From the Principal

At Telopea Public School, each and every family belongs. I value the cultural diversity of our school and the rich learning that comes from having students from 24 different language backgrounds. In class today, as part of our Harmony Week celebrations, students have been discussing the theme of "Everyone Belongs" and what that looks like in terms of respect, understanding & inclusiveness at our school.  We celebrate a sense of belonging for all Australians, from the traditional custodians of the land to those who have come from many countries around the world. I encourage you to continue those conversations with your children at home so that we can work together to ensure our school continues to be a place where everyone belongs and learning can thrive. I would like to thank Ms Michie & Miss Pip for their efforts in organising a wonderful Harmony Day for our students and families today.

Behaviour

From time to time in schools, we need to remind students, parents and carers of appropriate behaviour and how to manage situations when things go wrong. Whilst we have had a great start to the school year, we have seen an escalation in negative behaviours and students needing reflection time in recent weeks.

When major behaviour incidents occur at school, you will be informed, either through a phone call, letter or in person. We ask that you do not provide excuses for your child’s behaviour but help them take responsibility. Students will often, slightly change their version of events to avoid disappointing their parents or carers. Your child will only provide their perspective and whilst there may be elements of the truth, there may be key information missing. At school, we are well placed to have an impartial view of events based on the best facts at hand. We can talk to ALL of the students involved and have a thorough understanding of what has occurred and why. We can work together to help children take responsibility for their behaviour, reflect on their choices and make a better plan for next time.

When incidents occur, please contact your child’s teacher. Do not approach the other student directly and do not approach the other student’s parents/carers. When you approach a child or other parent, the situation escalates. You may be acting on information from your child that may not be complete in its detail. In these situations, the children will often resolve the situation and move on, whilst the parents' relationship is left fractured.

I encourage you to read over the NSW Government's School Community Charter which clearly outlines the responsibilities of parents, carers, educators and school staff in NSW public schools to ensure our learning environments are collaborative, supportive and cohesive.

School Photos

A reminder that our annual school photos are on  Wednesday 27 March 2024

Students are to wear their full summer uniform on this day.

We kindly ask that students arrive promptly by 8.55am to ensure the smooth running of the day. Photos commence immediately after the 9am bell.

Important notes:

Staff photos are held before the 9am bell. This may mean that the office is unattended before this time.

The uniform shop will be closed on the morning of the photos.

If you would like to purchase a photo package, please ensure that you return the envelope and payment to the office by Friday 22 March 2024.

Thank you for your cooperation.

Year 7 2025 Expression of Interest Forms

A gentle reminder for all Year 6 students moving to Year 7 in 2025, Expression of Interest Forms are now due by no later than Friday 22nd March 2024.

Zone Swimming Carnival

A huge congratulations to Sophie in Year 3 who represented Telopea PS at the Merrylands-Parramatta Zone Swimming Carnival on Wednesday 6 March at Merrylands Pool.

Sophie came 11th out of 24 swimmers in the 9 years girls 50m freestyle .

She did an amazing job and we are so proud of her.

Easter Hat Parade K-2

Our annual Easter Hat Parade will be held on Thursday 28th March from 10:15am to 11:30am in the COLA. This year we are transitioning to this being a K-2 event. Our 3-6 classes will come along to watch the parade and some special performances from our K-2 students. Any students in 3-6 who wish to wear a hat will be given the opportunity to parade. Parents and carers are welcome to come along and join us for a picnic morning tea at recess time. Please bring your own morning tea and a picnic rug.

Attendance Matters!

There are 6 days to go in our Term 1 attendance challenge. We currently have 87 students who have attended greater than 95% during the challenge period and many more who can still reach that mark and be eligible for a ticket in our Easter Raffle. Below is a picture of our first prize hamper including the special signed Parramatta Eels Jersey. We also have lots of minor prizes to give away. Keep up the great work Telopea and remember every day at school matters.

Harmony Day 2024

It was lovely to see so many families this morning at our Harmony Day breakfast.

Harmony Day is a celebration that recognises our diversity and brings together Australians from all different backgrounds. It's about inclusiveness, respect and a sense of belonging for everyone.

