From the Principal

Congratulations

Last Monday, at the Public Education Awards, Sally Ryan was deservedly awarded the Public School Parent and Volunteer of the Year Award. Sally has made outstanding contributions to our school community over the past eight years. As P&C Vice President, she has tirelessly dedicated herself to enhancing our school environment. Sally has successfully coordinated the uniform shop and organised numerous fundraisers, significantly benefiting our students and families. Her commitment to creating an inclusive and welcoming atmosphere is truly commendable; she goes above and beyond to support all parents and recognise school staff, ensuring they feel valued and part of a community. Sally’s passion and leadership have made a lasting impact for the students, staff and parents at Winston Hills Public School.

Year 6 Canberra

This week Year 6 students are visiting Canberra and the snowfields on a three-day excursion. As a principal, I was proud to hear the compliments that we received from the staff at a number of venues as the students learnt about democracy and Australian history. A big thank you to Miss Ward, Ms Lorenz, Miss Charalabidis, Mr Mckinnon and Mr Freney for providing the students with this amazing experience.

Open Day and Book Parade

Last Wednesday, we celebrated Public Education Week with our book parade, art exhibition and open classrooms. It was great to see the number of parents and grand parents join us for the day. I would like to thank Mrs Hasthanayake for her organisation of the day. I would also like to thank Mrs Wilkinson and Mrs Love for their creation of our art exhibition.

COVID Cases

Over the past week, we have had a number of COVID cases within the school community. We have also had a number of students that have been sick with the flu. If symptoms occur at anytime, your child should not attend school until they are well and symptom-free.

Hills Performing Arts Festival

A number of our students will be performing at the Hills Performing Arts Festival at the end of this month. With the event being very popular, the tickets did sell out very quickly. I would like to thank the teachers who volunteer their time to prepare our choir and dance groups for this event and provide the students with this great experience.

Kindergarten Enrolments for 2026

If you are aware of any in-area children intending to enrol for next year (who haven’t already done so), please advise them to contact the school as soon as possible to fill in enrolment forms. Most of the enrolment process can be completed by visiting https://winstonhil-p.schools.nsw.gov.au/about-our-school/enrolment.html

Area Representation

Congratulations to Cameron Podmore who represented Sydney West at the State Rugby Championships that were held last week. We are proud of his achievements.

Stage 3 Excursion to Canberra- Parliament and Civics Education Rebate

Students from our school undertook an education tour of the national capital. They were given the opportunity to participate in a variety of educational programs with a focus on Australia’s history, culture, heritage and democracy. The Australian Government recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to visit the national capital as part of their Civics and Citizenship education. To assist families in meeting the cost of the excursion the Australian Government contributed funding of $30 per student under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate program towards the costs. The rebate is paid directly to the school upon completion of the excursion and reduced the final cost for parents.

Year 1 Phonics Screening Check

The Year 1 Phonics Screening Check is a short assessment that tells teachers how students are progressing in phonics. The Check takes 5–7 minutes and will be carried out in the classroom by classroom teachers with each student individually, in the next couple of weeks. Results are available immediately. Teachers analyse the results and, if necessary, plan for any additional support that students might require by targeting teaching aligned with NSW English syllabus outcomes. The Check complements existing strategies to identify students' progress in developing foundational literacy skills.

Information for parents and carers can be found at the link below:

https://education.nsw.gov.au/content/dam/main-education/going-to-a-public-school/media/documents/translated-documents-/phonics-screening-check/english-phonics-screening.pdf

Years 3, 4, 5 & 6 Check-in Assessments

The Check-in Assessment is an annual assessment for students in Years 3 to 9 in NSW Public Schools. Year 6 also undertake an additional writing assessment. There are 2 tests (literacy & numeracy), each approximately 50 questions. These assessments support the identification of students’ performance in literacy and numeracy and informs next steps in teaching and learning. Years 3,4, 5 & 6 will be completing these assessments in Weeks 6-10 of this term.

Road Safety

It has been reported that there has been some unsafe behaviour when students are leaving the school and crossing roads. Please remind students to cross at the pedestrian crossing, if possible and to make sure they look both ways before they cross a road.

100 Days of Kindergarten

On Tuesday 29th July, Kindergarten celebrated 100 days of School! It was a day filled with singing, dancing, craft with buddies and learning about numbers to 100; a celebration of all the amazing things we have learnt and the ways in which we have grown this year. We enjoyed a parade showing off our clever costumes, all representing 100 in different ways. There were so many creative ideas! It was clear that everyone had a great time, with smiles, laughter, and energy filling the entire day.

From the Chaplain

Dear School Community,

With great excitement, we are launching several social and emotional development groups for selected students this term.

We will begin with two Social Skills Groups for students in Kindergarten to Year 2. These sessions are designed to support young children in learning how to make friends, understand feelings and emotions, and develop key interpersonal skills such as cooperation, sharing, and active listening.

In addition, we are introducing two Growth Mindset and Resilience groups for students in Years 3 to 6. These groups will help students recognise their strengths and areas for growth, manage emotions, and challenge unhelpful thought patterns. Through these sessions, they’ll learn to think more positively, build resilience, and understand that mistakes are a natural and valuable part of the learning process.

I encourage us all to keep reflecting on the theme of hope, to look for light in every situation and be a source of light for others. Whether in the classroom or at home, we each have the opportunity to make a difference by supporting our children and one another with positivity, compassion, and purpose.

As always, my door is open. If you or your child would like someone to talk to, are seeking emotional, mental, or spiritual support, or simply need a quiet space to reflect, I am here. I can be reached at Dawn.Tan2@det.nsw.edu.au and am available for chats on Monday and Tuesday mornings.

Let us continue walking together in kindness, love, and hope as we support one another throughout the term.

Warm regards,

Dawn Tan

School Chaplain

Debating 2025

The Winston Hills Public School debating team had their final round of the debating competition, competing against Matthew Pearce Public School and came away with a fantastic win.  Our arguments and rebuttals were incredibly impressive.  The topic was "That all schools should give every year 6 student a leadership role instead of appointing a few students for the whole year" and we were the negative team.

We look forward to hopefully moving forward into the semi finals starting next week!

Tremendous job team!

Ms Lorenz

Band News

We had our annual band camp on the weekend of Friday 25th to Sunday 27th July, and it was a wonderful event which supported students to grow in their musical skills, and which created great memories for all. Thank you to Matt Berkovits who led the organisation of this event this year, and to the parent helpers, teachers, conductors and tutors who supported this event

Please follow our band Facebook page (WHPS Band) to see more of the action and hear some of our band performances. We particularly encourage parents of Kindergarten to Year 2 children to visit our Facebook page to find out more about our bands, as we would love to have your children join the band program in the coming years. Our band program is open to all children in Years 3 to 6.

Performance Band is looking forward to their next performance later this month at the Hills Performing Arts Festival.

Finally - thank you to everyone who supported our fundraising BBQ at the school disco!

Questions about the band program can be directed to the band committee by

emailing bandwhps@gmail.com.
