From the Principal

During Week 3 this term we held a wonderful Education Week Open Day. I would like to thank the teachers for their hard work coordinating this event, Miss Pip and the SLSOs for the lovely morning tea, the students for such a beautiful assembly performance and the family members who came along to support us. It was a wonderful community event. Next week we will once again be opening our school to families as part of our Book Week celebrations. Further information follows below.

In coming weeks we will be sending groups of students along to two special events in our network of schools. Next Wednesday our school leaders will be attending a Student Leadership Day at Burnside Public School. Later this term our primary aged Aboriginal students will be attending the Carlingford Network Big Mob Day. This is a wonderful opportunity and I wish them the best of luck as they represent our school with pride.

Child Safety

I would like to make parents and carers aware of some important child safety resources that are available online. Many of our students have access to Ipads and devices at home to use for study and leisure. It is important to monitor your child's use of devices by ensuring you have appropriate parental controls in place. The eSafety Commissioner website has advice for parents and carers to help kids stay safe online.

The NSW Police Legacy has just released an updated version of the Child Safety Handbook. The handbook aims to raise awareness about risks to children and steps that can be taken to protect and keep them safe.

Dogs on school grounds

A reminder to the school community that dogs and other pets are prohibited on school grounds unless permission has been granted by the principal for a particular educational purpose or to support a person with a disability. If you have pets with you at school pick up time, please ensure they are on a leash, under control and outside of the school gates.

Attendance Update

It is extremely pleasing to report an improvement in attendance at Telopea Public School so far this term. We now have a large majority of students reaching the minimum standard expected and many more on track this term to reach a 95% or higher attendance rate. As I mentioned at Open Day, I am very exited to see the flow on effect of good, sustained attendance on academic and social outcomes for our students. In coming days I will provide families with an update on their child's attendance rate so far this term. Please make an appointment with the class teacher if you need support in reaching the minimum expected standard.

We will be celebrating reaching our half term target on Friday this week with a whole school ice cream party. Keep it up Telopea!

Telopea Clubs

This term we have launched the Telopea Clubs Program aimed to improve connectedness and engagement at school. Students from Kindergarten to Year 6 are working in small groups with a teacher or SLSO to discuss issues that matter to them at school, make new friends and participate in a special interest activity. This program is proving to be a great success with the students and teachers very much looking forward to it each week. We will continue with this program until Week 8.

Jeans for Genes Day

Well done to all of Telopea for supporting Jeans for Genes Day on Friday, 4th August. There was a terrific sea of denim, showing our enthusiasm for assisting children who are affected by  birth defects or genetic diseases. With our gold coin donations, we raised a total of $142.40; which works out to be more than a dollar per child in the school- fantastic effort.  The proceeds will be sent to the scientists at Children's Medical Research Institute as they endeavour to find cures and allowing these children to just be kids.

Musica Viva Incursion

On Wednesday, August 2nd, the students of Telopea were treated to a beautiful display of music thanks to our Musical Viva Incursion. Oboist Celina Craig, and guitarist Caspar Hawksley, took the children on a journey through colour and mood with their showcase, Colours of Home- Painting with Sound. The children were absolutely enthralled as these talented musicians used their instruments to tell stories and teach them about pitch, rhythm and pace. The performance reached its peak at the end, when the students helped spin a colour wheel and make decisions about what sort of mood each colour depicted. From there the musicians created pieces to display those emotions for the students' listening pleasure.

Life Education - Healthy Harold Incursion

Last week the Life  Education Van visited  Telopea Public School. Each class took part in various programs linked to the PDHPE syllabus.

Kindergarten and Year 1 students actively engaged in discussions and participated in activities about how to build friendships and care for others. Year 2 explored health messages and people in our network who can help us. Whilst Year 3/4 focused on friends and feelings. They explored a range of emotions and what they mean and the various ways they are communicated. Year 5/6 students investigated the importance of respectful relationships for wellbeing.

What's Happening in Kindy Koalas

Last Monday 7th August, children in Kindergarten reached a once in a lifetime milestone - their 100th day of school! On this very special day they participated in many different and fun learning activities that related to the number 100.

Students were asked to come to school dressed like they were 100 years old. Costumes included white hair, glasses, wrinkles, walking sticks etc. The students did not disappoint, with so many amazing old costumes. They looked fantastic!

During the day students completed 100 day booklets, counted to 100, made 100 gumballs with their fingerprints and also made fairy bread with 100's and 1000's.

Congratulations on your 100 days Kindergarten!

Important Reminders

COLLECTING STUDENTS FROM SCHOOL

A reminder that if you have made arrangements for someone to collect your child/ren that is outside of your normal arrangements, please ensure that you have notified the office so we are aware and can let other staff members know in a timely manner.  This applies to leaving early and for the end of the day.

