From the Leadership Team

A message from our Leadership Team

I hope you were all able to enjoy the extra time with your families over the 4 day weekend, and that Father’s Day was enjoyed by all.

On Friday September 1st, school staff undertook training and development for the day. Teachers were involved in training on reading and assessment, and SSO staff participated in training on communication strategies to support students. Thank you for your support of this day.

During the recent ‘DreamBIG’ arts festival, P8 participated in visual art work with Ms. Conboy. They investigated ‘Paper Play and Is Paper Always Flat’ and linked this work with other curriculum areas including HASS, Technologies and English. The year 3/4 students used procedural writing to recap the artistic and design process and completed written reflections on the unit of work. For their efforts, the class received a special mention from the team at DreamBIG. Congratulations!

You may have noticed that a few things have been happening in the school grounds over the last week or so. Work on the triangular garden near the Junior Primary gate has begun, with the P3 students working with a team from Bunnings on their design and initial plantings. The Garden Club have also been helping, planting the agapanthus. Work will continue over the next few weeks in this space. Thanks to Myf and the students in P3 and Garden Club for their efforts.

Our new signs have also been installed, with a refreshed look at the crossing and a new sign on the administration building.

Thank you for making the time to speak with your child’s class teacher last week during parent teacher interviews. Parent teacher interviews provide the opportunity to discuss your child’s progress and their next steps in learning, and are a valuable part of our reporting process.

As term 3 progresses, we are beginning to plan for the 2024 school year. Our graduating students have been notified of their places in high school next year and are excited about the future. To help us in our planning, if you are in reception to year 5 and know that you will not be returning to Dernancourt in 2024, please can you let us know by completing the form that will be sent out on Audiri. This will help us to accurately plan for the number of students in 2024.

After School Playground Reminder

Dear Families

We appreciate that a number of families enjoy using the school playgrounds after school. When doing so, we just ask that you please be mindful that OSHC utilises the playground as part of its approved space. To assist with our duty of care, we would greatly appreciate it if you could please ensure that your children are supervised in a separate area to the OSHC children. Typically, the OSHC routine involves use of the "Primary’’ playground between 3:30pm and 4:00pm, and the ‘’Early Years’’ playground between 4:00pm and 5:00pm. We also use the ‘’Japanese Garden’’ and ‘’Crow’s Nest’’ throughout this period.

We thank you for your understanding and cooperation.

Regards

Tom Kibble

Sapsasa Netball

On the 1st of August our SAPSASA Netball trip made the long journey to Port Wakefield to play Round 2 of knockout netball. The girls tried hard throughout the day but came up against really good opposition in Maitland Lutheran and Good Shepherd Lutheran Angaston. It was a good learning experience for the girls to play against other schools and a great effort to make it that far.

Thanks to all the parents and Steph who helped transport as without this it increases the cost substantially.

SAPSASA Basketball

The 7th of August saw our Boys & Girls SAPSASA Basketball teams travel to Lightsview Community Sports Centre to complete in a carnival day for round 1 of knockout basketball. The boys team won 1 game while our girls team won 1 and drew 1.

Thanks to Steph Cavallaro for assisting and scoring on the day and a big thank you to Emma Salini for volunteering on her day off to come and coach the girl’s team.

SAPSASA Athletics

We travelled to Bridgestone Athletics Centre on the 17th of August will a large athletics team of 33 students to compete in the Adelaide North East District Athletics Carnival day. The day started off with a lot of doubt if it would even go ahead due to large down pour but thankfully the sun came out and was a great day. We had lots of students who were lucky to come away with ribbons for 1st, 2nd or 3rd while others performed well but fell just short. Dernancourt School placed 5th this year overall which is a great improvement on our 10th placed finish last year.

- Lucas Keiner 1st place in 2013 Boys 100m, 200m & Discus

District Soccer

Kaan Aksoy was selected for the Adelaide North East District Soccer team which competed against other metro school districts at Service FM Stadium located at Gepps Cross. It is a great experience for Kaan and other students who get selected in these teams, as they get to compete against some of the best school sporting players in the state. Kaan scored 2 goals during the competition for his team and performed well throughout.
