Reminder about Stranger Awareness

As people are aware, there is heavy traffic of Newmont workforce that pass along the pathways in front of our school. Please take the time to remind your child the importance of stranger awareness, not to engage with adults they do not know and what to do if they are approached by an adult they don’t know. We have also invited Billy Ame, Newmont Supervisor of Operations Security, to provide a short information session with students on stranger awareness next Monday.

2024 Classes

I am currently organising classes for the 2024 school year. If you know your child / children will not be attending Lihir International School in 2024, and you have not yet informed me, please let me know as soon as possible, so that year level numbers and class organisation can be finalised. 2024 classes will be announced in week 10. If Townsite parents have a child that is not yet enrolled for Junior or Senior Kindy for 2025, please make contact with Mrs Exzil for enrolment forms.

At LIS - Wellbeing Matters!

The Australian Student Wellbeing Framework supports schools to provide every student with the strongest foundation possible for them to reach their aspirations in learning and in life.

The vision of the Framework is that schools are learning communities that promote student wellbeing, safety and positive relationships so that students can reach their full potential.

The Framework is based on evidence that demonstrates the strong association between safety, wellbeing and learning.

PAT Tests

Over the next three weeks, students from Prep – year 9 will be completing online ‘PAT’ tests in English and Mathematics. PAT stands for Progressive Achievement Tests.

These tests are conducted in many schools in Australia as well as international schools and are used to track both individual student and year level learning progress. These tests are not used for student reporting but give teachers evidenced-based data about a student’s learning at a given point of time. Staff analyse data from these tests in order to identify future learning needs.

These tests are facilitated through the ACER (Australian Council for Educational Research) website  - www.acer.org/au/pat/progressive-achievement.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact either myself or your child’s teacher.

Curriculum update

Both Australia and Papua New Guinea have released updated versions of their Curriculum documents. Teachers are currently reviewing programs to align with Version 9 of the Australian Curriculum and the PNG Standards-based Curriculum. This process will continue through 2025.

Date Claimer - Primary Student-led Conferences

Primary Student-led Conferences will take place on Wednesday week 6, the 6th November from 3.15-6.00pm. Parents are invited to come along to your child's class and your child will share about some of the learning they are doing in class. This is not a parent/teacher interview however teachers will help students plan their conferences. A conference usually takes 10-15 minutes. Siblings will be supervised in the library.

Friday Assemblies

Parents and friends are welcome to attend our Friday assemblies that commence at 8.10am on the basketball court. This week was the year 1/2 assembly and next week it will be the Prep class.

Kind regards,

Ms Cathy Langusch

Work Ready Program

The 4th and the last batch of Work Ready Program trainees are in their 3rd week of the program. The first of our guest speakers, who is a former WRP trainee and currently working with Newmont – HR, is scheduled to address the trainees Friday.

Next week Friday, we are scheduled to go for a Mine and Process Plant tour and talk. From past experiences, these trips are always filled with fun, excitement and curiosity. During the visits, the trainees learn firsthand information and gain knowledge and understanding of Newmont’s Lihir mine and processing operations.

FODE

Our Grade 10 students successfully completed their National Exams on Thursday this week.  Depending on their final exam results, they can continue to do their Grades 11 and 12 at secondary schools or further upgrade their marks.

Other students are continuing their studies and doing individual work at their own pace with assistance from STM staff.

Kind regards,

Mr. David Wengip
