A message from Clare

Good afternoon Families,

Officially, welcome back to Term Three. It was absolutely wonderful to see almost every family at our Family Conferences yesterday. We had a mix of nervous and excited Middle School and Senior School children enter their conferences as they were presenting their own selected pieces to share with their parents. Many relieved young faces were seen leaving the conference accompanied by very proud parents. I was also privy to see the parents of our Prep and Junior children engage in lovely conversations with Julianne and Brooke, Nicole or Tayla and Marie. There was chatter and laughter as well as meaningful sharing of individual learning journeys. Thank you to all families who support their child so beautifully. Your partnership with us is so important and definitely has a high impact on how your child learns and their outcomes. We have PSG meetings in the next couple of weeks too which will complete our learning conversations for the term.

As you know, we are very excited about our upcoming Grandparents Day on Tuesday 23rd July. We would like YOU, our VIP guests to be seated in the parish hall by 9-ish as we will begin right on 9.15am and we don’t want you to miss a moment. A visit to the classrooms afterwards and then morning tea at 10am, back in the hall, will complete the morning.

Please make sure you RSVP for catering purposes to Debbie at schooloffice@slblackburnsth.catholic.edu.au Can’t wait to see you and our Grandparents and Grandfriends there.

In Week 3 our Senior School children will be embarking on a wonderful adventure commonly called CAMP. This is a fantastic opportunity for them to build independence, to challenge themselves to try new things within the safety of friends and peers and to feel proud that they have achieved personal goals. It is also a terrific chance for staff to get to know children outside of the normal school domain. At St Lukes, we feel very strongly that this is such a worthwhile component of our curriculum that in Week 4, our Middle School children will be venturing out to Gembrooke for an overnight camp. Later in the year, the Prep and Junior children will also have their own little experience of ‘camp’. Details will follow in Term 4.

Believe it or not, in Term 3 l begin to turn my thoughts to next year and some of the logistics l need to consider. I hope that you can join me in this by thinking about how you might be able to support our community. If you have not been on our very enthusiastic, fun P&F please make sure you consider this. I know any of the current members would happily talk to you about how this can look. It does not require a necessary huge time commitment if you can only help out with select events or it may be behind the scenes support.

Another vital role is that of the School Advisory Council (SAC). We will require 2 to 3 new members on the SAC in 2025. Members are required to attend two meetings per term, bring items for discussion that members of our community are talking about and finally guide the principal in issues concerning the school. Once again, l recommend you approach any of our current council members if you are curious about joining. Our current SAC Chairperson is Simon Meehan and other members include Julie Inglese, Nader Mitri, Richard Yeung, Victoria Smith and Jo Adams as the P&F representative.

Lastly, if you feel you cannot commit to a structured role like the ones just noted, please respond to the simple requests that appear from time to time like today’s mention for gardening help.

Holiday garden maintenance and stepping stones. We have had a hive of activity over the holidays in the garden. Kieran, our garden maintenance guy, is doing a great job maintaining our outside environment and l would have to say l am extremely proud of how our school presents. The stepping stones from the Student Entry pathway to the lower pathway is a lovely little addition to discourage people from walking across the garden. The impact of this can be seen in the considerably slower growth of plants compared to the bed opposite. The cost of maintaining this, like all things, is considerable and should not be one of the higher things on the annual budget priority list. So, it’s the little things that can make a difference…
doing the occasional weeding or collecting firewood or even if you have access to good mulch or plants (free to budget priced) for our garden beds, please contact the school office NOW. We would love to hear from you.

I’m not sure about you but the chill factor today has been extreme. A lot of children are wearing shorts, which l have mentioned is fine if that is their preferred option in Winter. Please make sure if they are cold, that they revert to the warmer winter uniform- both school and sports . We definitely don’t want children catching winter ills through catching chills. A warm jacket is recommended as an extra layer to wear OUTSIDE ONLY. Each child needs their jumper at school EVERY DAY please. They should not be wearing their jacket instead of their jumper. Thanks.

Have a great fortnight ahead. I will be taking some leave with my family up north where the sun will hopefully shine. Julie Inglese and the Leadership Team will be available to you, in my absence.

Take care

Introducing our new SRC Representatives for Semester Two- Katie, Violet, Stella, Flossy, Thomas and Alexandros. We look forward to hearing about all the great work you will be doing for our St Luke's community

Holiday Happenings- What an exciting holiday for Hugo who travelled to Auckland, New Zealand for the World Choir Games with the National Boys Choir. The boys participated in the opening and closing ceremonies and performed at many venues. They also enjoyed some sightseeing, including a visit to the Shire of Hobbiton. The National Boys Choir was awarded a silver diploma for all their efforts. Congratulations Hugo!

More holiday happenings...My Thailand Adventure

Thailand was one of the best experiences of my life. My absolute favourite part was feeding the elephants. There was one African elephant named Mami, her big ears and long pink truck were amazing. Feeding her was so fun even when the elephant next to her snuck up and tried to steal the watermelon she was eating. It was hilarious. I also swam with elephants and covered them in mud; the best thing I've ever done.                           Violet

Seniors News: Room with a view!

