Dear JPS Families,

This week we celebrated Public Education Week, and I have to say, it is a genuine privilege to serve this community in such a wonderful school.  Weeks like this one remind us of all the incredible things that happen every day within our classrooms and our community. At Jamberoo PS, we have so much to celebrate.

A highlight of the week was opening our classrooms to families, and what a joy it was! There is something so special about watching students proudly leading their families through their classrooms, sharing their work and the place where they learn and grow each day. It was also great to see families enjoying each other's company in our beautiful school grounds on such a sunny winter's day. 

Our bake sale was a wonderful success — thank you so much to everyone who donated so generously. It was a delight to see students enjoying treats alongside their families and taking pride in contributing to their school. Along with the priceless good vibes, the bake sale also raised over $600 towards our school garden and SRC initiatives! 

Pyjama day was also a hit this week, with both staff and students enjoying what was definitely the cosiest day of the week. Thank you for supporting our year 6 fundraiser. The gold coins certainly got a work out this week!

Looking ahead to next week, we will be hosting the Multicultural Public Speaking Regional Final here at Jamberoo on Tuesday, and we have our very own Zahli competing. Zahli has worked incredibly hard to reach this level and we could not be more proud of her. We will all be cheering for you, Zahli!

Our Southern Stars students will also be heading of for another rehearsal, polishing their dances as show week gets closer. We can't wait to see the show!

The sun shone (along with some accompanying cool winds) for the district athletics carnival this week. Mrs Kunkler's organisation ensured that things ran smoothly, and we were proud of all of our JPS competitors who represented our School in the Tongarra District PSSA against many strong competitors from our neighbouring schools. 

We had some great results with Sofia sprinting her way to 4th in the 100m, Nate bouncing to 3rd in high jump and Ruben leaping to 2nd in long jump. A huge congratulations to Gus who came 1st in high jump with a height of 1.38m. He is off to represent JPS at the regional carnival. Well done, Gus!

Term 3 is off to a strong start in Bimbala. In English, we are reading A Year on Our Farm by Penny Matthews and exploring how life on a farm in Eden Valley, South Australia changes across the seasons. Students have been comparing the text’s context with their own experiences and have begun writing about the seasonal activities they enjoy, adding prepositional phrases to enhance the detail of their written pieces. We have had rich discussions about what is similar and different between our lives and the characters and setting in the book. Students also drew and wrote about their own special places, with many applying what they’ve learned about how settings are shown in texts and using these features in their own writing. Students are now creating written texts describing a week in their lives. We are working through our planning process, applying feedback, and are very excited to move towards publishing.

Our visual art unit has also begun with plenty of excitement. Students have been mixing primary colours to make secondary colours and studying portraits such as Me by Ken Done and Maggie by Del Kathryn Barton to see how artists use colour to show personality. We also practised creating Mondrian‑inspired line work in preparation for our own portraits. I cannot wait to watch Bimbala bring everything they have learned into their final self‑portraits later in the term.

Birrahlee’s Engaging English Unit

Birrahlee students have thoroughly enjoyed exploring the focus text Wandi by Favel Parrett. This captivating story introduces us to a special dingo named Wandi, who was stolen from his family by an eagle, injured after a fall, and ultimately cared for at a dingo sanctuary in Victoria. Through this text, we have gained a deeper understanding of dingoes—often misunderstood and wrongly labelled as pests—when in fact, they play a vital role in Australia’s ecosystems.

Inspired by what we have learned, the students have created persuasive posters encouraging others to help protect dingoes. Adding to the excitement, Henry recently shared wonderful news: during the school holidays, he visited the dingo sanctuary in Victoria and had the unique opportunity to meet Wandi and Wandi’s dingo friend, Hermione!

What a memorable experience!
