Goulburn North Public School Newsletter

Term 2 Week 6 - 2023

School News

Thank You!!

It has been a few busy and hectic weeks of term. We have been hit with Covid fairly hard these last few weeks. However, we are beginning to see light at the end of the tunnel. Our staff are beginning to return to school. We expect that the majority of our staff will be back in our school towards the end of this coming week. Let us hope that this trend continues!

We ask that you continue to be vigilant with keeping your children at home if they have Covid-like symptoms. Let's try and halt the spread among our school community.

King's Birthday Weekend

Happy Birthday King Charles III!

Monday 12 June is the King's Birthday weekend. You may all have an extra day of rest to celebrate the birth of the King! This is a special occasion, as it is our first King's Birthday.

Reconciliation Week

This week is Reconciliation Week. the theme is to be a voice for the generations! What better way to strive towards reconciliation that for our students to be that voice of change. We have some amazing students that are supremely tolerate and receptive of change. They are the ones that can continue to be the voice for continued change. We are so proud of our students and the way they learn and support one another. Towards the end of this term, we will move into  NAIDOC Week which will continue our movement towards reconciliation, tolerance and acceptance.

School Disco

Our school disco is not to far away! It will be held on Wednesday 28 June. Mr Baxter and Miss Franchi are our DJs for the night and are keen to get our new school Disco Equipment booming with lights and sound. Details of meal deals and the theme will be shared in the coming weeks.

Library News

Classes library lessons have been adjusted to fortnightly.

Students are still able to borrow and return daily, at First Break.

Class lessons are scheduled as follows:
Even Weeks: Monday - 2/3C, 3/4B, 3/4L Friday - 2C

Odd Weeks: Monday - 4/5M, 5/6L Friday - 1L, 5/6F
Kindergarten visit weekly on a Thursday with Ms Caffery.

Our schedule has been very disrupted the last few weeks with our staffing shortages. However, we should begin to see a return to regular lessons in Week 7.

Curriculum and Instruction

Seven Steps

Students at Goulburn North have been working with their teachers to improve their writing using the Seven Steps to Writing Success program. You may have heard your child talk about Sizzling Starts, which is Step 2 of the Seven Steps program. So, what is a Sizzling Start?

Have you ever read a book and been absolutely hooked from the first page? Or noticed how so many movies throw you straight into the middle of an epic battle or action scene from the very first second?

If you answered ‘yes’, then you know what a Sizzling Start is! A start that captures a reader’s or viewer’s attention immediately, compelling them to keep reading or watching.

NORTHERN STAR AWARDS

Week 6 will see the very first Bronze Certificates being handed out at our assembly. Our super stars have been respectful, responsible and cooperative and this has not gone unnoticed. Students are even starting to receive their Silver level 1. A huge congratulations to all students, keep collecting your Northern Stars in your passport!

GNPS WELLBEING FORTNIGHTLY FOCUS

  • We talk it through

Our focus for week 5 and 6 has been 'We talk it through'. It is important to encourage students to talk about the things that they are having difficulty with. This could be a friendship challenge or struggling with work in class, the possibilities for conversation are endless. Please encourage your children to seek help from staff if they need help with talking something through. We are here to help!

  • We look after our belongings

Our focus for week 7 and 8 will be 'We look after our belongings'. At this time of year this is an important expectation to revisit. A handy way to help children look after their belongings is to have items labelled with their name. There is an increasing number of jumpers and jackets in lost property that unfortunately do not have a name on them. At the end of each break children are encouraged to pick up their belongings and take them back to class. If they forget to do this, having a name on the items ensures we can get them returned to the rightful owner.

Lose passwords and start Passphrasing.

Passphrases are harder to guess but easy to remember.

Some examples I have used in the past are the seasons, Summer, Autumn, Winter and Spring. That way the month I'm in gives me more chance of remembering what passphrase to use. Phrases like SummerHeat@23WaterSlide, AutumLeaves23#GroundCover, WinterSnow#22HeavyFall. You can personalize these phrases to be more meaningful to you and therefore easier to remember. Remember to always include a mix of capitals, numbers and symbols and always be safe online.

Goulburn/Crookwell PSSA District Cross Country Carnival

On Friday the 19th of May, 45 Goulburn North students attended the Goulburn/Crookwell PSSA District Cross Country Carnival with Miss Franchi and Miss Martin. It was a beautiful day, the sun was out and we had lots of family support. Our runners all had a fantastic day and represented our school with pride.

Congratulations to Eli and Claudia on placing in the top 5 of their age group and making it through to the South Coast Primary Cross Country Championship in Willandra, Nowra on the 8th of June.

Good luck! We look forward to hearing how you go.

Peter Lucas Cup Gala Day

On Friday the 26th of May, Miss Martin and Ms Orford took 28 Goulburn North Stage 2 and 3 students to participate in the Peter Lucas Cup at Carr Confoy oval. Although the weather to start the day was a little wet, the students had a fantastic day. They had great sportsmanship and enjoyed a great day out mingling with other schools and enjoying the game of touch football.

Thank you to Miss Martin for organising the event and running training through the week.

Wonder Recycling

Recycle, Earn & Play

Our initiative is still running!

We have until the 7th of July to try and fill four bins of used bread bags. We are currently close to filling our first bin. Well done everyone!

Our bin is currently located in the front office.

By collecting as many bread bags as we can, we will exchange them for points to redeem new sport equipment for the school.

1L News

Over the last few weeks 1L have been working hard on their creative writing. We have been learning about nouns, verbs, adjectives and how to create a compound sentences using conjunctions.

Each day during our writing sessions we have been using our new skills to co construct a short paragraph. Students have used different stimuli to create  compound sentences using nouns, verbs and adjectives, they then finish their writing with a colourful picture to represent their work.  We have also been investigating Information texts and their features. Students constructed their own short Information text about Koalas.
