TOKSAVE - Week 5 Term 2, 2025

Lihir International School and School to Mine Campus

Principal: Mr Kevin Collins

Deputy Principal LIS: Ms Catherine Langusch

Deputy Principal STM: Mr David Wengip

From the Principal

Dear Parents and Caregivers,

This term is particularly busy; please be sure to read the many things going on over the next few weeks.

Chickenpox (Varicella)

There have been some cases of chickenpox reported in the school. Please watch your child for symptoms. If your child has chickenpox, they may:

•           have a mild fever

•           feel tired and irritable

•           be itchy

•           have a rash /blister like spots.

The rash usually appears 10 to 21 days after first being exposed to someone who has chickenpox. The time between exposure and getting the rash is called the incubation period. The rash usually first appears on the chest, back or face.  It can then move to other areas of the body, including inside the mouth. At first, the rash looks like small pimples. These later become blisters full of fluid. Most children with chickenpox are unwell for about five to seven days. If your child has chickenpox, they are infectious to others from one to two days before the rash first appears up until the last blisters have dried up.

Children with chickenpox should not go to kindergarten or school until the last blister has dried. A dry blister scab is not infectious. You should tell the school if your child gets chickenpox, as there may be other children who need to be immunised or treated.

Wellbeing

As part of our student Wellbeing program, we are hosting a Wellbeing afternoon next Friday afternoon after lunch. Please note, all students are to wear their non-academic uniform next Friday, to comfortably participate in these activities. Thank you to Ms Langusch, the Wellbeing Team and all teachers for organising this important afternoon. Thanks also to the P&W who have made donations of fresh fruit as a healthy snack for all students from Prep to Grade 10 as part of this afternoon. I am sure it will be an enjoyable and worthwhile event for students.

We would also like to thank Mrs Amanda Amidy for giving her time to work with our High School students and also our teachers throughout the term.

Athletics Week 6

Next week, we welcome former PNG Olympian Rellie Kaputin to assist with a week of athletics workshops with all classes from Prep to Grade 10. We look forward to Rellie coming and sharing her expertise with our students as they prepare for the Athletics Carnival in Week 9.

The Athletics Carnival for Prep to year 10 students will be on Wednesday, 18 June. Field events will be held on the Wednesday morning (for years 1 - 10). Twilight track events will be held at 4pm on Wednesday 18 June, followed by a sausage sizzle. All parents, friends and wantoks are encouraged to attend and support their child/children's house.

Afterschool Activities and Weekend Sport

Pending fine weather, our Monday afternoon activities will continue next Monday with Teeball for Prep to Grade 6, Netball for our Gr 5 to 10 girls and Science Experiments for our High School students. Saturday games of Teeball will be on next weekend.

Student-led Conferences

The Primary School classes will host parents and carers for our student-led conferences next Wednesday 28 May from 3:15pm. Please see notice below.

National Exams

The year is moving ahead quickly and it will not be too long before year 8 and year 10 National Exams are upon us. LIS teachers have a comprehensive program to well prepare students in place, including afterschool and weekend remedial studies. Attendance is very important leading up to the exams. If you would like to understand the preparation or would like more info on how the exams are facilitated at LIS, please see our exam coordinator, Ms Patricia Yip.

Grade 7/8 Cairns Trip

We are busy finalising arrangements for the Grade 7 / 8 Carins Trip which will take place from 5 – 12 June. We have been very busy organising passports and visas; this weekend we will take our remaining students to Port Moresby for Biometrics.

LIS PNG Independence Celebrations 2025

Independence Day preparations are continuing; thank you to those teachers and parents working on this. We will continue to keep you updated with plans and preparation for the big 50 Year Independence Celebrations.

Early Years Reading Workshop / Parent Reading Helpers

Thank you to all who attended our Early Years Reading Workshop and thank you to Ms Dovaston and Ms Saua for facilitating this session. If you have any further questions about reading, please do not hesitate to make contact with your child's teacher. Year 7/8 Car Wash Trip Fundraiser

The year 7/8 students are getting very excited about their trip to Cairns later this term. To help raise funds for their trip, they are having a car wash tomorrow, Saturday, 24th May from 9.00-11.30am. This will take place at the front entrance of the school. Drivers will be asked to drive through the double gate near the playground when it is their turn. Other cars can wait in the car park if needed.

There is no set fee for the car wash - people can donate what they wish in exchange for having their car washed. There will also be coffee/drinks available for purchase from the Canteen during this time.

We hope to see you there on Saturday and we thank you for helping us fundraise for our trip.

From Mrs Laien and the year 7/8 students.

Primary Student-led Conferences

Our primary classes from Prep to year 6 will hold their student-led conferences next Wednesday afternoon, the 28th May, from 3.15-6.00pm in the primary classrooms.

During this time, students can share some of their learning with their parents or carers. This is not a parent-teacher interview, so bookings are not required. Teachers will help students prepare for their conference.

If you have more than one student at the school, siblings will be supervised in the library while you are having your conference with your child. A conference usually takes 10-15 minutes, but this is dependent on your time.

We look forward to seeing many of our parents and carers next Wednesday afternoon. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact your child's teacher.

Wellbeing day next Friday

As well as our GEM-EL lessons that we are implementing each week that focus on GRATITUDE, EMPATHY, MINDFULNESS and EMOTIONAL LITERACY, each semester we hold a special wellbeing afternoon.

For semester one, it will be next Friday, the 30th May. During the afternoon session of that day, students will participate in different rotating activities including yoga, dance and mindful colouring in the high school, and yoga, dance, leaf rubbing and mindful colouring in the primary classes.

As part of the wellbeing activities students will share in some healthy fruit for recess and we thank the P & W for supporting this activity.

As they will be doing Athletics and yoga on the day, all students are to wear their casual sports uniform next Friday.