Last term Senior students focused on creating artwork with the use of 1 point perspective and applied this concept to designing their ‘Room with a View’. This art piece is still ongoing and some students used a picture prompt instead (shown below). This term we used our art work as inspiration to write a descriptive paragraph. Check out what our creative minds came up with…

I had just walked through the one and only ‘Extravaganza’ and well… it wasn't the brightest in my eyes! I wiped my hand across the bench, the dust stuck to my fingers. A bright green chameleon scuttled across the wall and out the window. Its limbs made shapes in the sand. The crystal clear water slid up to the shore and swept the little lizard away! I hesitate no more and jumped out of the dusty window. I scuffed my shoes off and ran over to the water, stretching out my arms and legs. - Emily

Boom, Bang, Crash, Clang. Another day trying to walk up the stairs FAILED. Everyday I try to walk up but it doesn't work again and again. A hot breeze hit my paw and lifted me up higher. I fell down on a cloud, soft and warm. Red emerged from the cloud and everyone disappeared.

Suddenly I felt like I was too… -  Violet

Picture Prompt

The floor rocked softly from side to side, a subtle sound of water swishing against the old wood. My clock abruptly toiled, striking another hour of my voyage. The small candle bringing light onto the words on my page. The reflection of the gentle fire flickered seamlessly. Faraway peaks presented themselves, towering high over the trees. The distant mountains reminded me of my out of reach family. I may never see them again, that's the scary part. - Camilla

The boat quietly tilted and the flame flickered vivid colours of sunset. My journey through the battlefields had wearied my legs, I collapsed into my old armchair as my age seemed to wither away. The battle was long and hard, some of my allies, even friends, had died on the scene. I had blood stained all over my shirt, ragged and yellow at the edges, a constant reminder of the pain I had caused. I couldn’t wait to be home but until then, I could only make this boat my home.  -Grace

One lit candle, One small cottage, One old dusty armchair, and one person sitting in that armchair, rocking back and forth.Staring across a frozen lake and into the snowy mountains. All was quiet, all was gentle. A man thinking into the past to where darkness happened. He remembered it so clearly, as he thought about it, the memory rose up into his mind.

20 years ago, it was a cold and foggy morning, he awoke on a snow flat on the mountains, in a small orange tent next to his two best mates Ted and Luke, all was calm and all was great. He remembered excitedly that today they were going to hike the tallest point of the mountain and plant the Australian Flag. Once all dressed in their gear they sat down and had a nice hot coffee. They set off nervous but ready for a challenge, as their feet sunk into the snow while walking, little did they know it would be the worst mistake of their life…  - Jenson

A cold breeze hit his face as he longingly gazed out the grand windows of Paris. This little boy was waiting for someone in particular. His father. His father that marched off to fight for his country and never came back. But the sad little boy still had hope that his father was out there, somewhere.

A cold breeze struck my face as I stood in awe. The view was amazing. There I see a valley and a gushing creek. The green hills are beaming in the sun. The trees are standing tall and large. The cows are lowing as they wake up to the warm and crisp morning. In the distance are moving brown specks. They are kangaroos. The birds are chirping. It brings joy to the heart. The mist signals a beautiful day ahead.- Thomas

Do you love the garden? Read on...

Are you someone who is happy to potter in the garden. Can you spare an hour from time to time to pull a few cheeky weeds that pop up in our front garden bed near the school office? If you can, please let Deb know.

On another gardening note.... Fire wood!

We will shortly be having a tree removed from our grounds.  If you have a trailer and the need for fire wood, please contact the office to discuss this opportunity for free wood.

SMART WATCHES

Please be aware the distraction smart watches and i-watches can cause. We find children are distracted with flashing images. Parents are encouraged to request their children leave these at home. If a child does wear a smart watch to school, it must be de-activated so the child is not receiving or sending messages etc... We will request children to leave their watch at the office in the morning and collect it at the end of the day. Many thanks for your attention and consideration of this.

Safety when riding scooters and bikes to and from school

Children are vulnerable to head injuries and should wear a standard approved bicycle helmet whenever they ride a bike or scooter.

In Victoria, children under the age of 12 may ride on footpaths. They are required to give way to pedestrians and to wheel their bicycles over pedestrian and children’s crossings.

Children aged 12 years or older are required by law to ride on the road.

For the safety of our children riding to and from school,
ensure that they wear an approved bicycle helmet.

LOST PROPERTY:

Please check the lost property cupboard in the office foyer if you are missing uniform or food containers.

Term 2 and 3 WINTER UNIFORMS:

Winter uniform -  As the months get cooler, please make sure your child has his/her school jumper EVERY day. Rain jackets should not be worn in place of a school jumper and are for outside use only.

CHILDREN ARRIVING AFTER THE BELL OR LEAVING EARLY:

As part of our wellbeing care of children at St Luke's, every class engages in a morning routine at 8.50 am.  This quiet, calm time allows children to gather together in a circle, to greet each other by name, to pray and/or enter into some Christian meditation and get ready for the day.  Please make sure you allow enough time to get your child to school BEFORE 8.50 am.

If children arrive after the gate and student entry doors are locked, parents/carers are required to walk their child/ren to the school office and sign them in on the VPass iPad.

If leaving early (before the end of the day), parents/carers are required to sign their child/ren out on the VPASS iPad.

FOOD ALLERGIES:

Allergic reactions to food… can be harmful to our children. For that reason we ask parents to think carefully about what they are packing in their child’s lunch boxes. Occasionally, something might slip through and once aware, we take precautions to ensure the safety of every child. As stated in the Family Handbook 2024:

We are an EGG and NUT free school due to the allergies of children within our community.  We ask that parents respect this request and the potential harm this could do to children if brought to school.

Thank you for your care and attention to this.
