At Telopea Public School, each and every family belongs. I value the cultural diversity of our school and the rich learning that comes from having students from 24 different language backgrounds. In class today, as part of our Harmony Week celebrations, students have been discussing the theme of "Everyone Belongs" and what that looks like in terms of respect, understanding & inclusiveness at our school. We celebrate a sense of belonging for all Australians, from the traditional custodians of the land to those who have come from many countries around the world. I encourage you to continue those conversations with your children at home so that we can work together to ensure our school continues to be a place where everyone belongs and learning can thrive. I would like to thank Ms Michie & Miss Pip for their efforts in organising a wonderful Harmony Day for our students and families today.
Behaviour
From time to time in schools, we need to remind students, parents and carers of appropriate behaviour and how to manage situations when things go wrong. Whilst we have had a great start to the school year, we have seen an escalation in negative behaviours and students needing reflection time in recent weeks.
When major behaviour incidents occur at school, you will be informed, either through a phone call, letter or in person. We ask that you do not provide excuses for your child’s behaviour but help them take responsibility. Students will often, slightly change their version of events to avoid disappointing their parents or carers. Your child will only provide their perspective and whilst there may be elements of the truth, there may be key information missing. At school, we are well placed to have an impartial view of events based on the best facts at hand. We can talk to ALL of the students involved and have a thorough understanding of what has occurred and why. We can work together to help children take responsibility for their behaviour, reflect on their choices and make a better plan for next time.
When incidents occur, please contact your child’s teacher. Do not approach the other student directly and do not approach the other student’s parents/carers. When you approach a child or other parent, the situation escalates. You may be acting on information from your child that may not be complete in its detail. In these situations, the children will often resolve the situation and move on, whilst the parents' relationship is left fractured.
I encourage you to read over the NSW Government's School Community Charter which clearly outlines the responsibilities of parents, carers, educators and school staff in NSW public schools to ensure our learning environments are collaborative, supportive and cohesive.
