Newsletter – Week 1, Term 2

Welcome back! Term 2 has started well, with students quickly settling back in to routine. The beautiful weather has helped keep everyone smiling and enjoying the breaks outside.

Some of you may have noticed the changes that occurred in the holidays, with new carpet installed in the admin and entry areas of both buildings, giving the space a fresh new look. The other change you may have noticed is the bells. Our bell system had been in decline (for want of a better term) over the past few years, and with many of you noticing that sometimes it didn’t ring. We have had the system replaced in the holidays, with improved speakers that have a better reach across the outdoor space. There is further information about this below.

I will be taking some long service leave over the next 3 weeks, beginning Monday May 1 and returning to school on Monday May 25. During this time, Kym Dinedios will be our Acting Principal. This then means there will be some other changes. Shannon Leonards will be our Deputy Principal and Amy Farquharson will be the Student Wellbeing Leader (Monday to Wednesday). Please do not hesitate to reach out to Kym, Shannon and Amy if you need anything.

We also have some new staff joining our team this term. We welcome Amy Clarke to J3 (replacing Amelia Travis who is on Maternity Leave), Mel Alexander as our Aboriginal Community Education Officer (ACEO), Laura Toland in P14 (Monday-Wednesday while Amy is taking on the Student Wellbeing Leader role) and we welcome back Jack Rawson to the SSO team.

Now... more importantly, will the Crows win the showdown tonight?

Our new Bell system

You may have noticed or had children mention, that recently we have changed our school bell system. This new system, in it’s trial phase, allows us to use music as well as traditional bell sounds. Different types of music can be used at different times of the day—for example, calm tunes to signal the end of breaks and help students settle, and more upbeat music to mark the start of the school day.

Some of the benefits to using music as bells include:

• Positive Atmosphere: Music can boost student mood, motivation, and engagement across the school.

• Calm Transitions: Gentle or classical music can support smoother, quieter transitions between lessons.

• Student Engagement: Music creates interest and excitement, making daily routines more enjoyable.

As part of this initiative, we will be trialling a range of music styles to see what works best for our students and community. In the near future, we are also looking forward to involving student voice in this process. The Student Representative Council (SRC), along with classes and staff, will have opportunities to suggest and provide input into the music selections. We will also work with our Music Education Coach Gaby Freer, on advice into what types of music, what length and in what rotation works best for schools. It will be exciting to see how this evolves.

Welcome Mel
