Drummoyne Public School

Term 2 Week 5 Newsletter - Friday 31 May 2024

FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK

Dear Drummoyne PS Community,

Zone Cross Country

I was pleased to be able to sneak out of school this week to cheer on our athletes at the Inner West PSSA Zone Cross Country Carnival. Watching our students run with determination and enthusiasm was very inspiring and the spirit of camaraderie, as fellow students cheered on their teammates, was fantastic to see. I couldn't be more proud of the students who represented our school on the day with seven of them progressing through to the Regional Carnival and two others making the reserve list.

Reconciliation Week

It has been a profound and enriching week for our students, this week, as we have celebrated Aboriginal culture and our country’s Indigenous history as part of Reconciliation Week. Our commemorations culminated, yesterday and today, with a memorable incursion with Aunty Theresa, a Wangal woman whose visit provided our students with a deep understanding of Aboriginal culture and history through storytelling, traditional songs, and interactive activities. Aunty Theresa's warmth and wisdom captivated the students, fostering a sense of respect for, and connection to, the rich heritage of our First Nations people. At Drummoyne PS we are committed to continuing the journey of reconciliation within our school community and plans are in place to partner with Aunty Theresa to create an Indigenous Bush Tucker garden - watch this space!

Kindergarten Open Morning

We are excited to be welcoming already-enrolled and prospective Kindergarten students and their families to our Kindergarten Open Morning next Thursday, 6th June, from 9:30 to 10:30am. Please spread the word about our wonderful school community - all families with preschool aged children are welcome to attend.

Survey for our Debaters

Finally, please see below for a special request from our Stage 3 Debating team,

For our debate, our topic is "that Australians should have a four day working week" and we would like parents to complete our survey that asks questions about whether parents would like a four day working week or not. We will be incorporating the data collected into our debate speeches.

FROM THE DEPUTY'S DESK

School Uniform

Wearing our school uniform promotes a sense of belonging for our students and creates a positive identity for our school community. School uniforms also contribute to the personal safety of our students by allowing easier recognition of students inside the school and in the community.

Our students wear the uniform during school hours, while travelling to and from school, and when engaged in school activities out of school hours.

We appreciate your continued support in ensuring your child/ren wear the DPS school uniform. A reminder we also regularly have 2nd hand sales which are advertised in the newsletter. These are a great way to pick up an extra hat or jumper as a spare when needed. Labelling clothing items allows our staff to return items to your child/ren.

Should you require financial assistance in purchasing uniforms, please contact the school.

Class of the Week - 1/2D

Can we persuade you?

This week class 1/2D had a visit from Lyndelle B (Maddie’s Mum) to share with us what she does for work. She is a barrister. Lyndelle spoke to us about what barristers do, what they wear and what a courtroom looks like. She also shared with us some techniques she uses to persuade a judge to agree with her!

Class 1/2D used the tips and tricks that Lyndelle shared and used them in our persuasive writing this week. Thank you Lyndelle for coming in and sharing with 1/2D!!

We read the book: 'Please, Open this book!' by Adam Lehrhaupt and wrote some reasons we think the book should be left open!

Have we persuaded you??

PBL AWARDS

Positive Behaviours for Learning (PBL) tokens

Tokens are handed out to students who demonstrate our school values of Respect, Responsibility, and Resilience. Students post the tokens in the collection tubes divided by house teams. The tokens are counted at the end of each week, and the ongoing totals are displayed on our school notice board outside the office.
The house with the most tokens at the end of each term will be rewarded with a celebration day. This term, the winning house will be allowed to wear mufti for the day.

Week 5 PBL Token House Point Tally

THIS WEEK AT DPS

This week's Reconciliation assembly was hosted by our prefects and Mrs Buchanan

Aunty Theresa

Aunty Theresa Ardler from Gweagal Cultural Connections visited us on Thursday and Friday to engage students in activities related to reconciliation. This included storytelling, art projects, and discussions about Indigenous culture and history.

National Sorry Day

This week Kindergarten students created some purple Native Hibiscus to commemorate National Sorry Day. The Native Hibiscus is the commemorative flower for The Stolen Generations. The Native Hibiscus is recognised by the National Stolen Generations Alliance as the official symbol for Sorry Day. This flower was chosen because it is found widely across Australia and is a survivor of Australia’s harsh climate.

Peer Support Program

Week 5

During Peer Support this week children looked at how to play in a friendly way in order to maintain friends and build positive relationships. Through various activities children discovered the importance of taking turns and having consistent rules throughout a game.

This week please help your child practise these skills by encouraging them to play games with siblings, family or friends.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Tournament of Minds Club

Tournament of Minds (ToM) Club is held every Monday in the PL room for Stage 3 students. Each week, Mrs Mooney and Miss Adams conduct an exhilarating task that we must work together to complete.

Over the course of the past three weeks, we have learnt to utilise our creativity and teamwork skills to create a fabulous end result in under 15 minutes. In the first week of TOM, we learnt how to create stunning costumes and pose for freeze frames. At our most recent TOM lesson we created images out of post-it notes.

Thank you to Mrs Mooney and Miss Adams for hosting TOM club each week.

Aria S and Delilah F - 5/6O

    P&C ANNOUNCEMENTS

    P&C Update

It was great to meet a couple of new faces at the recent P&C meeting, and hear from Mr Nguyen about the school curriculum, our Reconciliation Action Plan, and all the before & after school activities available for our students. It's really worthwhile coming along to monthly meetings to stay up to date with what goes on at DPS, or offer any new ideas you have for the school community.

Right now the P&C are working towards the Trivia Night on Friday 21 June and the Fete on Sunday 25 August. It takes many great ideas and all hands on deck to make these events happen, so please consider putting your hand up for a fete role that interests you (stalls, raffle draws, ticket booth, marketing, set-up, pack-down, BBQ etc).

Please reach out to me directly (email below) or through the office, who can pass your details on. We need ample volunteers so that we can give our kids the DPS fete they love so much!

Our next P&C meeting will be held on Tuesday 18 June from 7.30pm.

    How can you help?

With 86 days to go, we are seeking volunteers for key fete committee roles to help make the event a success.