SAFETY

A reminder to all students and parents that entry to the School is via the Pedestrian gate on Chestnut Ave located near Block D. This is for everyone's safety. If you require disabled access there are two entry points into the school via the ramp into the school office and via the gate on the corner of Sturt and Manson Streets.

NOTES SENT HOME

On occasion important notes will be sent home. Please ensure you remember to check your child's bag each day.

CELEBRATIONS

Here at TPS we enjoy celebrating student’s birthdays. You are most welcome to bring in something to celebrate but we ask that individual store bought small bite size cupcakes or individually wrapped sweets are brought in to school as this makes it easier for the students to eat. A large cake makes it difficult to distribute to their classmates.

LOST PROPERTY

There are a number of items in the Lost Property box which do not have names on them. If your child is missing an item, please check this box which is located in the D Block breezeway.

CONTACT INFORMATION OR CIRCUMSTANCE CHANGE

Please ensure that your contact details are up to date. It is important that the School be able to contact you in case of your child being ill, a child not being collected from school or in case of emergency etc. If your family circumstances change, please also provide the school with any updated documentation.

You can notify the school of any changes or updates via written confirmation or complete the template form located in the office foyer.

MOBILE PHONES OR DEVICES

If you require your child to carry a mobile phone/device, you will be required to complete a permission note (please see the school office if you require this note). Student mobile phones/device are to be turned off and handed to the school office during school hours in the morning. Mobile phones/devices will be returned to the students at the end of each day.

Uniform Shop

Uniforms can be purchased from the uniform shop every Wednesday between 8.45-11.00am. We thank you in advance for your patience during these busy times.

We are pleased to advise we now have the option of Eftpos for purchases. Alternatively cash is still accepted, the correct change is much appreciated. A current price list is located in the office foyer.

HANDY HINT: Ensure that you label all items of clothing (including hats) for your child/ren, this makes it easier to return lost items.

Schools as a Community Centre

Hi TPS and Telopea SaCC communities,

Recently we celebrated Education Week together during TPS Open Day. The school was a buzz of activity with so many families sharing the event with staff and students at assembly, in the classroom and enjoying a picnic morning tea.

THANK YOU to our community for joining us and making this event such a success.

BREAKFAST CLUB (BC)

Breakfast is served FREE to TPS students every Monday and Thursday morning 8:30-9:00am. Recently hot baked beans and spaghetti have been added to the menu and are proving to be very popular. This Thursday hot porridge will also be offered along with the usual  jam/vegemite toast, and to drink Up and Go, milk and water.

BC is the perfect opportunity for your child/children to settle into the school day. Students enjoy sharing breakfast with their peers and positive social interactions are developed across all year groups. The program also provides opportunities for students to assist/help out and take on leadership roles. The program can assist a smooth transition to school for students who may find separating a little tricky.

Many families find transitioning children from home to school a tricky process. Separation anxiety is a normal part of development....by creating a routine the stress of separation anxiety for parents and children can be eased. BC can be the perfect bridge to assist your child's smooth transition....by working together we can help your child to separate happily. If you would like help with your child's transition please feel free to contact me to discuss how BC and other SaCC initiatives can help.

CLUBS: Art and Craft Lucky Dip with Pip

It has been a pleasure being involved with this school initiative. Since the start of Clubs I am feeling connected with the students and school....and I've witnessed some positive benefits for the students. So far our Club has enjoyed rock painting....to share our activity some rock artworks were hidden around the school equipment to be found, returned to the student painter and swapped for a lucky dip prize. We have also planted sunflower seeds. We'll be planting the seedlings around the school grounds so hopefully we'll all be enjoying smiley sunflower blooms soon. We've created air drying clay birds and in coming weeks we'll be making a tie dye library bag.

Recently the SaCC Project coordinated a first aid course in collaboration with Kidsaver First Aid. Participants attended the two week program and after completing an assessment were presented with first aid certificates.  CONGRATULATIONS to the newly certified first aiders.

SUPPORTED PLAYGROUP Friday 10:00-12:00

If you have children under five you are welcome join our playgroup. Preschoolers learn through play, and we have lots of fun ...painting, using glue, moulding playdough, gardening, building with blocks, learning to share and take turns, exploring math concepts, pre-reading and pre-writing skills and developing social skills. Playgroup is also an excellent place to meet other TPS parents.

SING, RHYME and STORYTIME every Tuesday 9:45-11:00

During SRST we read, sing, listen, dance, explore poetry and rhyming. We borrow books from the SaCC library and share morning tea time together. Under five year olds and parents/carers are always welcome to join   :-)

The SaCC Project is open and I am onsite every day. Please feel free to contact me via email, phone or drop in.
