From the Leadership Team

STAFFING UPDATE

As we move into the last half of the year there are a few staffing changes across the school. As you are aware, Sarah Bradbury has taken up a Team Leader position within the Department for Education for the remainder of this year, returning in 2024. This has created a domino effect. Congratulations to Matt Simmons who has won the deputy principal role: Inclusive Curriculum and Pedagogy, Fiona Brown who is now Senior Leader; Operations and Culture and Natalie Sarris who will be acting as Student Wellbeing Leader. Olivia Sutton, who is well known to the students in A5, will take over from Natalie from Monday.

AUTHENTIC LEARNING

Authentic Learning is an approach to education that focuses on providing students with real-world, meaningful experiences that prepare them for life beyond the school gates. Why does Reynella Primary school place so much value on authentic learning? Below are some of the key principles of authentic learning that drive us to prioritise authenticity in our classrooms.

Relevance: Authentic learning connects classroom lessons to real-life situations, making the content more relevant and meaningful for students. When students can see the practical applications of what they are learning, they are more engaged and motivated to learn.

Higher Order Thinking Skills: Authentic learning often requires critical thinking, problem-solving, and decision-making. It encourages students to analyse information, synthesize ideas, and apply their knowledge to solve complex problems.

Motivation and Engagement: Engaging students in hands-on, real-world tasks taps into their natural curiosity and intrinsic motivation. This can lead to increased engagement and a deeper level of involvement in the learning process.

Application of Knowledge: Authentic learning encourages students to transfer their knowledge from one context to another. When students encounter similar situations outside the classroom, they can apply the skills and concepts they've learned to navigate those situations effectively.

Collaboration and Communication: Many authentic learning tasks involve collaboration with peers, mirroring the collaborative nature of many real-world scenarios. This helps students develop teamwork, communication, and interpersonal skills.

Long-Term Retention: Because authentic learning experiences are often memorable and personally meaningful, the knowledge and skills gained through these experiences tend to be retained for a longer period of time.

Cultural and Global Understanding: Authentic learning can involve exploring diverse perspectives and real-world issues, promoting cultural awareness and a broader understanding of global challenges.

Preparation for the Future: In an increasingly complex and interconnected world, students need skills that go beyond memorization and regurgitation of facts. Authentic learning equips students with the skills they'll need to thrive in a dynamic and rapidly changing society.

Emotional and Social Development: Authentic learning experiences can evoke emotions and empathy, helping students develop emotional intelligence and a sense of social responsibility.

Lifelong Learning: By engaging in authentic learning experiences, students develop a positive attitude toward learning and become more inclined to seek out learning opportunities throughout their lives.

Each year, our students exemplify authentic learning through our whole-school STEM inquiry. This year, students are exploring the many facets of ‘liveability’ through rich, project-based learning. As always, we are seeing students forming a deeper connection to their curriculum and truly taking hold of their own learning experience. It’s how we believe learning should look.

We can’t wait to showcase this journey once again on Thursday 21 September. Don’t miss it!

What makes a place ‘liveable’?

Innovators around the world are constantly finding new ways to improve the way we live. A place might be considered more ‘liveable’ if it can provide people with high quality health care, education, infrastructure, stability, culture and environment.

This year, students have been challenged to improve the ‘liveability’ of a place, following our Reynella Solution Cycle (below). We can't wait to showcase our critical and creative thinking with the community on Thursday 21 September

Learning with F5

This year F5 have explored images in our lives and learnt how to use photoshop and AI to manipulate images. The first thing we learnt how to do was take an animal and put it in an environment it doesn't belong, as you can see below. We investigated what types of things magazine covers have and found a lot that focussed on reinforcing negative things in society. So, we used our STEM and photoshop skills to create our own positive magazine covers which celebrated character strengths, growth mindset and our personalities. Please enjoy.

Learning with B2

Hello CU families,

Important diary dates.

This Sunday 27 August between 3 - 6pm in the library, Fiona and Amy will be able to assist with uploading to the portal and passport stamps.

Reynella Primary School’s allocated graduation date is Tuesday, 7th November 2023.  Graduates arrive at Bonython Hall by 5.15pm in readiness for the ceremony to commence sharply at 6:00pm and conclude by approximately 7:30pm.  More details will be sent closer to the date.

Hours must be finalised by the last week of term 3 (25-29th September).  Amy Sheppard and I will be hosting a Sunday session where families can come to school and we can help with uploading hours to the portal.

Please look out for an email from me regarding how to make the most of the school holidays to accumulate hours and the different review forms that are needed.

I will be available every Monday afternoon after school in the library for students to bring their passports, review forms and learning evidence for me to assess.

As always, please reach out if you have any questions.

Cheers, Fiona

Wellbeing

Last Friday was the National Day against Violence and Bullying. This year’s theme was Growing Connections. As this is an important day, we decided to focus on the issue of bullying for the second half of term 2. The Student Wellbeing Action Team asked classes to complete a mind map around what the word ‘connection’ means to them.

The responses were really interesting, ranging from ‘things that stick together’ to ‘hope and kindness’ and ‘belonging’.  Students wrote that positive connections build self esteem and negative connections are harmful.  Reponses identified that connections are formed around common interests, understandings and respect.

Our Reception to year 2 students learnt about connections and were able to recognise the connections they have in their lives. Year 3-6 classes built on this; growing their understanding that developing positive connections can lead to bullying prevention.

The Student Wellbeing Action Team have put a challenge to all classes to design a class cape to show their commitment to not only bully prevention but the growing of connections and positive self-talk.

I have worked with the R-2 classes, sharing a text called ‘Stop Picking On Me’ which explores the difficult issue of bullying and how to manage the fears, worries and questions around this.   I have worked with the classes to design their cape which have the focus of positive self-talk and caring along with anti-bullying messages.  Students will present their capes at the week 6 assembly.

The Student Wellbeing Action Team are running a competition for students to develop a #wearereynella handshake.  The idea behind this is a shared handshake builds and strengthen connections and can help all staff and student feel connected to our amazing school.

Lastly, on August 4, both staff and students came together to show their appreciation to Michele Russell on the occasion of Primary Principals Day. We celebrated the vision and hard work that Michele has dedicated to making Reynella a remarkable place to work and learn.

Next week we are looking forward to celebrating our fantastic SSO team.

Have a wonderful weekend,

Cheers, Fiona

Can you help?

Volunteers Needed

Our canteen staff would love to speak to any parents or grandparents who would like to consider volunteering in 2023.

Jillian (Canteen Manager) is happy to answer any questions you might have and discuss options for days and times you are available to volunteer.

They are very flexible with times: if you can only volunteer for 1 day a fortnight or month, that would be a big help to assist our staff to prepare food for our hungry students.

Basketball Fundraisers

We have 10 teams with 68 students representing Reynella Primary School in after school basketball this year. We play in the Metro Southern Basketball League against other schools in our area.

As a community organisation we need a few fundraisers each year to help support our teams and maintain a strong program, whilst encouraging kids to participate in team sports and keep active. This year we have organised a Wine Fundraiser and later this year we will run a Car Wash at the school.

If you like good South Australian wine and Gin at a reduced price this fundraiser is for you!

Use the link below and help us and the kids this year. Please share with friends and family, anyone can purchase, they don't need to be a Reynella PS family.

https://www.behindthedoorwines.com.au/reynella-ps.html

NB. The school cannot accept payments for the wine fundraiser, all orders and payments must be through Behind the Door Wines. The school will just be the pick up point for orders.

We would really love your support!
