Principal's Message

Dear Community

Welcome back everyone! We had a fantastic start to Term 3 with NAIDOC activities each afternoon across week 1 and an Aboriginal Cultural incursion on Wednesday of this week. Students enjoyed learning about some Noongar language and culture and participating in a range of Noongar themed games and activities. We were lucky to have Ken and John from the Yonga Group visit us and run cultural experiences for all students across the school. I was enormously proud of the amount of knowledge that our students have absorbed about Aboriginal culture and language over the last few years, and it was so lovely to see how excited they were to share their knowledge and songs they have learnt with Ken and John. Check out our Instagram page for a few photos of the day.

Next week we also enter the Noongar season of Djilba. Please see the picture below for some information on what to expect during the months of August and September.

Cross Country

Today our largest team yet, 35 students from Years 3-6 participated in the Interschool Cross Country that was held at Deanmore Primary School. Thank you to Mr Bacci for organising this event on behalf of the Ocean Net Schools, and congratulations for the determination and enthusiasm shown by all our students. They looked great too in our new interschool sports shirts which were designed and purchased by our wonderful P&C.

A special mention goes to....

Darcy and Loh-Relm who both placed 3rd in their races.

Our Taiko Drumming group also attended to provide some entertainment and inspiration for the runners and spectators. They were very well received and got lots of well-deserved compliments!

Education Minister’s Running Challenge 2023

If you are interested in signing your child up for the Education Minister’s Running Challenge, please do so through the link below. It only requires 1 x 15-minute walk/run per week, so is a fantastic way to add to an active lifestyle.

Reminders

  • Could we please remind students and parents that they should dismount their bikes and scooters once they enter the school grounds and walk them to the bike/scooter racks. It is a safety issue for students when bikes/scooters are ridden inside the school grounds.
  • Families who have applied for Kindy or Pre-primary places for 2023 should be receiving their acceptance letters soon, as they were mailed out today.

As always, if you have any queries, please do not hesitate to call, or email me on Sarah.Dawson@education.wa.edu.au

Cyber Safety

Just a reminder that Nikki, our Chaplain has organised another Cyber Safety information session for parents. There are still some spots left, so get in quick if you are interested! Even better news is that our amazing P&C has agreed to fund the session, which would otherwise have cost around $25 per person. The session will be held on Monday the 31 July in the arts room from 6:30 pm. More details can be found in the flyer below.

Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability (NCCD)

Every year, all schools in Australia participate in the Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability (NCCD). The NCCD process requires schools to identify information already available in the school about supports provided to students with disability. These relate to legislative requirements under the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 and the Disability Standards for Education 2005, in line with the NCCD guidelines (2019).

Information provided about students to the Australian Government for the NCCD includes:

  • Year of schooling
  • Category of disability: physical, cognitive, sensory or social/emotional
  • Level of adjustment provided: support provided within quality differentiated teaching practice, supplementary, substantial or extensive.

This information assists schools to:

  • Formally recognise the supports and adjustments provided to students with disability in schools
  • Consider how they can strengthen the support of students with disability in schools
  • Develop shared practices so that they can review their learning programs in order to improve educational outcomes for students with disability.

The NCCD provides state and federal governments with the information they need to plan more broadly for the support of students with disability. The NCCD will have no direct impact on your child and your child will not be involved in any testing process. The school will provide data to the Australian Government in such a way that no individual student will be able to be identified – the privacy and confidentiality of all students is ensured. All information is protected by privacy laws that regulate the collection, storage and disclosure of personal information. To find out more about these matters, please refer to the Australian Government’s Privacy Policy (https://www.education.gov.au/privacy-policy).

Further information about the NCCD can be found on the NCCD Portal (https://www.nccd.edu.au).

If you have any further questions about the NCCD, please contact the school.

P&C News

Hello SPS families!

Welcome back to school for Term 3. We held our first meeting for the term on Tuesday night and had lots to discuss for the term ahead, as well as planning for 2024. As the new building comes together, the school will be developing a ‘wish list’ for the P&C. We are looking forward to seeing the amazing things we can provide for our school community.

Father's Day

In the coming weeks, an order form will come home to order a ‘pizza herb pot’ for Fathers’ Day. Bunnings have kindly helped to fund this gift for the special guys in our kid’s lives!

Quiz Night

Our next social event is a quiz night which will be held on Wednesday 9 August at Grill’d Scarborough. Bookings are now open via the link below until the 4th of August. Get your table together and start cramming! Tickets are $35 each and include a burger and chips and the quiz.

NEXT MEETING

Our next General Meeting will be held Tuesday 29 August 2023 at 6:30 pm in the school library. It is a great opportunity to find out what is happening, make suggestions, and get an update on the progress of the new build. All welcome, we would love to see you there!

UNIFORM SHOP

The Uniform Shop is open on Wednesday mornings 8:45 am to 9:15aam in Room 8. We are well stocked, with an excess of hats if you need a spare! We are planning to hold another second hand sale towards the end of the term. If you have any unwanted items, please donate them to the uniform shop on Wednesday mornings, or to the office during school hours.

Order forms can be downloaded from the school website https://scarboroughps.wa.edu.au/p-c/uniforms/

Emailed orders will be delivered to your child’s classroom or left at the office for collection. Please indicate on the form.

CANTEEN

We have been able to set up a canteen volunteer group so Laura, our wonderful Canteen Leader, has a few parents that are trained up and can help once or twice a term. There is always space for more volunteers, so if you would like to help out, please get in contact with Laura or Teneke (Canteen Coordinator).

The time needed to volunteer is Friday mornings between 11:00 am -12:30 pm.

Please also note that all canteen orders need to be placed via QuickCliq prior to 8:30 am on Friday.

ENTERTAINMENT BOOK

We continue to fundraise through the Entertainment Book. When you purchase the Entertainment Book, a portion will go to the P&C.

Order your membership here https://www.entertainment.com.au/orderbooks/86y129

CONTAINERS FOR CHANGE

We will continue to fundraise through the Containers for Change initiative. The Containers for Change bins can be found at the school entry at Hinderwell Street near the Room 9 Heritage Building. Keep on bringing those empty cans and bottles to support the P&C! Please note that we have previously given the wrong scheme ID, so double check next time you’re donating that it is the one above.

THESE BINS ARE NOT FOR RUBBISH BUT FOR ELIGIBLE EMPTY DRINK CONTAINERS ONLY, THANK YOU!

Alternatively, if you wish to donate at a refund point of your choosing you can quote our Scheme ID C10284773. If you prefer to attend a Reverse Vending Machine location, please use the barcode at the top of the P&C news. This may be your preference if you have a larger donation and be rest assured that the money goes back to the P&C.
