Drummoyne Public School

Term 1 Week 3 Newsletter - Friday 14 February 2025

FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK

Dear Drummoyne PS Community,

Meet the Teacher’s Evening & Parent/Teacher Interviews

In response to last year’s parent survey results regarding beginning-of-year organisation and communication, this year,  we have moved our Meet the Teachers Evening and Parent-Teacher Interviews earlier in the term. Through these changes, we hope to ensure that we are working in partnership with you and keeping you informed about your child’s learning right from the start. These events are a great chance to meet your child’s teacher/s, ask questions and build a positive home-school relationship. There is a weight of evidence that shows strong partnerships between families and schools helps students to thrive - both academically and socially. I hope to see you all take advantage of these opportunities to meet with us.

Permission to Publish & Social Media

Next week, we will be emailing out our General Permission Forms for 2025, which include a section for Permission to Publish. Giving this permission allows us to celebrate and acknowledge our students' achievements through our newsletter, website, and DPS Facebook page. Please note that no photos or information will be shared with the media or external agencies without first seeking specific permission from parents.

We would also like to remind our families that images of other children and/or staff should not be posted on social media, or made publicly available, without prior consent. As a school, we take our duty of care very seriously and there are many important reasons why some families choose not to have their child/ren’s photos published. As a community, we ask for your understanding and respect for these considerations.

P&C: Welcome Drinks,  Second-hand Uniform Stall & February Meeting

A huge thank you to Angela (P&C President) and her team of volunteers for running the Second-Hand Uniform Stall this morning - I know  it’s always a great help for families preparing for the year ahead. Also, another big shout out to the P&C for their work in organising the upcoming Welcome Drinks which will be held next Monday in the library from 5:45 PM. This event is a fantastic way to connect with other families and be a part of our school community. The P&C plays a vital role in organising many events, such as this, throughout the year and supporting our school in innumerable other ways. I encourage all parents - especially our  new families - to get involved. Join us for the first P&C meeting next Tuesday at 7:30pm in the library - we’d love to see you there.

Regards,

John Nguyen

ALL THINGS SPORTY

AFL Clinic Tuesday 11th February

On Tuesday, we were lucky enough to have a visit from two of the Sydney Swans newest draftees Riley Bice and Ned Bowman, along with star player Will Haywood. The AFL ran a 30 minute clinic with every class which was well received by students. Information on how to participate in a 4 week coaching clinic, which will take place before school on a Friday morning, will be circulated shortly.

Swimming Carnival Tuesday 18th February

I am looking forward to seeing our students giving it their all next week. So far, the weather looks good! Sports leaders will lead their houses in chants and support all competitors. There will be an assembly once results have been collated where overall place getters and Age Champions will be recognised for their efforts. Stay tuned!

Attached below is the program with the order of events. Here is a list of housekeeping items that class teachers will go through with the students.

Housekeeping - Tips for a successful day:

  • 8:50am - Class teachers mark paper rolls in the North Playground and write numbers (unique ID no) on students. Students will then be directed to house areas for dismissal.
  • Students walk to the pool in house groups and sit in house groups on arrival.
  • Students will come to  school wearing their swimmers underneath their sports uniform. Change rooms are not available. No one should be using the showers.
  • Toilets are located near the marshalling area, towards the canteen. Students must ask a teacher and go with a buddy.
  • The marshalling area is near the announcing area, also towards the canteen.
  • The First Aid desk is located near the marshalling area. This is where class rolls will be located if a child needs to be signed out early..

New School Recorder & String Ensembles: Festival of Instrumental Music 2025

For the first time in over a decade, Drummoyne Public School has the prestigious honour of sending 35 students to perform at the Sydney Opera House as part of this year's Festival of Instrumental Music. We are delighted to be part of this prestigious event and look forward to forming our new recorder and string ensembles for the occasion.

We have the opportunity to include 5 strings players and up to 30 recorder players (no prior experience with reading music or playing the recorder is required - everyone will be beginners, learning together).

Students must commit to all rehearsals and practise at home. Recorders, training, and rehearsals will be provided at DPS by Mrs Sole, every Wednesday morning at 8:30am. The performance will take place in September 2025.

Students who already play a string instrument with a music tutor are encouraged to email Mrs Sole at suzanne.sole@det.nsw.edu.au to express their interest.

Stage 2 and Stage 3 students are invited to attend a Festival of Instrumental Music discovery session to learn more about the concert and how easy it is to get involved. Stage 1 students currently learning a woodwind or string instrument are also welcome. This session will be held in Mrs Sole’s CAPA room on Wednesday, 19th February at 8:30am.

Looking forward to seeing you there!

    Mrs Sole

    Stage 2 Choir

Yesterday I attended a workshop where Stage 2 Choir teachers from all over NSW gathered to learn the songs to this years Primary Proms  - a serious of choral concerts held at the Town Hall for Stage 2 Choirs. We were again accepted into the program after a gruelling audition process towards the end of last year. 30 students will be selected to participate in the Daintree concert on Wednesday 24 September 2025.

For now, I'd like to invite all interested Stage 2 students to join myself and Mrs Skontos next Thursday morning at 8.30am (meet at the front of the school). I encourage everyone who is curious to come along for the first few weeks - no strings attached! I will be asking for student commitment - practising at home, turning up to rehearsals on time -  before the end of Term 1.

A Google Classroom will be set up with access to music and lyrics for the students.  More information to come!
