Term 4 - Week 4 - 7th November

Principal

Frank Congedi

Dear Parents and Community Members,

STEM Showcase

What a wonderful start to Term 4 we have had with our annual STEM Showcase. This year, our focus was Indigenous Perspectives, and it was truly enjoyable experience to walk through all the classroom to see their STEM learning. The children seemed very eager and proud to show their learning to family members and it was great that children and their families could see STEM learning at other year levels in their respective classrooms.

A sincere thank you to the many family members who were able to be present and be an audience for the children’s learning and valuing what they do at school. A huge thank you to all the teachers who worked so hard to set up all the displays and for Ms Condo’s leadership in Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM).

Year 4 Camp

Last week, I helped supervised the Year 4 students at their camp. This year we went to a new venue called Adare in Victor Harbor. What a joy were the Year 4 children! It gave me an insight of how much they are maturing in their capacity to relate to one another and have a go at new activities. They took part in all the activities with enthusiasm, a sense of fun and looked after each other. They were respectful and the person who prepared and served the food said we were the best group of children he had in the last 7 months.

A special mention to Eddie G. for supporting other children at camp. While I was supervising his group Eddie supported other children who had become upset and bringing them back into the activities. Very proud of you Eddie!

Thank you to Tim Krieg, Kelsey George, Rebecca Everett, Matthew Hiern, Aidan Brigden, Nicholas Guidolin, Catia Frasca and Mel Corbett who joined me in looking after and caring for our wonderful Year 4 students.

Volunteer Morning Tea

On Monday, we aligned our All Saints’ Day Community Prayer, to acknowledge our volunteers who in many ways live in a saintly way. Unfortunately, attendance was low so I am keen to look for ways that we can gather more volunteers in future. It was important for our students to take the time to be grateful for our many volunteers who help our school in so many ways.

On behalf of our school community, I would like to thank you all for the way you contribute this our school community enabling children to play sport of the school, read with the children, helps supervise on excursions and support events through Parents and Friends and support the School Board.

Movie Night

On Friday the 14th of November, our Parents and Friends have organised a Movie Night for our school community. This is always a special time for children and their families as we gather in our school yard. I would like to thank our Chairperson of the Parents and Friends Lina Sotiropoulos and the parents on the committee who are organising this event for all of us. I encourage you all to support this event.

Kind Regards

Families are also invited (if you are able) to donate a new toy or new book that can be placed under our Giving Tree from the beginning of Week 7 (Monday 24th November) There is no need to wrap gifts. We have been asked to avoid toys that include guns/weapons, candles, beauty/makeup and jewellery. All of these items will be distributed to needy children in Adelaide.

Once letters have been distributed – the collection period will begin on Monday 24th of November (at the earliest), and will finish on Thursday 4th December (Week 8) Food donations are to be taken to your child’s classroom, and toy donation to the library.

Catholic Schools Athletics Day

Last Friday, 31st October, Whitefriars sent our super talented Athletics team to the annual Catholic Schools Athletics Carnival. Whitefriars are in the very competitive and tough Division 2 against 8 other schools from around Adelaide.  In all, 46 athletes represented the school in a range of track and field events at the SA Athletics Stadium. The students representing our school were Whitefriars best Athletes at those specific events, so to be selected is a great achievement. All the students did their very best and did our school proud and we had students come home with a range of ribbons for their efforts.

Congratulations to Madeline R for winning the Age Champion for the Year 5 Girls, a feat she also achieved last year in Year 4. Our Year 5 Girls team also dominated their age group and won the coveted Year 5 Age Champions pennant.

A massive thank you to Jade Lehman and Bec Wilson who gave up their time and assisted the carnival all day, your help and support is greatly appreciated. Thank you to all the parents and grandparents who came out to support the students, it really does create a community feel within our school.

SASPASA AFL

Our school is part of the Western District zone for the State Championships in School Sport. Each year we have talented students going to the trials for a range of sports vying for selection against students from other schools in our area. To be selected to go to the State Championships students need to be dedicated, skilful and a team player.

During week 3 this term the AFL girls State Championships were held at West Beach. Whitefriars had 3 girls selected who played 9 games over the 3 days. Their team went undefeated in all games which is an incredible achievement.

Congratulations to Opal G, Nahla N and Madeline R - you represented our school and yourself exceptionally well.

A Safer Digital Future: What Parents Need to Know About

Australia’s New Social Media Age Laws

From December 10 this year, Australia will lead the world in a major change to online safety. New legislation will restrict children under the age of 16 from creating or maintaining social media accounts — including popular platforms like Instagram, TikTok, Snapchat, YouTube, Facebook, and X (formerly Twitter).

It’s a huge - and positive - step. And for many families, it will mean big changes to how kids connect, communicate, and spend their time online.

In this week’s Insight’s article, ‘A Safer Digital Future: What Parents Need to Know About Australia’s New Social Media Age Laws’, Justin shares information about how the new laws will look like and how to help your children make a healthy digital transition.  He also shares some simple, practical steps to help start the transition.
