Drummoyne Public School

Term 4 Week 3 Newsletter - Friday 31 October 2025

FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK

Dear Drummoyne PS Community,

World Teachers’ Day

We celebrated World Teachers’ Day Thursday this week (a day early, since our Kindy team out on an excursion!) with a delicious lunch provided by our P&C. It was a great opportunity for staff to pause, share a meal together and reflect on the important work we do as public educators - not just in teaching knowledge and skills, but in building strong, caring relationships with our students every day. A huge thank you to our P&C for helping make the day special - our teachers certainly enjoyed the lunch and the recognition!

Of course, you don’t have to wait until World Teachers’ Day to let our teachers know their work is appreciated. It’s always nice to receive feedback and, if you have a moment, I encourage you to reach out any time to let our teachers know how valued they are.

P&C Disco

A huge thank you to Susan Murray for coordinating last Friday’s P&C disco - her second year running the show! The feedback from staff, parents and students alike has been glowing, with lots of happy (and very energetic!) students lighting up the dance floor.

These events are such a highlight for our students and create memories that last well beyond the night itself. They simply wouldn’t happen without the time, energy and organisation of our parent and teacher volunteers. Your efforts really do bring our school community together.

Ultimate Fun with Ultimate Frisbee!

Our Ultimate Frisbee program kicked off this week through the Government’s subsidised Sporting Schools initiative. At Drummoyne, we’re always looking for ways to get students trying different sports and activities, and following on from our Term 2 lacrosse program, the Ultimate Frisbee program is another great example of students discovering new skills (and hidden talents!) in sports they may not have tried before. Over the next three weeks, students will be learning new skills, teamwork and strategy, and having a good time doing it! Programs like this are a great way to broaden our students’ experiences and get everyone moving and having fun together.

Planning Ahead for 2026

Planning for 2026 is already well underway and it’s important that we have the most accurate picture possible of our enrolments for next year. If your family’s plans have changed or you’re aware of any moves on the horizon, please let us know - it really helps us plan our classes and staffing with confidence.

As we look ahead, we’re always keen to continue growing our fabulous school community here at Drummoyne and we know that parent word of mouth is one of the best ways to promote our school. If you have friends, family or neighbours with school-aged children, please tell them about our wonderful school - and send them my way for a tour!

Regards,

John Nguyen

Culture Day visit to Orange Grove P.S.

On Friday I went to a culture day at Orange Grove Public School.

First we got split into four groups. Before we started the activities, we did a smoking ceremony and learnt that doing a smoking ceremony is an Aboriginal custom where native plants are burnt to produce smoke, which is used to cleanse and purify people and places.

I was in group four. We firstly did cricket where I met my friend Tahlia , it was great fun except it was really hot . Next, my group went to free play where I played tips for ages with my friends from Five Dock and Orange Grove.

Next we had lunch out in the sun which was followed by art with Josh and Liam. We did hand stencils (with spray paint) which in Aboriginal culture is like a signature and no one can replicate your handprint.

Next we did weaving, and I made a green bracelet. It was really fun making them but you can also make toys and dilly bags, which are bags to carry food or hunting tools in the bush.

At the end of the day we did a dance about ochre. We did the crushing up of ochre, adding water and putting it on on your body, and how important it is to Aboriginal culture.

At the end of the day we looked at the artworks that we made during the day.

OFFICE NEWS

Notifying the School of Absence

Regular school attendance is important for your child’s learning and social development. If your child is absent from school, you must ensure that you provide the school with a written explanation.

Submit an absence using our new Parent Portal - School Bytes

The School Bytes Parent App allows you to quickly and easily submit an absence notification to the school, or respond to an absence that has been recorded but not yet explained. This is especially helpful for future planned absences, such as a scheduled medical appointment.

Late arrival or early departure

Parents must come to the office and sign their child/ren in or out of school when arriving late or leaving early. This ensures student attendance is correctly recorded. Phoning ahead 10 minutes before you arrive when picking up early allows time to bring the student to the office.

Extended leave

Families are encouraged to travel during school holidays. If travel during school term is necessary, you can only submit up to 9 days leave on the School Bytes Parent App.

If travelling for 10 days or more, you will need to complete an Application to leave - travel This form is now electronic and can be completed within the forms section of School Bytes.

Important information if your child travels to school by bus

Tapping on and off provides better data to plan better bus services.

How can you help? Please remind your child to tap on and off and ensure your child has a valid Opal card (either a School or Child/Youth Opal card) and remind them to tap on and tap off on every trip.

To apply for a school Opal card, visit https://transportnsw.info/school-travel-apply.  Students may see onboard bus posters and Busways Community Relation Officers at afternoon loadings.  Together let’s get students into good habits of tapping on and tapping off with their Opal card.

MONTY’S MUNCH CANTEEN NEWS

Hello wonderful school community!

My name is Sivine, and together with Anna, we’re thrilled (and slightly terrified) to announce that we’ve joined the canteen team! After years of dedication, efficiency, and pure magic, our incredible Eugenie has handed over the works. She’s left some very big shoes to fill—we suspect they’re lined with organisational superpowers. Thank you, Eugenie, for everything you’ve done to keep the canteen running very close to perfection and efficiency 💛

We’ve been at it for few weeks now, and let’s just say—we’re still finding where the trays go and which button makes the oven not explode. But we’re learning fast, we’re laughing lots, and we promise: your kids will be fed (eventually and safely).

Our busiest days are Thursday and Friday, and we’d love some extra hands! If you’ve got few spare hours, a knack for chaos, or just a great sense of humour, come join us. We’re a work in progress—but a fun one!

Together, we’ll keep the canteen buzzing, the sandwiches rolling, and the laughter echoing.

A big thank you to this week's parent volunteers; Steven, Heidi, Christine and Sylvia! We are always grateful and appreciative for any help.
