Principal's Report

Hi all,

A big thank you to everyone for responding to the emergency text messages that went out yesterday. They form a huge and vital part of our emergency management plan. In the event of a relocation or other emergency management action we will be using these text messages to contact you with the relevant information. If you did not receive communications from us yesterday via text message can you please make time to see myself or Amy at the front office and we will update our list.

On days where the Local Government Area (LGA) for the Macedon Ranges is Extreme or Catastrophic Mount Macedon PS will close and relocate all staff and students to Romsey PS. We receive notification of our fire rating directly from the Department of Education (DET) and this is why it can be different to the risk rating for our own Central Fire District. You will receive a text message from us in the event our LGA is Extreme or Catastrophic.

Last Friday saw our Swimming Carnival run with great success! A huge thank you to all the parents and helpers that made the day run smoothly, we also must thank Mrs. Stone for all of her hard work behind the scenes in getting the event prepared.

Yesterday the Grade 6 students travelled to Melbourne with Mrs Glenister and Olivia to attend the GRIP Leadership Summit. It was a great day where our students were able to workshop and learn from a range of experts on how to demonstrate good leadership qualities.

We will be holding our annual Meet the teacher interviews next Monday and Tuesday. This is a great opportunity to spend 10 minutes with your child’s teacher to discuss some of the things that might be helpful for them to know about your child.  Please contact your child’s teacher via Seesaw to organise a time to catch up, they will get back to you from Wednesday with your interview time.

This Friday Friends of the School (FOS) will be holding our Welcome BBQ! This is a wonderful chance for all members of the MMPS community to come and share a wonderful afternoon together. FOS will be holding a free BBQ, all you need to bring is your own picnic snacks and drinks. It is an afternoon for parents and friends all across the school.

Last Wednesday night we held our first FOS Meeting here at school. It was great to see some new faces attend! We are always on the look out for new people to join FOS and with this year being a Fete year there has never been a better time to join! FOS will be present at the BBQ on Friday so if you would be interested in supporting FOS in any way please come and see us there.

A little reminder at the beginning of Term on a few things. It is important to remember that the school doors open at 8:45AM and this is when supervision is provided by the school. Students should not be dropped and left at school any earlier than this. We also need to be vigilant in making sure we remain safe at pick up and drop off times. There are a number of vehicles not adhering to parking signs and speed limits. Can we please make a concerted effort to make sure we are as safe as we can be at these busy times.

I end our Principal’s report this week with some sad news, Yvonne “Meg” Whelan passed away on the 3rd of February. Meg was principal at Mount Macedon Primary School from 1985-1989

Meg was proud of her time at Mount Macedon as she helped set up the school after Ash Wednesday

Her Funeral will be graveside at the Macedon Cemetery on Friday the 16th at 11am.

Many thanks, Joe.

House Swimming Carnival

We had our House Swimming Carnival last Friday and what a wonderful day it was!

From the weather, to the students outstanding efforts in the pool & the encouraging voices of the students out of the pool, I couldn’t be more thrilled with how the day went.

The students braved the temperature of the water, which was no easy feat, and took on their chosen events with confidence and tenacity.

The day could not go ahead without the great support of the parents on the day, and of course our amazing staff. I would like to take this opportunity to thank our amazing parents for all their help on the day. This allowed the day to run smoothly, thank you again!

Well done to all our swimmers and good luck to the selected students moving on to districts on the 28th of February.

From the very proud P.E teacher,

Jess Stone

This week in DigiTech

As the temperature was getting close to 30 degrees today, I did the most logical thing, make the young people run outside!

Well, I did have a reason (other than it being funny to see Preps fall over) we were looking at Momentum (and robots!)

Momentum can be defined as "mass in motion." All objects have mass; so if an object is moving, then it has momentum - it has its mass in motion. The amount of momentum that an object has is dependent upon two variables: how much stuff is moving and how fast the stuff is moving and what better way to see that than by doing it ourselves (we were the stuff in this instance).

After we learned about that, it was time for the fun part - Robots!

The students learned how to control our Sphero robots through a series of challenges, and what did we discover? (other than it's always fun when robots crash into each other?) that yes, momentum is real, and using the gyroscopes built into our robots, we were able to graph and see this data - the faster they went, the longer they took to slow down - it was all fascinating stuff (well, I liked the graphs, the Preps mostly liked the crashing)

You can see some of said 'crash excitement' in the images below.
