Drummoyne Public School

Term 1 Week 10 Newsletter - Friday 4 April 2025

FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK

Dear Drummoyne PS Community,

AFL Paul Kelly Cup Success

Congratulations to all our Stage 2 and 3 students who represented Drummoyne PS at the AFL Paul Kelly Cup on Thursday. I was pleased to get out of my office and watch a few games and  it was wonderful to see their teamwork, sportsmanship and enthusiasm on display throughout the day. It was clear that all the early morning training sessions had paid off, with some great results on the field. A special shout-out to our senior girls’ team who went through the day undefeated and have now progressed to the regional competition — an outstanding achievement!

A big Thank you to Ms Amanda Champion for her tireless effort, organisation and commitment to preparing and training our teams, and to Ms Carolyn Allport for her support on the day.

Autism Awareness Day

Wednesday 2nd April was World Autism Awareness Day - a day to celebrate neurodiversity, promote understanding and reflect on the importance of creating inclusive environments for all.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition that affects how a person thinks, feels, interacts with others and experiences their environment. In Australia, it's estimated that 1 in 70 people are on the autism spectrum, with boys four times more likely to be diagnosed than girls. Early diagnosis is crucial in supporting children with autism to develop essential skills, particularly in communication and social interaction. Many primary school-aged children with ASD face challenges in these areas, as well as experiencing sensory sensitivities that may make certain environments overwhelming.

Students with ASD also often demonstrate exceptional strengths in specific areas, such as mathematics, art, technology and memory. These strengths can be a valuable asset in the classroom and more generally throughout life.

At Drummoyne PS, our Stage 2 students are currently exploring the novel 'The Thing About Oliver' as part of their English unit. This story has provided a valuable opportunity for students to engage in meaningful discussions about ASD and to develop empathy for neurodiverse students. Our teachers have expertly contextualised this learning to help our students better understand the experiences of those with ASD, recognise their unique strengths and reinforce the importance of inclusion in our school community.

We are proud to be part of an inclusive public school system and community where every student, including those with ASD, is valued for their individuality and supported to succeed and thrive.

Regards,

John Nguyen

THIS WEEK AT DPS

CAPA

Students in K-2 have thoroughly enjoyed exploring percussion instruments this term - learning how to play them, discovering their cultural origins, and using French rhythms to compose their own pieces.

Next week, they’ll proudly showcase the original compositions they’ve been creating and rehearsing in class. It’s sure to be a joyful and memorable week of performances!

DPS Student Government 2025

Oliver Bernia (Prefect)

SRC has recently made a change from SRC to Student Government, this is so that more students can be involved and have a voice for our school.  On Friday February 25th all the prefects and I had a thing called ‘student government training’. The purpose of this training day was to teach everyone necessary skills to be a leader, which consisted of listening, group work and communication as well as many others. That day all the prefects and I were put into groups with two prefects and a bunch of student government representatives. Before the student government arrived we had to prepare. I was working with Maeve and together we had to set up a marshmallow-tower activity to teach students communication and working as a team. That day was an amazing experience but also quite a stressful one. It was hard to make sure everyone was on track and doing what they were supposed to, but in the end everyone listened and worked really well together.

Now every fortnight on a Thursday, student government representatives and the prefects all meet together in the 3/4R classroom where we and Mr Roche, Ms Davis discuss ways we can make our school a better place.

On the odd weeks a group of prefects meet Mr Ngyuen and discuss what we have been talking about during our student government meetings. Lastly, the thing I have enjoyed most and am looking forward to is making our school a more comfortable and safer learning place and environment.

Claire Lindquist (Student Government)

On Thursday every fortnight, the student government has been meeting together in the 3/4R classroom. The first meeting we had was a training session where we got to interact in fun activities like making marshmallow and spaghetti towers and stacking cups with string, which taught us group work and communication skills. My prefect leaders were Elizabeth and Jake who guided our learning and got our ideas flowing. The training day also gave us an insight to who we'll be working with for the rest of the year and gave us the opportunity to meet the prefect leaders.

