Message from the Principal

Dear parents and carers,

We’ve come to the end of Week 3, and I’d like to acknowledge the wonderful spirit of collaboration and enthusiasm we’ve seen across both campuses.

A big thank you to our Year 11 class for organizing the school disco for our primary students. Their energy, leadership, and care created a truly fun event.

Thank you also to our dedicated Parents & Friends (P&F) group for providing food and drink refreshments at their stall, and to the parents who volunteered their time to assist. Your support helps foster the vibrant school community.

For families with secondary students, please remember that Parent-Teacher Conferences are scheduled for next week. If you’d like more information or wish to arrange a meeting, I encourage you to reach out to your child’s teachers directly.

To Year 9 parents: if you’ve chosen to process your child’s NID and passport independently for the upcoming Cairns trip, please communicate the status of those applications with the school promptly. Those who have opted to receive assistance from the school can liaise with Grace in the primary office for updates. Families who delay in submitting required paperwork may risk having their children moved to next year’s travel cohort.

Finally, a reminder to our Board of Governors: the next meeting will be held on Wednesday 7th July at 1:30 PM in the Primary School Meeting Room.

Thank you all for your continued support and engagement.

Mr Greg Neville

Sports Update:

This week has been full of assemblies and sporting events. Now with our Primary PE swimming schedule in place it has been great to see our students developing their skills supported by Coach Caroline who joins us again this term. We were delighted to announce the certification of Ms Daroa Inai our Year 2 class teacher by ‘Swim Australia’. Ms Inai has qualified as a Swim Australia Teacher, an international accreditation to support the teaching of swimming at Lae International School. We thank PNG Swim and Lae Amateur Swim Club for their support of Ms Inai in gaining this accreditation.

Across both primary and secondary we have been doing significant work within PE and in training to support our students to compete against other schools in sporting events. Our secondary students have been involved in the Lae school’s rugby league competition this year, and both primary and secondary have been competing in the Lae schools Netball league. On Thursday Ms Kanini travelled with our Upper primary U14s team to compete in the Inclusive Impact Rugby Program Lae Rugby Festival 2025 organised by SCRUM. As the year goes on we hope to see even more regular participation in sporting competitions.

Assemblies in Primary:

On Monday we held the postponed 3KK assembly celebrating their learning about dances around the world. We were given a showcase of different dances by the class with some further explanation of dances native to different places around the globe. During the assembly we had the pleasure to welcome the Australian Consul-General for Lae, Mr Brenton Kanowski. Mr Kanowski gave the primary students an informative presentation on his work in Lae and PNG as well as the role of a diplomat. He offered insight into the possible career routes available when working with a countries foreign office. We thank him for his attendance.

On Friday (today) our 6IT students presented their learning assembly and it was great to see their commitment and the individual performances on show. Well done 6IT.

Parent-Teacher Conferences:

Next week are the final PTCs for our Grade 8, 10, and 12 day students. Our Boarding students have continual updates shared with the Boarding Parents and should any issues arise they will be in contact with parents of Boarders.

These PTCs for Day students will provide an opportunity for parents to come in and discuss revision needs and how they can support their children at home. We look forward to welcoming you to the school as we continue through an incredibly pivotal time for our students in exam years.

In the secondary it is the responsibility of the students to make appointments with their subject teachers. Appointment sheets were shared this week.

School Arrival and Departure Times:

Parents are reminded that school finishes at 3pm on both campuses. Students should only remain past pick up time 3.00pm – 3.15pm in secondary if they are participating in intervention classes or a sports ECA. Students not participating should leave the secondary campus promptly after 3pm.

ECAs finish have now finished in primary. All primary students should be picked up promptly between 3.00pm – 3.15pm. In the rare event of a late pick up, due to unforeseen issues, parents should be contacting the school office to advise them. Students should not be regularly picked up late as the school is unable to provide supervision for them.

The school bus service is available as an option if parents are unable to pick their children up at the required times.

As a reminder to all parents and guardians, supervision of students on the primary campus begins at 7.30am with students able to enter classes from 7.45am. We advise all parents to ensure they do not drop their children off earlier than 7.30am. If students arrive between 7.30am and 7.45am they will be supervised in the hall and need to remain in there seated quietly until they can enter classroom.

We have had notification that the ‘Early Learning Matters’ week date has been changed. This has now been moved on our calendar to reflect this change and to ensure we coincide our Early Years celebrations in the correct week of the term. The week will now be in school week 6 this term between 18th – 22nd August and our Early Years open morning will be on Friday 22nd August, more information will follow closer to the ‘Early Learning Matters’ week.

All families by now should have received their family access pass. If you have not received your pass as yet, please see your child’s class teacher or come to the school office. Parents are encouraged to show pass when entering the school premises at all time. Guards will have visitors and parents without access pass to sign in before entering the school.

Visit from UNICEF

As part of our ongoing puberty education for Grades 7 and 8, we were delighted to extend the learning journey with a special guest session focused on female hygiene and body changes. The girls had the privilege of engaging in an informative discussion led by the dedicated team from the OKY PNG Initiative, facilitated by UNICEF.

This educational session offered valuable insights and practical knowledge, reinforcing our commitment to supporting students' full growth. We extend our heartfelt thanks to Mrs. Yakopa and her team for generously sharing their time and expertise with our students.