It has been wonderful to see so many of our students sharing stories and learning about our diverse school community.

Library News

Borrowing Books

Borrowing books is an important part of school life and all students at our school are able to borrow each week. Each class has an assigned library day where they visit the library, return and borrow books, listen to a book and complete an activity with the Library Teacher.

The number of books your child can borrow for Term 1 is:

K -2: 2 Books

3 to 6: 3 Books

Returning Books

We encourage students to read their book at home or in the classroom, take care of them and return them the following week. If your child is away on their library day, they are welcome to come and see me in the library at lunch time on Mondays and Wednesdays to return their books and borrow some new ones.

Library Bags

Every student needs a library bag to borrow books. This helps us keep our books in good condition and avoid any damage. Any type of bag you have at home is fine, a grocery bag will do the job 😊

Lunch time opening times for students:

The library is open on Mondays and Wednesdays at lunch time.

Class library days: Please note that occasionally these days may change depending on other school events.

The Big Vegie Crunch

Get ready to crunch! On Friday 22nd March, our school will take part in The Big Vegie Crunch. We will all be crunching on vegetables at recess time - yum!

The Big Vegie Crunch is the main event of Vegetable Week (18-22 March). It’s a fun event to get kids excited about eating vegies and build healthy eating habits. To learn more, visit the website: https://healthy-kids.com.au/teachers/vegetable-week-the-big-vegie-crunch/

Did you know that children aged 4 and over need at least 4½-5 serves of vegetables each day? It helps them grow and learn in a healthy way. Not enough Australian kids eat enough vegies. That's why we’re taking part in The Big Vegie Crunch & Vegetable Week. Let’s build healthy habits for life.

Students at Telopea PS will be provided with a variety of vegies to crunch on at recess this Friday. This is a free initiative to help our students enjoy more healthy foods and maybe try something new with their peers which they normally wouldn't eat at home! We will also be planting vegetable seeds to harvest even more vegetables throughout the year from our garden.

Welcome to the first edition of Telopea’s Garden News. Every month we will share what has been happening in the garden. We have been busy bees!

Weeds, weeds, weeds – even taller than Mrs Andonenas! The heat and rain over the summer holidays ensured that the weeds in the garden grew to record-breaking heights. Nothing that a good whipper snipper and muscle power couldn’t take care of though. All classes have been working extra hard these last few weeks pulling out as many weeds as they can. Great work everyone. The garden is looking fantastic and we are almost ready to start our autumn and winter seedlings. Thank you to Jim, our General Assistant, for clearing a safe path amongst the weeds.

Despite the weeds, some plants we planted last year survived and thrived. Last week, Year 4 managed to harvest enough cherry tomatoes and cucamelons for everyone in the class to enjoy. It was the first time trying a cucamelon as this is the first year we have grown them in our garden. Students have described them as tasting like a lemony cucumber. They are proving to be very popular!

Thank you to all students for your hard work – keep gardening!

Native Beehives

Earlier in the term students had the privilege of witnessing our stingless native bee (Tetragonula carbonaria) hives being split. Telopea Public School has two native bee hives which were purchased by Pip and the Schools as Community Centres (SaCC) project in 2022. The hives were finally heavy enough to be split so Melissa from Sydney Stingless Bees – who provided us with the hives and bees – came to our school to split the two hives. Splitting the hives involves separating the two sections of each hive and adding a new section to each half, making four hives out of the two original hives. One of the new hives was then donated to Green Trees Early Learning Centre for them to enjoy and learn about stingless native bees.

Students were able to watch the splitting of one hive at lunch time and the 5/6 Emus watched the splitting of the other (and were lucky enough to even try some honey!). It was a fascinating thing to see and everyone had many questions to ask. Melissa was a wealth of knowledge and we all learnt something that day!

I extend a very big thank you to Pip and the SaCC project for purchasing these hives and installing them at our school. We are very lucky to be able to watch these busy little bees every day. They work hard collecting pollen and play a very important role in our garden, pollinating our flowers, fruit trees and vegetables.