In our meetings, Mr Roche and Ms Davis help direct the student government group. I look forward to making the school a fun and better place this year.

ALL THINGS SPORTY

Paul Kelly Cup

Yesterday approximately 50 students from Stage 2 and 3 attended an AFL Gala Day called the Paul Kelly Cup. The students played brilliantly! It was a highlight for me to watch players improve throughout the day and gain so much confidence - especially children who had never played before and wanted to try something new.

Thank you to our ex-student, Xavi M, who met us at the oval and supported the Senior Boys Team. The day was part of his community hours he needs as part of his Yr 7 education.

Stage 2 had a great day of skills and drills - with a couple of modified games at the end of the day. Mrs Allport said that fun was had by all and she too saw an outstanding effort from all of the boys and girls.

And last (but certainly not least) a HUGE CONGRATULATIONS to our Senior Girls Team who won the Grand Final. They will be off to the Regional Carnival in the near future.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

OFFICE NEWS

Important information if your child travels to school by bus?

From 24 February to 21 March 2025 Transport for NSW will be focusing on school student Opal tap data to help plan better bus services. It’s vital that your child remembers to tap on and tap off their Student or Child/Youth Opal card during this time – and every time they travel by bus.

Why is tapping on and off on the bus important? The use of Opal cards is the primary way bus operators and Transport for NSW analyse demand for bus services. When students don’t use their Opal cards, their trip is not recorded. Therefore, buses may appear underutilised. Tapping on and off provides better data to plan better bus services.

How can you help? Please remind your child to tap on and off and ensure your child has a valid Opal card (either a School or Child/Youth Opal card) and remind them to tap on and tap off on every trip.

To apply for a school Opal card, visit https://transportnsw.info/school-travel-apply.  Students may see onboard bus posters and Busways Community Relation Officers at afternoon loadings.  Together let’s get students into good habits of tapping on and tapping off with their Opal card.

P&C ANNOUNCEMENTS

Introducing new members of our P&C Executive - Welcome!

Ashlea Dogulin, Secretary

I’ve had the privilege of calling Drummoyne home for over 25 years, and it holds a special place in my heart. Having attended Drummoyne Public School myself, it was the only natural choice for my son to follow in my footsteps. Being an active part of the school community is important to me, as I seek to support both the school and my children in every way I can. I look forward to watching my children grow, thrive, and create their own memories at this wonderful school, just as I did.

Christine Gunn, Vice President Canteen

We have lived in Drummoyne for about 3 years, our little girl has started in Kindy this year, and we love the wholesome and friendly community that has been our intro to DPS. I work part time at a children's art studio nearby, drawing and painting in my spare time.

James Song, Vice treasurer

Hello from the Song Family! We’re new to the neighborhood, having spent nearly a decade living across the bay in Lilyfield.

We have two kids—Ethan (in class 3/4C) and Sienna (in Class KK)—who are already settling into the school well.

Karen and I are excited to be part of such a great school community, and we look forward to meeting other families soon.

DPS Spring Fete 2025 – Get Involved!

We’re excited to announce the Drummoyne Public School 2025 Spring Fete will be held on Sunday 31 August 2025!

It’s set to be a fun-filled day that brings our community together, showcases local talent, welcomes new families to the school, and raises vital funds to support school programs – it’s the biggest P&C fundraiser of the year.

To make it all happen, we need your help! Join us at our next Fete Committee Meeting to get involved and be part of the team bringing it to life.

📅 When: Tuesday 8 April, 7:30pm

📍 Where: Drummoyne Sailing Club

We’re especially looking for volunteers to help with logistics and to coordinate key stalls like the Dunk Tank, Silent Auction, and more. No experience necessary – just bring your enthusiasm!

Let’s make this the best fete yet!
