From the Leadership Team

We have had some spurts of the beautiful weather to come with Saturday being as perfect as they come.

Hopefully we get some this weekend as it is an extended one for students with Monday being a School Closure Day and Tuesday a Pupil Free Day. Remember not to send your children to school on these days!

On the Pupil Free Day, the Gawler 1 Portfolio - which includes schools in the Gawler, Barossa and Goyder and Light areas, has coordinated a number of quality professional learning opportunities for all staff within these schools to attend. Staff have selected professional learning that is tailored to meet their individual needs, the needs of their site and ultimately deepen their knowledge and understanding to further meet the needs of our students. It is a fantastic opportunity for teams of our staff to connect with peers from other sites and share their collective knowledge, gaining new learning as they go.

This week, Year 1 students have completed the Phonics Screening Check (PSC). The PSC is a way of confirming that students are developing the phonics knowledge they need to be successful in their reading, writing and spelling programs. An understanding of phonics is foundational to developing these skills. From initial investigation, our students’ results are extremely positive, which is a testament to the high level of organisation, monitoring and staff support of Kerry Giles and the in-class and intervention work of our teachers and SSOs in implementing our evidence-based programs.

We are always on the lookout for family – parents, grandparents, aunties and uncles as well as community members to put their hand up to volunteer. There are a number of ways this can look. You may like to participate on one of our ongoing committees and be involved in the decision-making processes or you might prefer to be contacted to help out at actual events. We are also in great need of some volunteers willing to help at breakfast club during the week.

Volunteering opportunities include:

PARENTS AND FRIENDS

  • Develops fund-raising plans and organises events. Involvement can be in the meeting and planning stage or volunteering on the day of planned events.

GROUNDS COMMITTEE

  • Supports the development of school grounds through advising, planning and monitoring; to support an engaging, purposeful and well-maintained environment for our children to play and learn.

UNIFORM COMMITTEE

  • Liaises with the school community to coordinate the design, purchase and selling of uniform items.

GOVERNING COUNCIL

  • Works with the Principal and school on general oversight and governance for the wellbeing and development of the school community including advising on; local needs, school policies, buildings equipment and grounds and the financial management.

BREAKFAST CLUB

  • Volunteer on a morning for about 1 hour to set-up and support students to access breakfast. Can be as frequent or infrequent as you can manage.

If you are interested in any of the above, or would like to talk to someone for further information, please contact the Front Office.

Have a fantastic weekend!

Prime Minister's Spelling Bee

During week four this Term we had some very capable students participate in the Prime Minister's Spelling Bee. This was an online competition open to all students in years 3-8 in registered Australian Schools. We had 11 of our year 6 students participate in the Spelling Bee. These students were selected by class teachers based on high achieving spelling results in class.  These students were Mackenzy Sims, Ella Ellbourn, Dylan Allert, Nash Craft, Max Davidson, Eve Ross, Erica Crook, Jaxon Ralph, Ruby MacKenzie, Ava Wendt and Fraser Kearns.

Congratulations to Erica Crook, Ava Wendt, Nash Kraft, and Ruby MacKenzie who scores have advanced them to the State/Territory Spelling Bee Finals. Well done to all students who participated.
