Term 2, Week 8 Newsletter

From the Leadership Team

A message from Leadership

It is hard to believe that we are nearing the end of Week 8 of Term 2 already. We are almost half way through the school year.

Today we celebrated Be Kinder Day. A day to remind us to be kind to one another and to help others where we can. At the last assembly, I gave students the challenge of smiling at each other. We soon realised that when we smile at the person next to us, they smiled back, and then the whole room was smiling! It was contagious. This certainly helped to lift spirits at the end of the day. “I smile, you smile” is not only a fun experiment, but research shows that smiling has hidden health befits of lifting mood, boosting the immune system and relieving stress.

Students have been enjoying weekly dancing sessions with the Footsteps Dance crew. It has been wonderful to see students learning dance moves and working together to create a dance. It certainly looks like everyone is having fun.

On Monday June 19, staff undertook training with a focus on wellbeing and school culture. Mahdavi Nawana Parker from Positive Minds Australia spent the day leading us through current wellbeing research and strategies that support student wellbeing and help to keep our own wellbeing strong also. Thank you for your support of this day.

During the Pupil Free Day, a group of dedicated SSOs organised a “Biggest Morning Tea” fundraiser for the Cancer Council. We are proud to say that as a staff, we raised over $1100. This is an amazing effort for a morning tea fundraiser. We can also say that we were well fed during our professional development. Special thanks to the organisers.

Did you know?
Today (Thursday June 22) is the Winter Solstice, meaning that today is the shortest day and longest night of the year. This also means that from tomorrow, the days will start to become longer and we can again begin to dream of sunshine and warmth.

Cricket News

Over the June long weekend Renesh Khatri travelled to Darwin to participate in the 12 years and under boys' and girls' national championship organised by Cricket Australia and school sports Australia. This year there are total 8 teams for boys - SA, Victoria, NSW, ACT, WA, Queensland (2 teams) and NT participated.

Renesh took a total 11 wickets in 5 matches and ended up with the 2nd highest wicket taker nationally. He just missed out by 1 wicket, to be number 1 bowler nationally. It was a great experience to represent SA state team and to come 2nd highest wicket taker nationally and it's a very proud moment for Renesh.

We hope he continues shining and represent SA and Australia teams and continues to make everyone proud of his achievements.

He has also made it to Adelaide High for his high school study in their special cricket entry program.

Kind Regards,

Kieran Ryall

Netball News

Dernancourt Sapsasa Girls Netball Team travelled to Northfield Primary on the 16th of June to participate in round 1 of knockout netball competition, playing 3 games against Modbury West, Ingle Farm and Northfield. The girls all arrived at school full of energy ready for an exciting day of games and laughter. We started the day off by versing Modbury West and although the game started slowly the girls found their groove and came away 9-4 Winners. We then had to play Ingle Farm straight after, which was a very close and came down to the wire with Dernancourt winning 3-2.It all came down to the last game against Northfield with both schools having won their first 2 games already. The girls started really strong leading at quarter time 3-0 before eventually winning 8-4 and being champions of the day meaning they progress through to round 2.Congratulations to all the girls on their great efforts during the day, especially having to play 3 games in a row without a break. Thanks also to Louise O'Donnell and Steph Cavallaro as without their help to transport sporting days are much more difficult to organise.

Kind Regards,

Kieran Ryall
