Drummoyne Public School

Term 4 Week 2 Newsletter - Friday 25 October 2024

FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK

Dear Drummoyne PS Community,

World Teachers’ Day

Today we celebrate World Teachers' Day and I wanted to take a moment to acknowledge the incredible work of our teaching staff here at Drummoyne Public School. Their passion for public education and dedication to your children’s learning not only inspires our students but also strengthens our entire school community. Our teachers work tirelessly to create a positive, nurturing environment where every child has the opportunity to succeed. Everyday, they are helping shape a brighter, more equitable future for us all. Thank you to the P&C for generously donating funds toward a celebratory lunch for our teachers today.

Teachers Federation Meeting - Monday 28/10

This year’s  World Teachers' Day is very timely as a majority of our teachers will be participating in a Teachers Federation meeting on Monday to vote on a new workplace agreement for the next three years. This award is an important step in recognising the goodwill, expertise and dedication that our teachers bring to their roles every day. We are hopeful that the agreement will reflect the value of their hard work and commitment to providing the best education possible for your children. A reminder that, as a result of the meeting, we will have minimal supervision arrangements in place until 10am.  You may choose to drop your children off at the normal time or at 10am when regular supervision arrangements resume.

2025 Planning

I wanted to provide you with a brief update regarding our planning for 2025. The executive team met on Monday to draft plans for several key areas, including class structures and staffing. Projected student numbers suggest an enrolment of 430 students next year - only slightly down on 2024.  I am also pleased to report that we have a healthy Kindy enrolment of 65 students for next year. We have begun to plan class structures and staffing based on these projections and are looking at how to best support our students and utilise the skills and expertise of our permanent and temporary staff members.

On this note, the Enrichment Class Survey closes at 5pm today. The purpose of this survey is to gather some data on parent perceptions of the program so that we can make more informed decisions moving forward. Currently, much of the feedback we have is anecdotal and we want to ensure that everyone has the opportunity to share their views through this  formal survey. The survey is not intended to lead to any major changes. Instead, we are focused on continuous improvement and we are always open to making small changes to ensure that the program continues to meet the needs of our students and community.

P&C Funded Furniture Upgrade

Thank you to our P&C for generously funding a furniture upgrade for our  Kindergarten and Year 5/6 classes. The new flexible furniture was delivered over the holidays and I am pleased to report that our students have been making full use of the new furniture. The flexible learning environment has already proven to be beneficial, allowing students to engage with their work in a way that best suits their learning styles. The P&C’s support in providing these resources is greatly appreciated and contributes significantly to enhancing our students' educational experience

Regards,

John Nguyen

Swim Scheme

This term, Stage One started something exciting and new. From Tuesday to Friday, Year one and two have been going to Ryde Aquatic Centre to participate in Swim School, but it is no ordinary swim school, we don't just learn strokes, we also learn water safety. It is so much fun! We learn how to be safe inside and outside the water, how to swim and new skills.

During our safety lessons we learn things like how to safely jump into the water when in certain situations. We also learn survival strokes such as survival backstroke, survival side stroke and last but not least survival breaststroke. The swimming instructors talk a lot about safety and why it is important that we know these things. However, the fun doesn't stop there! We have also been developing our swim skills with freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke and streamline. The swimming instructors help us to improve our strokes, as it is muscle memory.

PSSA State Athletics Carnival

Congratulations to our 6 students who competed this week at the PSSA State Athletics Carnival at Homebush.

Our Senior boys relay team, including Sam A, Isaac O, Xavi M & Cameron B, came in 14th place.

Jake L came 22nd in discus.

Special mention to Olivia D who competed in 3 events: 800m - she came 6th overall in the State!  100m - she came 22nd and 200m - she came 18th.

Well done team!

NSW PSSA Boys Cricket Championships

Last week I competed in the NSW PSSA boys cricket championships in Armidale representing Sydney East. I had a great time playing and making friends.

The drive there was just under 6 hours, and when we arrived in Armidale, it was pouring down rain. We managed to play our first game the next day which we won, however on the second day, most matches were abandoned due to more rain. This wasn't good for us and the leaderboard!

We won our next game by a fair margin which meant that on the final day we would be competing for third place. The third place match was very tight but we ended up losing, so we finished 4th out of 14 teams which was a great result & I had an experience which I will remember forever.
