Dear Drummoyne PS Community,
AFL Paul Kelly Cup Success
Congratulations to all our Stage 2 and 3 students who represented Drummoyne PS at the AFL Paul Kelly Cup on Thursday. I was pleased to get out of my office and watch a few games and it was wonderful to see their teamwork, sportsmanship and enthusiasm on display throughout the day. It was clear that all the early morning training sessions had paid off, with some great results on the field. A special shout-out to our senior girls’ team who went through the day undefeated and have now progressed to the regional competition — an outstanding achievement!
A big Thank you to Ms Amanda Champion for her tireless effort, organisation and commitment to preparing and training our teams, and to Ms Carolyn Allport for her support on the day.
Autism Awareness Day
Wednesday 2nd April was World Autism Awareness Day - a day to celebrate neurodiversity, promote understanding and reflect on the importance of creating inclusive environments for all.
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition that affects how a person thinks, feels, interacts with others and experiences their environment. In Australia, it's estimated that 1 in 70 people are on the autism spectrum, with boys four times more likely to be diagnosed than girls. Early diagnosis is crucial in supporting children with autism to develop essential skills, particularly in communication and social interaction. Many primary school-aged children with ASD face challenges in these areas, as well as experiencing sensory sensitivities that may make certain environments overwhelming.
Students with ASD also often demonstrate exceptional strengths in specific areas, such as mathematics, art, technology and memory. These strengths can be a valuable asset in the classroom and more generally throughout life.
At Drummoyne PS, our Stage 2 students are currently exploring the novel 'The Thing About Oliver' as part of their English unit. This story has provided a valuable opportunity for students to engage in meaningful discussions about ASD and to develop empathy for neurodiverse students. Our teachers have expertly contextualised this learning to help our students better understand the experiences of those with ASD, recognise their unique strengths and reinforce the importance of inclusion in our school community.
We are proud to be part of an inclusive public school system and community where every student, including those with ASD, is valued for their individuality and supported to succeed and thrive.
Regards,
