Week 9 – Term 1, 2024

Message From The Principal

Dear Parents and Carers

EASTER BREAK

We will be holding our very popular Easter Hat Parade on Thursday 28 March at 9:30am. Students will bring their hats to school and wear for the parade. Parents and friends are very welcome. The Easter Raffle will be drawn at the end of the parade.

Don’t be fooled by the Easter break, we still have just over 2 weeks until the end of term. Last day for students is Friday 12 April.

ATTENDANCE

Every day matters even the days leading up to end of term.

Boost in confidence, friendships and getting the best out of their education is what happens when students attend school every day. Please remember to only plan travel during school holidays so students can get the most out of their learning.

You might be aware from media coverage that persistent absence from school continues to be a national problem, unfortunately our school attendance too is below where we would like it to be. The more school children miss, the less education they receive.

PARENT/TEACHER INTERVIEWS

This year we will be holding the parent/teacher/student interviews this term. Interviews will be held in the afternoons of Tuesday 2 April and Wednesday 3 April. This is an opportunity to find out how your child is progressing academically and socially prior to school reports going home at the end of next term. We encourage students to attend the meeting. This involves the student actively reflecting on their goals and progress and parents and teachers openly discussing feedback, encouragement and structuring targets collaboratively.

Please book an interview time using the link below.

CROSS COUNTRY

Our school Cross Country Carnival will be held on Wednesday 10 April in the school grounds. A timetable of the day will be sent out to inform you of timeslots for each grade. All parents and family are very welcome to come and cheer on the students.

ANZAC Day

ANZAC Day falls in the school holidays on the Thursday 25 April prior to students returning. We would love to see lots of students attending the march to Town Hall on ANZAC Day. The children are asked to wear their school uniform and meet teachers in the carpark at the back of the shops under the sails. The Senior and Junior Choirs (3-6) will be performing at the ceremony. A note will be going home for those students in the choir.

We will be holding a school ANZAC service in the first week back at school on Thursday 2 May at 9:30am in the school Hall.

Cricket Match

Last Friday, 11 students played a cricket match against Tinonee PS for the NSW PSSA school cricket knockout tournament.

We batted first and made 6/62. Unfortunately, Tinonee proved too strong and ended up reaching the target with 2 wickets lost. Students had a great time and it was a pleasure seeing them put their newly learnt cricketing skills into action.

5/6M and 5/6R Happenings

5/6M and 5/6R are starting to rise to the challenge of the expectations and responsibilities that come with being in Stage 3 and being the leaders of the school. We have found the new English and Maths units of work to be challenging and engaging.

In English, we have been exploring the text ‘The Wild Robot’ by Peter Brown. We’ve been learning about different types of narrative voices, verbs, verb groups and adverbial clauses. We’ve been trying to apply this learning and using them in our own science fiction writing. We have learnt about the importance of reading fluently and how it helps with how we understand what we are reading.

In Maths, we have really enjoyed the hands-on aspect of the new Maths units. So far, we have learnt to name, rename, represent and order numbers up to millions, use different flexible strategies to solve addition problems and measure and compare lengths of objects using millimetres, centimetres, metres and kilometres.

We are discovering how Australia came to be a nation in history and the characteristics and properties of materials in science. We continue to take part in weekly music lessons with Ed – some of us are lucky enough to also be part of the guitar group.

Last week we were given the valuable opportunity to learn CPR from Cameron from the NSW CPR Program run by the Royal Lifesaving Society of NSW. We learnt what steps to take in an emergency, including:

– How to contact emergency services

– What the DRSABC action plan is and what to do for each step of the action plan and

- Learning CPR chest compressions on a CPR mannequin.
