2024 Term 4 Issue #11

From the Principal

Dear families & friends,

School Community Spirit

We have seen a lovely example of school community recently with our first ever netball team taking to the courts this term. Each week the team have shown great improvement and have been cheered on by lots of community members going along to games to show support (even when their child isn't in the team). It is such a lovely demonstration of how members of our community bond and support one another. I also want to thank Laura Batchford (P2 teacher) who has given up her own time for trainings and games each week to make sure the students had the opportunity to play.

Earlier in the year we also saw this same school spirit of support for our Year 5/6 soccer team, where many community members, staff and families, have taken the time to show support for students in a range of areas.

Student Learning Summary reports

Student reports were sent home at the end of week 6, with optional interviews offered to families.

Teachers spend quite a lot of time considering student progress and next steps in learning for each child and these reports are a snapshot of the thinking and learning that has been happening at school.

Inquiry

Inquiry in term 4 is always a different format due to timelines and events happening at the end of term. Staff made the decision to extend Inquiry, by a week, to a 6 week program as students were heavily engaged and motivated to completed their ‘machines’. They have then been able to demonstrate these to each other with much excitement.

Pupil Free Days

With two days at our disposal, we took the time as staff to think deeply about our school improvement planning pathways and how the new department strategy provides the supports needed to further develop our teaching and learning practices at Felixstow. We had our new staff for 2025 join us for the days as well which allowed us and them to get to know each other and plan together. As a team we have started developing a ‘framework for pedagogy’ for all staff which will guide both old and new staff in how we work at Felixstow.

We have also begun to frame up our Site Improvement Plan for 2025 with some forward visioning and backward planning processes. I will be sharing some of this with the Governing Council at our meeting.

Transition

We had our first transition visit, with our second one scheduled this week. We were fortunate to be able to release Sharni to be able to come in and plan and run transition for us. This gave her and students an opportunity to start developing their relationship with her, ready for next year. On the second visit we will be combining all next year’s R-2 students together so we can see how the cohort work and play together, which helps with our planning for next year as well.

We have also this year invited all this year’s R/1 families to come in and meet with Sharni briefly if they wish.

Student Learning Summary reports

Student reports were sent home at the end of week 6, with optional interviews offered to families. We encourage you to discuss your child's progress with them, so they are aware of their next steps as a learner.

Felixstow Highlights

Volleyball

Last week, the primary students competed in the South Australian Beach Volleyball Schools Festival at Glenelg beach. The students have been running their P.E  lessons this term in preparation for the festival. They have taken on all roles involved in the sport, from referees to media personnel. While we did not bring home any medals, the students did a fantastic job representing the school across the day. Well done!

Primary

Hi From Steve's P1 Class

This term has been packed with exciting activities for P1. Our excursion to the Botanic Gardens and the Chihuly exhibition was a day to remember. The glass sculptures by Chihuly were incredible, with their bright colours and unique designs fitting right in with the beautiful surroundings of the gardens. It was a long day, and we were definitely tired by the end, but it was so much fun exploring and learning together. Back at school, we’ve been keeping busy in lots of ways. In Inquiry, we’re continuing to work on our simple machine systems, finding creative ways to make them even better. In Maths, we’re designing a schedule for a mock excursion, which has been a great way to practice planning and managing time. And in Literacy, we’ve been having fun experimenting with different types of poetry and letting our imaginations run wild. It’s been a busy term, but we’ve loved every minute of it.

Juniors

Emma's J2 Class News

In literacy groups, we have been focusing on become fluent readers through developing skills such as expression and pausing. Students have been working in pairs to partner read and play various games related to fluency. The year 2s and 3s have also been working with Andrea in readers theatre while the year 1s have been working with Emma. “Readers theatre is good because you get to act like a character in the play and practice your expression and rate.” Hudson

Juniper's juniors

We had a great time helping the pre service teachers learn more about how to be good teachers. They had lots of fun activities for us to do for maths and literacy, and helped us with our inquiry project.

We also had a great time on our excursion to the Chihuly glass exhibition at the Botanic Gardens. We were noticing the different shapes used in the sculptures.  The best parts of the day were going on the bus and playing in the giant fig trees in Botanic Park.

Art and HPE

Visual Arts with Camille

Juniors have been using printmaking techniques to create a print inspired by simple systems; i.e. wheel and axel, incline plane, pulley or lever. They have then used soft pastel to add colour in a colour scheme of their choice. Years 3-5 have been designing imaginative and mechanical systems and machines inspired by Heath Robinson's illustrations. Year 6's have been busy designing a mural for their leaver's art project .

Health and Physical Education with Leigh

During health over the past few weeks, the juniors have had a focus on road and water safety. The primary students have been exploring how we can create a safe school community by avoiding a range of stereotypes. In P.E, we have been looking at a range of motor skills related to volleyball. We will be finishing off the term with some badminton coaching from a specialist coach from Badminton SA.

Resource Hub

All library books must be returned to the library by Friday 29th November (week 7), so that staff can commence the annual stocktake of library resources. Thank you in advance for your co-operation.
