Term 3 Week 6 - 2023

School News

Break Times Tweaked - from Week 8

The School is making a very minor adjustment to break times from week 8 to the end of term. Currently, our 1st break is 40 minutes in length and our 2nd break is 30 minutes in length. We are reducing 1st break to 35 minutes in length and increasing our 2nd break to 35 minutes in length.

This will equalise each break for the remainder of term.

During this time, the school is trialling a few playground adjustments to determine if this will assist with improving the playground overall. Some of these adjustments are as follows:

  • All students will be able to access any area of the playground, with the exception of Soccer Games.
  • The recent purchases of additional Soccer posts, will allow for more games to be established. These games will be assigned to specific cohorts of groups, to allow for these hectic games to be reduced in size.
  • We will also be trialing different playground activity options.

We will keep our community informed of the progress made and what we find from making these adjustments.

Grow Your Mind In Action

Grow Your Mind is being implemented at Goulburn North Public School. We are currently moving into our third week of this program. Evidence of its impact is beginning to creep into conversations and discussions.

An altercation took place recently and through discussions with the students, one student began discussing how their 'Guard Dog' was heightened and alerted. They felt uncomfortable and that they did not know how to calm their Guard Dog. This is a break through! Students are being provided with a common set of language to work with through these situations. Staff are able to instantly access and support students with workable strategies.

Ask your child about their 'Guard Dog', ask them what causes their guard dog to stir and react, and what strategies they use to calm their 'Guard Dog'.

Grow You Mind Impact Report - 2022

Attached is the Grow Your Mind Impact Report for 2022. Feel free to read more about this amazing program, that is showing signs of impact at our school, after just 3 small weeks of learning. We look forward to what comes next.

This departmental link contains valuable information and  resources to help families stay safe when online. It will help with how to explore websites and engage in games together. How to manage privacy setting on apps and social media and also how to set some rules about online safety basics.

We recommend exploring what is contained on this site, for parents of students in Years 3 to 6.

Progress is occurring in the 'Inappropriate Language' space

The school has continued to keep a focus on 'Inappropriate Language' and we will continue to follow this focus throughout the school term. However, we have discovered a noticeable decrease in incidents being logged revolving around 'Inappropriate Language'. We are still on the journey, but we are beginning to see a noticeable improvement across the school. We would also like to thank our amazing North Community in this regard for your assisting and support with helping our school in this space.

NSW Behaviour Code for Students

Please find attached a copy of the NSW Behaviour Code for Students. Our current focus for the remainder of Term 3 is reducing 'Inappropriate Language' at school. This code outlines student expectation in being respectful to others and speaking courteously.

Nut Free Reminder

We have started to notice that nuts and food containing nuts are beginning to creep into school again. We would like to ask our community to have nut free options for student lunches. We have a number of student at school that have nut allergies and nut intolerances. Whilst we maintain a strict 'no sharing of foods policy' to keep all students safe, some students can have a reaction from a few particles in the air or being in close proximity to students that have nuts. To assist us in keeping all of our community safe, we ask that lunches have nut free alternatives if at all possible.

We thank you in advance.

Volunteer and help us improve Reading across the school

Our amazing friends at "Reading Friends Australia" have started supporting our school. We currently have a number of volunteers supporting our school. We thank those that are now supporting at North.

If you are interested in being involved with this program, our students will end up becoming better readers. If you can donate as little as an hour a week to sit and listen to some student read, we are happy for the support this will bring our students.

Please contact the office and we will connect you with our team of volunteers.

Mental Health Service and Support

The school has had a recent number of students that have been experiencing some difficulty and have required to access the support of CAMHS. The school is currently working with the 'Be You' team to seek additional support and services in this space. We are here to help as best we can, we would ideally like to work proactively with our community. If you would like to discuss anything to do with your children, please reach out and make contact with the school. We are more than happy to provide whatever support we can.

The 'BeYou' Team have provided the following information for places where you can also seek support for yourself or your children.

Calling all Fairies

We have been asked if we have students that would like to participate in the Fairy Festival in later in the year. Students would be able to dress up as a fairy and be apart of the parade during the long weekend. If you are interested in participating in this event, please contact Mrs Nixon.

Curriculum and Instruction

Our K-2 teachers have become experts at implementing the new English and Mathematics syllabuses with their classes this year. Their knowledge of the curriculum will greatly assist our Stage 2 and 3 teachers as we implement the new 3-6 English and Mathematics syllabuses next year.

  • speaking with an appropriate volume for the location,
  •  using manners (please, thank you, excuse me),
  • body language matching the respectful speaking,
  • being present in a conversation,

  • refraining from speaking about others and their business,
  • agreeing to disagree respectfully,
  • turn taking in conversations and class discussions,

NSW Touch Football Gala Day

On Wednesday the 26th of July students in Stage 2 and Stage 3 went to Carr Convoy oval to participate in the NSW Touch Gala Day.

The weather was great and all students showed great sportsmanship.

It was a fun day out where students were able to meet students from other schools and develop friendships.

I want to give a massive thank you to Miss Martin, Mr O'Keefe and Mr Finn for their support on the day. Gala Day's aren't able to happen without support from teaching staff.

Goulburn/Crookwell PSSA District Athletics Carnival

On Friday the 18th of July we had 45 students represent Goulburn North Public School at the Goulburn/Crookwell PSSA Athletics Carnival which was held at Hudson Park.

The day started off beautiful and slowly the weather got cooler, however this did not upset our athletes. All athletes did a fantastic job at representing themselves and the school.

A big congratulations to Billy C, Eli L, Ava A, Trey T, and Mason B for making it to the Zone Athletics Carnival which is held in Canberra on Friday the 1st of September.

I want to give a massive thank you to Miss Martin, Mr Marshall and Mr Finn for their support on the day.

News From Around The School

1L News

Over the last week 1L have been exploring length. The students have used informal units of measurement to estimate and compare the length of two different objects.  We have also been exploring equal parts  such as whole, half and quarters .They were lucky enough to have some students from 5/6 F assist them with a recent problem solving task. They were presented with 6 strips of paper which represented 6 salad rolls which they needed to share equally between 4 people.  This was very challenging but after some discussion and manipulation they were able to determine how they could be  equally share.

Teamwork Makes the Dreamwork

3/4B News

Over the last week 3/4B have been investigating acute, right, and obtuse angles. We identified them in our environment and created an angles art piece. To do this we used washi tape to mark off a piece of paper. We then painted with watercolours. Once dry we removed the washi tape and revealed all the different angles in our painting.

Northern Lights Blue

Northern Lights Blue have welcomed new classmates this term into our learning environment. As a part of our gardening unit this term, students have renovated the garden bed outside of the classroom. Additionally, we celebrated Science Week last week by creating binary bracelets, learning how to build and program Lego robotics, and was involved in distance learning through Zoom to explore artificial intelligence and space exploration.

Students have been creating learning goals and reflecting on literacy and numeracy tasks that takes place. They have also been building resilience and emotional regulation through the Grow Your Mind program that is being implemented schoolwide.
