Dear families & friends

We are well through the term now and into our Inquiry learning with a focus on character and knowing our character strengths.

We had a fabulous Book Week celebration with everyone getting into the spirit. It was lovely to see so many families join us for our parade and so much colour and fun had by students and staff in their costumes.

Dental Van

The dental van will be visiting us again this year on the 23rd and 24th September. Hard copy order forms came home with your child or if you would like another please ask Gillian.  Otherwise you can  scan the barcode on the attached flyer.

The students that have attended in the previous years have really enjoyed the experience.  The team really make the experience a positive one and is a great way to introduce your child to a dentist for the first time.

Any questions please either contact the Dental Van direct or Gillian.

Primary

Primary Classes Excursion to the Art Gallery and Space Theatre

On Thursday 22nd August the primary classes enjoyed an art excursion to the Art Gallery of South Australia (AGSA) and the Space Theatre. At AGSA  the students attended a workshop at the studio where they focused on ‘biomorphalism’- a technique in Surrealism and is in response to the exhibition ‘Surrender and Catch’ by artist Brent Harris. Following the workshop students explored the current Art Gallery exhibitions. The day concluded with a performance at the Space Theatre called ‘Little Murmur’. This was a dance piece which is based on the topic of dyslexia and the Artist’s personal life story.

Hi From Steve's P1 Class

In P1, we have been working hard in Mathematics this term, with the opening of a market where students could buy and sell coloured chips in order to increase or decrease their overall monetry amount, with some taxes and the occasional windfall coming their way. We nominated one or two people to be the banker and looked at giving and receiving correct change in order to see if we could make money over a ten day period. We are currently working out ways to represent our data, looking at various graphing techniques. During Science week, Gillian was kind enough to bring in some dry ice (solid CO2) and we looked at the process of sublimation in various ways.

In writing we have been developing our narratives, including looking at dialogue and scene setting as ways in which we can move our narratives along.  Our new literacy rotation groupings have settled in well, and are off and running with their new novels.

News from Laura's Class

Laura's class have been exploring and creating procedural texts. This topic was a firm favourite, 'How to Leave School Early'.

Juniors

Hello from Emma's Juniors

In inquiry, we have been unpacking the topic ‘Stories of Success’ through exploring storytelling and looking at different character strengths. Students are enjoying working collaboratively to create stories using different manipulatives. Last week students unpacked the character strengths of courage, perseverance, curiosity, love of learning, creativity and open mindedness. Students used their problem solving skills to work in groups to create a ball using different materials. Students then tested them on the green.

Art and HPE

Visual Arts with Camille

Primary students have undertaken an inquiry circle that explored how different artists have used mark-making techniques to create a sense of movement. Then they have had a first go at short 5 minute gestural drawings, drawing classmates from life with soft pastel.

Health and Physical Education with Leigh

Recently in health, we have been wrapping up our healthy eating unit. Students are currently working on a range of projects demonstrating their knowledge. In P.E. we have been gearing up for sports day next week. We have been practicing a range of the events that will be held on the day. Well done to all three of our soccer teams, who finished their last games over the weekend. All the participating students should be extremely proud of their effort and improvement over the season!

CBCA Book Week

A highlight of our school year is Book Week which we  celebrated on Friday 23rd August. This year's theme was 'Reading is Magic'. Students and staff came dressed as their favourite book character and paraded on the green in front of their families. It was evident that that students and their families had put a lot of thought into the costumes and make up. Following the parade students divided into their reading buddy groups to participate in some fun book related activities.

Premier's Reading Challenge (PRC)

A reminder that the final day of the Challenge is this term on Wednesday 4th September (week 7). Record sheets must be handed in to Kelly or Gillian no later than this date but can also be handed in any time before if the student has completed the Challenge. Awards are given to students who have completed the Challenge (once the school has received them) at an assembly in Term 4. The Premier’s Reading Challenge website:

Book Borrowing & Returns

Students have the opportunity to borrow books from the Resource Pod during scheduled class times and when the Pod is open at break times. All books are on loan for two weeks and the due date can be found on a slip attached to the inside back cover of the book or on a book mark. Please return the books by the due date or before if finished, as other students may be waiting to borrow them.

Scholastic Book Club

Students have received Book Club issue 6, which has another great offer with every order receiving a $5 promotional code to use in the next issue (#7).  In addition, for every order placed the school receives reward points which are used to purchase books for the library. Student orders can be placed online at:

Knitting Club

The Knitting Club continues this term with two groups knitting at one break time twice a week. It has proven very popular, so if you are interested please see Kelly and she will put your name down on the waiting list.

Hear what a couple of our knitters have to say about the Knitting Club.

Leah "I am doing the basic stitch, the knit stitch. The knit stitch is the easiest and that's why I am doing it because I am just a beginner. I also get to take my knitting home to do."

Stella "I'm doing the purl stitch which is a bit harder. I am doing the purl stitch because I mastered the knit stitch and it was getting too easy to do."

Leah and Stella "Knitting is really fun and everyone enjoys it."
