Principal's Message

Dear Community

Welcome back for Term 4. The next two months will be particularly busy as we navigate the usual end of year events such as swimming lessons, graduations and end of year events as well as the completion of and move into our new teaching and learning block.!

Over the break things have been ticking along quite quickly in regards to the capital works project. All the furniture and playground equipment has been ordered and designs drawn up for the nature based play area behind the new block.

Staff have started doing walk throughs to help with planning for the actual move and for the setting up of our 2024 classes.

Here is a longer term snapshot of the status of the project:

  • Current status of program indicates that Practical Completion will be achieved by 19/01/2023 after testing and commissioning. (This is basically 'handover'). The building itself should be complete mid-December, which is when final electrical connections and safety check will commence.
  • Packing up existing classrooms and empty transportable buildings will largely be undertaken between 13-15 December which will hopefully all be student free days (Wednesday 13 December still awaiting Department approval).
  • All 5x transportable buildings and 4 storage spaces will be scheduled to be removed from Tuesday 19/12/2023.
  • Stage two of the project, including the new carpark, gardener's shed and Room 9 modifications, will largely take place over the summer break once the transportable buildings have been removed. This stage is currently due for completion on 16/2/24.

Swimming Lessons

In-term swimming will commence on Monday, 23 October and run each school day for two weeks. The final lesson will be on Friday, 3 November 2023. Students will get changed at school before and after lessons. Travel to and from the pool will be by bus.

Swimming is a part of our school curriculum and all students are expected to attend.

The cost for the 10 lessons is $38.00 per student. We are very grateful to the P&C who have been able to subsidise the cost of the bus again this year, due to funds raised through voluntary contributions and fundraising opportunities. If you need to discuss payment options or you require a payment extension, please see Robyn Smith at the office.

Items to bring each day:

  • Towel
  •  Thongs or sandals (to wear to and from the pool)
  • A labelled plastic bag (for wet bathers and towel)
  • Underwear
  • Warm jumper to wear on the bus
  • Goggles - optional but recommended
  • Rash vests are recommended

Special considerations:

  • Please make sure all items of clothing and goggles are clearly labelled with your child's name.
  • Students are to wear their normal uniform to school. They may wear bathers underneath, but will also be given time to change before going to the pool
  • Long hair must be tied back.

End of Year Events

Unfortunately, due to our current lack of space and facilities, we are unable to hold our traditional end of year concerts this year. However, in lieu of this, each class will hold their own individual event where parents will be invited to attend a class performance or activity session where end of year awards will be presented. These classroom events will be held across the last two weeks of school, and more information around specific timing and format will be sent out by class teachers next week.

On a final note, recent world events have led to some concerns regarding distressing online content finding its way onto student screens and devices.

It’s normal for staff, parents and carers to be concerned about what our children may see, so during this time we recognise that keeping families free from harm on the internet is very important.

The eSafety Commissioner provides some important guidelines and resources to help ensure that online spaces stay safe for everyone.

As always, if you have any queries, please do not hesitate to call, or email me on Sarah.Dawson@education.wa.edu.au

Voluntary Contributions

A big thank you to all families who have already paid their contributions. Your family’s contribution will go directly towards the purchase of resources and consumables needed in the provision of learning program activities.

P&C News

Hello SPS families!

Welcome to the final term for 2023! We held our first meeting for the term on Tuesday night, which had us planning for the rest of the year and into 2024.

We are holding a planning afternoon for 2024 on Sunday 26 November at 3:00 pm at Beecroft Park, City Beach. It would be lovely to see some new faces and hear some fresh ideas! If you are unable to make it but have some suggestions, don’t hesitate in emailing us on the details below. Kids are welcome!

Referendum Sausage Sizzle and Bake Sale

Thank you to everyone who contributed to a successful morning last Saturday! From the volunteers cooking sausages or selling cakes, to the donations of baked goods and the people who supported our P&C by buying something from our stall, we are so grateful. It was wonderful to see some new faces volunteering and we were able to raise over $2000! A huge thank you also goes to Coles Scarborough for providing a discounted rate for the supplies needed.

Grill’d Local Matters

Thank you to everyone who used their token to vote for Scarborough Primary School P&C in September at Grill’d Scarborough. We were the organisation with the most tokens, which means we will be getting a $300 donation from Grill’d in the coming weeks!

NEXT MEETING

Our next General Meeting will be held Tuesday 21 November, 2023 at 6:30 pm in the school library. It is a great opportunity to find out what is happening, make suggestions and get an update on the progress of the new build. All welcome, we would love to see you there.

If you would like to be added to our mailing list to receive the agenda and minutes for our meetings, or have a suggestion, send us an email - scarboroughprimarypc@gmail.com.

UNIFORM SHOP

The Uniform Shop is open on Wednesday mornings 8:45 am to 9:15 am in Room 8. We are well stocked, with an excess of hats if you need a spare! We are planning to hold another second hand sale towards the end of the term. If you have any unwanted items, please donate them to the uniform shop on Wednesday mornings, or to the office during school hours.

Order forms can be downloaded from the school website https://scarboroughps.wa.edu.au/p-c/uniforms/

Emailed orders will be delivered to your child’s classroom or left at the office for collection. Please indicate on the form.

CANTEEN

We have been able to set up a canteen volunteer group so Laura, our wonderful Canteen Leader, has a few parents that are trained up and can help once or twice a term. There is always space for more volunteers, so if you would like to help out, please get in contact with Laura or Teneke (Canteen Coordinator).

The time needed to volunteer is Friday mornings between 11:00 am -12:30 pm.

Please also note that all canteen orders need to be placed via QuickCliq prior to 8:30 am on Friday.

ENTERTAINMENT BOOK

We continue to fundraise through the Entertainment Book. When you purchase the Entertainment Book, a portion will go to the P&C.

Order your membership here https://www.entertainment.com.au/orderbooks/86y129

CONTAINERS FOR CHANGE

We will continue to fundraise through the Containers for Change initiative. The Containers for Change bins can be found at the school entry at Hinderwell Street near the Room 9 Heritage Building. Keep on bringing those empty cans and bottles to support the P&C! Please note that we have previously given the wrong scheme ID, so double check next time you’re donating that it is the one above.

THESE BINS ARE NOT FOR RUBBISH BUT FOR ELIGIBLE EMPTY DRINK CONTAINERS ONLY, THANK YOU!

Alternatively, if you wish to donate at a refund point of your choosing you can quote our Scheme ID C10284773. If you prefer to attend a Reverse Vending Machine location, please use the barcode at the top of the P&C news. This may be your preference if you have a larger donation and be rest assured that the money goes back to the P&C.

Wembley Downs District Fair

If you would like to complete a picture for the colouring competition please find the document attached to print and return.
