PRINCIPAL’S THOUGHTS

Messages from Mr Ackerman

Year 2 Swim School

This week we have enjoyed hearing wonderful reports from our Year 2 swimmers after their participation in the School Swimming and Water Safety Program that develops water confidence and provides students with basic skills in water. Our students have demonstrated great responsibility, caring for their belongings, arriving at school on time and being adaptable to changes to their usual class programs. Swim school will continue for the next 2 weeks. Thank you to our teachers and support staff for their assistance ensuring students remain safe during the activity and when walking to and from Drummoyne Pool.

Leaders induction assembly

We look forward to celebrating student success at the induction assembly on Tuesday afternoon where 2024 students leaders will be presented with their leadership badges . We hope you can join us.

Picking up students from school during the day

Parents are asked to schedule appointments outside of school times where possible. Students are currently completing assessments for reports and it is important that they don't miss out.

If you do need to collect your child early, please phone the office when you are on your way so we have time to locate your child and have them waiting at the office.

Outstanding School Expenses

A sincere thank you to every family that has supported the school financially this year. This has enabled us to provide quality programs and learning resources for the children. As we approach the end of the year we now need to balance the books!

To this end, families with payments owing will be sent a statement next week outlining any overdue amounts. Your support in finalising school accounts before the end of November would be greatly appreciated.

November P&C Meeting

The last P&C meeting for 2023 will be held next Tuesday 21st November in the library from 7.30pm. We hope you can plan to join us.

FROM THE DEPUTY'S DESK

Student Use of Digital Devices

We seek your support in assisting your child to demonstrate their responsible use of technology at school. On arrival to school, students are to turn off their phone/device and store in their school bags until the end of the day. Watches/bands with communication capabilities are not to be used during school hours.

Devices can be used again after school, outside the school gates. Exceptions to this are in place for students waiting on school grounds to catch the bus after school where parent contact is required.

Should a student need to contact a parent or carer during the school day, they should ask their teacher or the admin office for permission to use the school’s phone.

During school hours, parents and carers are asked to only contact their children via the school office.

Inspired by John Coburn's 'Curtain of the Sun,' in the Sydney Opera House, 5/6O used collage and a limited colour palette to create their representations of a heat wave.

Students receive values certificates from their teachers throughout the year for demonstrating our values of Respect, Responsibility and Resilience.

Once a student receives 5 values certificates, they are able to trade them in at the school office for a Principal's Award.  The 5 values certificates can be a combination of the 3 school values and come from any year the student has been in.

Once the student has received 3 Principal's Awards, they can bring those 3 awards to the school office and choose their Principal's Badge from one of the 3 values.

Year 6 Community Languages Restaurant visits

Greek restaurant report

Last Friday we caught the bus to a Greek restaurant called Georgia’s Koutouki. They were really warm and welcoming on arrival. We went to the back of the restaurant and took a seat. They had the tables set up with water, cups, cutlery and an apple juice popper.

After around 10 minutes of waiting we were served a small but yummy patisserie with feta cheese in a roll (τυροπιτα). It was really hot but delicious at the same time. We waited for another 20 minutes for our main meal. The dish consisted of chicken souvlaki, hot chips, Greek salad, pita and tzatziki.

After finishing our main meal they cranked up the Greek music. We all got up and started dancing. Mrs Skontos taught us some Greek dance moves.

A little while later, and after a lot of dancing, we were a bit peckish so dessert was served up. Rice Pudding! The flavour was all there; it was just a bit watery but even though it was still delectable.

We ended the day off with even more dancing and a quick quiz. Throughout the quiz we were taught a lesson about a special cup (Pythagorean Cup). It's a special cup with a hole in it. It’s meant to teach us to only have as much as we need and not to be greedy, otherwise you’ll lose it all! Pythagoras was an Ancient Greek philosopher and mathematician.

After a long day filled with yummy food, fun and dancing to the Greek music we arrived back at school at around recess time.

Italian restaurant report

Last week the Year 6 students went on an Italian lunch. The year 6 Italian lunch was a great experience. It was a fun and great way to immerse yourself in Italian culture. The food was amazing and we enjoyed the vast variety of pizza and pasta like pepperoni, cheese and more.

We also practised some Italian by performing a play or a song in front of the whole Italian Year 6 group.  There were performances of Ciao Lisa, Ciao ragazzi and the colour song.  We enjoyed every second of it and we couldn’t eat anything else for the rest of the school day.  We really enjoyed this day and would like to thank the language teachers for their efforts.

Thank you to our wonderful parent volunteers Tamara, Dee, Nurila, Angela and Erika. Thank you also to our student volunteers Triet, Kornei, Ava, Cyra, Asher and Shireen.

If you are unable to make your volunteer shift please let the canteen know ASAP by calling 9819 7665 or call the school office on 9181 2636. Alternatively you can email us at:  canteen@drummoynepublicschool.com.au . Unfortunately last Friday a volunteer didn't make it for their shift which left Catherine and just one volunteer to assemble sausage dogs, package lunches, and cook toasties for 170 students. This proved to be very stressful! If you let us know we can ask for someone else to fill the shift. Thank you in advance for your understanding and support.
