Term 1 - Week 6 (8th March, 2024)

Dear St Mary's School Community,

Focus Value: : Leadership

We set a positive example in the classroom, playground and community.

Interschool Swimming Carnival

St Mary’s were victorious at Wednesday’s swimming carnival. Mrs Crees did a magnificent job of coordinating the day and all students did their personal best in representing St Mary’s School.

Sacramental session

Thank you to Father Andrew for continuing to support our students, Parents and Teachers and thank you to the Parents and students who attended Thursday’s Sacrament guidance session.

Family Friday

Our classrooms were open today for our Family Friday event. We will continue to have one a term. All family members are welcome to visit and see what we get up to in our classrooms here at St Mary’s.

Sunday 10th March

Sunday is the fourth Sunday of Lent. We also have our Sacramental commitment Mass on that day as well.

Camp

We will farewell our Year Six class on Tuesday in the capable hands of Mrs Mac and Dave O’Neil. We would like to offer Mr O’Neil our special thanks for agreeing to attend Camp for the 4 days.

Harmony Day

The school will be celebrating Harmony Day on Thursday March 21st. Children are welcome to come to school wearing clothes reflecting their cultural background or wearing orange.

The whole school will be gathering together in the undercover area at 8:45am for an assembly showcasing a piece of work that has been completed in class to commemorate the day. Parents are welcome to attend this assembly.

If you have any questions or queries, please contact your child’s class teacher.

NAPLAN

NAPLAN commences on Wednesday, 13 March for students in Year Three and Five. Testing will be conducted from 13 – 15 March, so it is important for students to be in attendance on those days. The children have been ably prepared by Mrs Reithmuller, Miss Della-Bosca and Ms Woodford.

All tests will be online, except the Year Three writing which the students will sit a paper test for.

The students have had the opportunity to familiarise themselves with the online platform by completing practise assessments.

St Patrick’s Day Mass

Year 3/4  class will be attending Mass on Friday the 15th of March.

Teddy Bears Hospital

The Medical students from Notre Dame will be conducting the Teddy Bears Hospital on Thursday 14 March for the Kindy - Year Two students.

The Teddy Bear Hospital is a community program that was developed to provide children with positive health care experiences, ease fears or anxiety associated with doctor or hospital visits, promote health and wellbeing, and increase health awareness.

It also provides medical students the opportunity to practice skills that will be necessary in the future when working with children.

The process behind the Teddy Bear Hospital is that children bring a teddy or soft toy to a pretend hospital and act as the parents of the teddy with a problem.

Could you please send a teddy to school with your child anytime next week (we will take good care of it!) but no later than Thursday morning.

Uniform Shop Update

Thank you for your patience with the arrival of the new Maroon Polos and any back orders. We have been experiencing some technical issues with QuickCliQ orders (particularly around 6th-8th Feb). All orders should now be completed, however if you are still awaiting any items, please email stmarysuniform@cewa.edu.au or contact the office so we can follow this up.

God Bless.

Mr H.

Class News

Year Five/Six

Wow! This term has just flown by. We’ve settled into the routines of Year Five and Six and the responsibilities that go with being the senior year group.

Year 6’s are waiting very patiently for week 7 to arrive so we can wear our leavers shirts and head off to camp then come back and share our exciting stories with the year 5’s.

This term in HASS we have been learning about how parliament works and things such as Bills, Acts and motions! The Hon. Mia Davies visited our class today and shared her journey into politics and the process behind creating laws. We created a class Bill to present to Mia when she arrived about EpiPens and how the government should fund EpiPens for all schools, especially those in the wheatbelt! Did you know that the 43 schools in the central wheatbelt have spent over $143 000 on providing mandated EpiPens? We hope it will eventually be presented in parliament and that everyone learns about the Wheatbelt EpiPen Bill of 2024.

Interschool Swimming Carnival

On Wednesday we had the Interschool Swimming Carnival against Merredin College and Central Wheatbelt. Thankfully the clouds cleared, and the sun was shining as our swimmers took to the pool. The day was a wonderful display not only of the students swimming talents, but some fantastic determination and sportsmanship as well.

Our student’s fought hard all day to swim their way to victory, taking out the shield with 480 points. Central Wheatbelt were a very close second coming in with 410 points, and Merredin College in 3rd on 304 points.

Thank you to the Merredin Swimming Club for the use of the lane ropes and starter, and with all of your help on the day in setting up and packing away. To the St Mary’s P & F, thank you for coordinating the sausage sizzle lunch. We are incredibly appreciative of all of your support!

"Bruce - the last great hunt"

The Shire of Merredin, Cummins Theatre is hosting “Bruce- the last great hunt” on Tuesday 26th March 2024 10.30am. This show is designed for fifteen (15) years and over and will be open to both high school students and the public

BRUCE is a loveable screw-up; he’s got one last shot at redemption but, with a lifetime of regrets hunting him down, he’s running out of space-time. Created and performed by Wyatt Nixon-Lloyd and Tim Watts, this side-splitting story is unapologetic in its minimal approach. BRUCE is a non-stop rollercoaster of action, adventure, and nostalgia.

Keeping you on the edge of your seat, BRUCE will sweep you away on an epic adventure of love and revenge. He may be just a floating block of yellow foam, but BRUCE is out to prove he’s got a heart of pure gold.

From the creator of the international smash hit The Adventures of Alvin Sputnik: Deep Sea Explorer comes a new low-fi puppetry spectacular. Get ready to blast off for an epic adventure that bends time and melts your heart. After Tim Watts’ last two Helpmann Award nominated shows (The Adventures of Alvin Sputnik: Deep Sea Explorer and It’s Dark Outside) performed to sold out crowds and rave reviews all over the world, Watts has teamed up with Nickelodeons’ Wyatt Nixon-Lloyd for BRUCE.
