October 26, 2023 - Term 4 Week 3

Acknowledgement of Country

From the Principal

Principal's Pen

Kaya, Parents & Community Members,

As the term unfolds, planning for the new year really commences in earnest.  We are currently well progressed with the development of the new Business Plan (2024-2026), in the early stages of developing Operational Plans for 2024, developing budget around finite resources and reviewing our staffing configurations.

Part of this planning also involves utilising our school resourcing to structure classes for optimising our teaching staff.  The classes for the new school year have been devised and the next step in the process is to allow parents and carers with an opportunity to request a placement. While teachers will endeavour to combine students in classes that will ensure an ability to maximise their potential, requests will also be considered.  This does not guarantee positioning in a particular room, but simply provides staff with some additional information.  Please use the link published in today's Newsletter to make this request if deemed necessary.

Finally, don’t forget to “dip your lid” to a teacher this Friday, i.e., October 27, for World Teachers’’ Day.

 Peter Meston

Principal

Steve Manzoney Award – Nominations

This is an annual award presented at the Year 6 Graduation Ceremony in December.

The award has been in place since 2004 and was established to honour the hard work and commitment to the school and Duncraig community by one of our parents, Mr Steve Manzoney who sadly passed away in September 2004. In 1999 Steve took up a position on the P&C social committee and committed an enormous amount of time and energy organising a variety of functions that raised valuable funds for the school and brought the community together. In 2001 he also was the P&C Treasurer.  He was always willing to lend a hand around the school, helping out on carnival days and other school events. He was someone you could rely on.  Steve was also involved in the Duncraig community, coaching basketball, umpiring T-ball and actively involved in the junior football as a coach and runner.

We are now requesting nominations for this award.  The criteria can be found on the nomination form which can be downloaded within this article.  A copy will also be sent via Connect.

Please return the form to the office marked “Attention to the Principal” or directly via email (peter.meston@education.wa.edu.au) by Friday, November 3rd.

Colour Blast

Friday 3rd November Colour Run: 2.00pm

  • After lunch, students will get changed into old clothes. It is recommended that students wear an old white shirt (white shorts are optional). Students who do not wish to be sprayed with colour can wear a dark shirt to indicate this.
  • I thoroughly recommend packing an older pair of shorts/pants for your child to get changed into as well.
  • All students will be bringing their bags, hats and drink bottles to the oval and students will leave their belongings in a designated area.
  • Kindy/Pre-primary and Year 1 students must be collected by an adult and we will be marking all students off on a roll as they are collected.
  • If you are going home in a car; we recommend bringing a few towels/garbage bags for your child to sit on.
  • Parents and family members are welcome to attend the Colour Run.
  • Your child will bring their hat home at the end of the Colour Run to be washed.
  • Chess Club is cancelled on Friday.

Riding of Bikes on School Grounds

Dear Parents/carers,

A friendly prompt to please remind your child(ren) that when they arrive at school to please stop and get off their bikes/scooters and walk them to a rack. We have had a number of near misses and would hate for an accident to occur.

Thanks for your support in this message!

Wonderful World of Work

Shrek the Musical

Hayley C, Caitlin G and Lyla J had the pleasure of performing in Shrek the Musical! at Perth Town Hall over several shows last weekend.  After 6 months of intense training, they are all a triple threat and did exceptionally well in their roles and are looking forward to next years' show.

DARREN'S MATH OLYMPIAD

On the school holidays, I went to the Philippines for a Math Olympiad. I came second and I liked it. The Olympiad was pretty hard, but I was ready to do it.

Career Dress Up Day

We are excited to announce a special event on Friday, November 17, that brings together both fun and philanthropy. On this day, we invite all students to participate in our Career Dress Up fundraiser, aimed at supporting our chosen charity for this year, The International Rescue Committee (IRC).

The inspiration behind our dedication to the IRC stems from the moving and personal story of our former school chaplain, who himself experienced life as a refugee.

To participate, all students are invited to dress up as what they would like to be when they grow up. In addition, we kindly request that each student bring a gold coin as a donation towards our fundraising efforts.

Hope Group

What’s been happening….

Room 6’s vegetables are growing fabulously! They are now ready to plant out into the kitchen garden.

Room 5 & 6’s native plants, near Alfreton Drive, have had the weeds cleared. They need weeds pulled from around the plants and plants need water.

There’s lots to do to now maintain the kitchen raised garden beds.  Come along and help out.

The next jobs are - turn and sift the soil, then plant and water seedlings.

Lots of the seeds in the nursery, are ready to plant by Room 1.

Thursdays after school 3-4pm is when HOPE meets.  We need your help!

Last week:- we  tasted some bush tucker. (seeds from the Wattle and Qandong fruits)

The group had fun bashing the Qandong nuts open!

Next BUSY BEE Pending interest in a cook on the BBQ!

*** Know someone who has a lot of 10c bottles and cans? ***

Bring in those 10c containers – money straight to our P&C-

Just toss bottles, cans and cartons into a box or crate at home, especially after a party, and bring them to school on a Thursday.  They can be crushed but must be recognisable. A crate will stop leaking in your car – go on give to your P&C!

Lift the bin lid on a marked green bin and tip your box -SUPER EASY.

The cage near the greenhouse at ‘Alfreton Road’ side of school, will be open from 8:30 till 3:45 every Thursday of the school term.

Health and Hygiene

Is your child feeling unwell?

If your child is unwell with cold and flu symptoms, please keep them at home and consider checking in with your GP if symptoms don't resolve

Healthy WA also recommends seeking a COVID test for cold and flu symptoms.  See links below for more info.

DoE LINK

As directed by our guidelines, we will ask for your child to be collected if they are displaying cold symptoms such as a cough, runny nose, fever etc.

We have a student at school who is immunocompromised.  This means they can potentially become gravely ill even when contracting a common cold/virus.  Please be mindful of sending students to school when they are unwell, as they may spread their infection.  Please speak with your GP/health professional and see the information in the links above re: advice about keeping your child at home when unwell.

Wellbeing Officer's Chat

INTEGRITY WHEN NO ONE IS LOOKING

Hello from the Wellbeing space at school.   I was reflecting on our school value of Integrity = the practice of being honest and showing consistent commitment to strong moral and ethical principles and values.  I realized that integrity can be practiced by yourself whilst BY YOURSELF as well as  in relationships.  Sometimes practicing something by yourself helps you to get stronger at it when you are in a group situation.  One example of practicing integrity which I taught my children growing up (they are now aged 29 to 36) was for us as a family to return the shopping trolley to the trolley bay in the car park.  It is one of those sneaky situations where no-one is going to keep you accountable but it can really impact the next person who parks in your car bay if the trolley is lurking! Showing integrity can be a sacrifice of your time and money.  This week I have introduced in bulk, new 'kinetic sand' to the lunchtime games.  Students are loving getting their hands in it and creating sand cities with the shapes. It is very calming for students to have their hands massaged by the textural sand.  One student found a dollar coin in the middle of the kinetic  sand this week.  She told me she had found it and asked me what she should do with it.  What a lovely example of integrity.
