the lookout for our friendly Road Crossing Monitors.

We at Burton are encouraging families to share this day with your children, family and friends and walk to school keeping yourself safe and Healthy.

Children will be issued with 'Walk Safely To School Day' tattoos which the students can apply on the day to promote this initiative.

Hope to see many families walking to school on May the 19th.

Regards

Burton Primary Staff.