SRC Fundraising – T-shake sales

The SRC team have started their T-Shake sales.  All proceeds from their sales will go towards funding their project and other organised activities. The SRC project for this year will be an Anniversary project coinciding with PNG’s 50th Anniversary. Please support the SRC project by allowing your child to purchase a T-shake for only K2. Selling days will be on Wednesday and Friday.

Hat policy

Students are encouraged to wear their hats at all times when outdoor. Please ensure your child comes with his/her school hat/cap to school every day. students without hat will not participate in outdoor activities including playtime. Class teachers will reach out to parents of students who are not wearing the correct school hat//cap in school.

Countdown to PNG’s 50th Anniversary Celebration

As we approach Papua New Guinea’s 50th anniversary, preparations are now in full swing across our school community. We are pleased to announce that practice sessions have begun for several regional performance groups. The energy and enthusiasm among our students are truly inspiring!

In the coming days, notes will be sent home with details regarding costume items. We kindly encourage families to check with their child for this important information.

If you are able to support your child’s group—whether through materials, time, or cultural insights—please connect directly with your child’s province or regional teacher. Your involvement makes all the difference as we come together to honour PNG's vibrant heritage.

These hours were all officially verified by a certified swim coach and our administration. We're thrilled that Ms. Inai successfully completed all components earning her certification. LIS students excel!

“FYI, our son has enrolled at a State School, Brisbane.

He is in prep but the teachers here think that his level of understanding is of a grade 1 and they want to move him up to grade one. This has to be due to the fantastic teachers and team that you have at LIS.

I thought that it would be nice for me to share this information with you, it shows a great example of how LIS are performing!” – Former Parent

Expectations for Student Conduct & Appearance

Uniform Policy: Students are expected to wear the designated uniform correctly and consistently, reflecting pride and unity in line with the LIS school Policy.

Prohibited Items

·        Mobile Phones: These are not allowed during school hours to minimize distractions.

·        Expensive Items: Students are discouraged from bringing valuable personal items to reduce the risk of loss or theft.

·        Hair Guidelines (Girls): Hair should be tied back if shoulder-length.  Must maintain natural hair colour—no coloured extensions are allowed. The school continues to discourage any form of hair extensions, promoting a neat and distraction-free look.

Routine Procedures

·        Students are reminded to adhere to standard protocols when signing out early from campus.

·        Designated no-go zones remain off-limits for safety and privacy, and

·        walkways and corridors should be used solely for walking—not for lingering, running, or loitering.

·        The school emphasizes that graffiti is strictly prohibited and considered an act of vandalism.

Grade 12 Written Expression Examinations

Source materials and instructions for candidates have been issued to all grade 12 students this week. They have one week to prepare before they sit the final Written Expression Paper next week Monday 4th August, 2025.

In the examination our students will be asked to produce two pieces of writing. They will be given 3 hours to write the two pieces.

The first piece of writing will be an expression of their opinion on the aspect of the topic they have prepared for with a word length of 350-550 words. This year the topic for the first question will be based on “Teaching and Learning in the age of Artificial Intelligence”. A good topic I presume.

The second piece will be an imaginative piece of writing in prose, which will not relate to the topic and does not have a specific length.

We want to wish all our year 12 all the best in this first English paper.

Grade 11 and 12 Differential Aptitude Test

This test was completed this week Wednesday. Results for this test are used along with the year 12 tertiary subject choices after year 12s.

ü  Final Grade 12 Written Expression Examination – Monday August 4th

ü  Final Grade 10 Science Practical Test – Wednesday August 13th

ü  Grade 10 and 12 Final Parent Teacher Conference – August 4th – August 7th

Head of Boarding

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Welcome to the LIS Boarding House section of this week’s newsletter.

Behaviour and Learning Expectations

We started this term by setting very clear behaviour and learning expectations for our boarders. These expectations are centred around:

  • Personal conduct and behaviour

  • Academic expectations

  • Residential life and responsibilities

  • Digital conduct

  • Community engagement and wellbeing

  • Signing out and safeguarding

As we reflect on the past two weeks, we are happy to note that our boarders are working hard to align their behaviour at the boarding house and their attitude towards their learning according to the expectations set.

Weekly Virtue Discussion

This week, we have been discussing humility. It is important that our students remain open and positive towards feedback and support to achieve their goals.

  • Humility – recognising you are not perfect and remaining open to feedback

  • Why it matters – Keeps growth possible and prevents stagnation near the finishing line

I kindly invite parents to join us in talking to your child about these virtues when you get a chance. Next week’s discussion will be on Patience.

Catering Service

Ocean Restaurant, a catering company, is providing meals for our staff and students.

Previously, our Boarding House in-house catering team provided meals. With this service being outsourced, my staff and I are fully focused on managing and supporting our students. We are working with the contractor to ensure that meals meet reasonable nutritional standards and are delivered on time.

Boys' Patron

Our boys’ patron resigned, and we have now recruited Mr. Anthony Pare.

Mr. Pare was a former teacher at the primary campus and was also a former boarding parent. This is his second week with us, and he is already making an impact by setting up extracurricular programmes and also setting standards for studies and general behaviour.

I acknowledge the hard work boarding parents put into supporting our boarders. I also thank parents for entrusting us with your child’s education and care.

Warm regards,

John Kalenda