What's Happening Year 1 Quokkas

Year 1 Quokkas have been working hard in Mathematics this term. We have been focusing on a variety of Numbers concepts. This has included place value, efficiently reading, and writing numbers to 100, ordering numbers as well as identifying odd and even numbers. We have even been practising our counting whilst moving our bodies and staying fit. There are just so many fun ways to do Maths!

For Visual Art we have all created a self-portrait. We talked about how we all look different and that our features such as our hair, eye and skin colour make us special and unique. We even learnt about one of the most famous portraits in the world, The Mona Lisa. Can you try and guess which Year 1 students these self-portraits are of?

Clothing Pool

Do you have an old uniform that is no longer needed?

Our clothing pool is running low, we would welcome any donations of unwanted uniforms.

You can drop these to the office at any time.

Sport Polo Shirt - new uniform item

A reminder that the new sport polo shirt uniform item is now available for purchase in the uniform shop. The polo shirts are $25 each. They can be worn on Sport's Day. This new uniform item will be phased in over a 2-year period and is optional in 2024 and 2025. Students may continue to wear the coloured sport t-shirts if they wish during the phase in period.

We have noticed a number of students entering via the carpark gate near the Admin block especially on Breakfast Club mornings. Please remind your child/ren that they should continue to use the Student Pedestrian Gate on these days.

Canteen - Lunch Orders

Canteen orders are available on Mondays and Fridays. You are able to order up to 8am on these days.

School Attendance

School Attendance

Regular school attendance is a legal requirement for all children. Please ensure that your child/ren are at school by 8.55am, ready for morning assembly at 9.00am.

School times are as follows;

9.00am                      School commences

11.00-11.30am         Recess

1.15-2.00pm             Lunch

3.00pm                      School finishes

All attendance is now recorded electronically, this includes late, early and sick bay departures. Please be patient with staff whilst we record and process these.

ABSENCES

A reminder that if your child/ren are away from school we ask that you provide an explanation via the School Bytes Parent Portal or by responding to the text message.

If you child is away sick for more than two consecutive days you are required to provide a medical certificate.

Important Reminders

COLLECTING STUDENTS FROM SCHOOL

A reminder that if you have made arrangements for someone to collect your child/ren that is outside of your normal arrangements, please ensure that you have notified the office so we are aware and can let other staff members know in a timely manner.  This applies to leaving early and for the end of the day.

SAFETY

A reminder to all students and parents that entry to the School is via the Pedestrian gate on Chestnut Ave located near Block D. This is for everyone's safety. If you require disabled access there are two entry points into the school via the ramp into the school office and via the gate on the corner of Sturt and Manson Streets.

NOTES SENT HOME

On occasion important notes will be sent home. Please ensure you remember to check your child's bag each day.

CELEBRATIONS

Here at TPS we enjoy celebrating student’s birthdays. You are most welcome to bring in something to celebrate but we ask that individual store bought small bite size cupcakes or individually wrapped sweets are brought in to school as this makes it easier for the students to eat. A large cake makes it difficult to distribute to their classmates.

LOST PROPERTY

There are a number of items in the Lost Property box which do not have names on them. If your child is missing an item, please check this box which is located in the D Block breezeway.

CONTACT INFORMATION OR CIRCUMSTANCE CHANGE

Please ensure that your contact details are up to date. It is important that the School be able to contact you in case of your child being ill, a child not being collected from school or in case of emergency etc. If your family circumstances change, please also provide the school with any updated documentation.

You can notify the school of any changes or updates via written confirmation or complete the template form located in the office foyer.

MOBILE PHONES OR DEVICES

If you require your child to carry a mobile phone/device, you will be required to complete a permission note (please see the school office if you require this note). Student mobile phones/device are to be turned off and handed to the school office during school hours in the morning. Mobile phones/devices will be returned to the students at the end of each day.

Uniform Shop

Uniforms can be purchased from the uniform shop every Wednesday between 8.45-11.00am. We thank you in advance for your patience during these busy times.

We are pleased to advise we now have the option of Eftpos for purchases. Alternatively cash is still accepted, the correct change is much appreciated. A current price list is located in the office foyer.

HANDY HINT: Ensure that you label all items of clothing (including hats) for your child/ren, this makes it easier to return lost items.
