TERM 3 WEEK 8, 2023

A Message from the Principal

Dear parents/carers,

We have been planning to build a sport court for a few years. Recently we submitted the sports court project with the Department of Education's assets team  and they will organise the will tender.  The project may take some time to finalise but we are looking forward to having a multipurpose court in our playground. We are also planning to lay some synthetic grass in front of K Block under the tree. The area gets very dusty, hopefully synthetic grass will make the area more useable.

Congratulations to Tanishka and Hitansh who were winners in The Hills District Public Speaking Semi Final. They will now represent the school in the district final next term. The competition involves  giving an impromptu or unprepared speech which can be very difficult for students particularly young students- well done Tanishka and Hitansh!!!

We are taking enrolments for Kindergarten 2024, if you know of anyone who lives in the school drawing area and who will be starting kindergarten next year, please advise them they can contact the school office to enrol their child.

regards

Gabrielle Buczynski

Classroom and Preschool News

Preschool

Spring is in the Air

Our snow peas and broccoli are growing well and children helped cut the snow peas and broccoli from our garden. Children are learning to look after our plants and harvest the crop. They are learning how vegetables grow and learning about the importance of eating healthy food.

Mrs Akamatis, Mrs Rowe and the children tasted our beautiful sweet snow peas and steamed broccoli. All the children tried the vegetables and most children liked the snow peas. Our preschool parents were happy to see children learning about healthy eating, tasting the vegetables and looking after our garden.

K-2 Parent Literacy Workshop

On Tuesday 29th August our K-2 families were invited to the school to attend a Literacy Workshop.  The parents who were in attendance provided some very positive feedback and suggestions for future opportunities.

The key message from the workshop to our families is to help build the foundational skills in literacy together in partnership with the school.

Research shows that reading aloud to your child is the single most important thing you can do to prepare your child for reading and learning.  Therefore, please try to build daily routines with opportunities to read alongside your child using the school home readers and other quality texts that are available from the library or at home.

The school has home reading for all classes in K-2 which is a combination of small books going home or accessing the online library via Decodable Readers Australia subscription.   Where possible, find time as regularly as possible to model and share a book with your child, take time to talk about the pictures, the story, characters and/or information in the book. Other benefits of you reading daily alongside your child include:-

  • providing further modelling of what good reading sounds like

  • nurturing a love of reading of good quality literature

  • strengthening the bond and connection with your child

  • developing oral language through discussion

  • building background knowledge and understanding through factual texts

  • expanding their vocabulary and use of words

Our next workshop will be focusing on Mathematics in K-2 and it will be held on Tuesday 19th September.  Parents will have the choice to attend the most convenient time from the 2 options.  Both workshops will be the same so you only need to attend one of them.

Special thanks to the KD students, Mrs Dragotta, Mrs Terry and Mrs Tall for their assistance in preparing and presenting information at this session.

Hills Public Speaking Competition

All classes have been working on their public speaking skills and have all given a prepared speech to their class. From this first round each class sent 2 representatives to our whole school Public Speaking competition. Two students from each stage were selected to represent Pendle Hill Public School at the Hills Public Speaking Semi Final on Wednesday, 6th September. Our 6 students competed against 4 other Hills Public School, at Toongabbie Public School. Each student was asked to give their prepared speech and then present an impromptu speech. They have been practicing the skill of planning for 10 minute then delivering a 1-2 minute speech. This is a difficult skill as they must deliver a logical and interesting speech with limited preparation.

Congratulations to our finalists:

Goransh

Hitansh

Kayan

Sri Diksha

Aarna

Tanishka

A special congratulations to Tanishka and Hitansh  who won medals in their stage, they will represent us in the Hills Public Speaking Final, held in Term 4.

Why Is Attendance at School Important?

Regular attendance at school is important for students at our school to reach their full potential.

We want to do all we can to be sure your child achieves their potential and enjoys being in school. One way we can help make this happen is to be sure your child attends school each day unless they are sick, have COVID symptoms or are absent for a justified reason.

Protecting the wellbeing of our students through the reporting and monitoring of student absences is the responsibility of both parents/carers and schools. Notifying the school either before or on the day that your child is away helps us keep accurate student attendance records to support you and your child.

We know that school is the best place to learn and regular attendance means students can stay on top of their schoolwork and get the most out of their learning. If you are having trouble getting your child to school every day or on time, please talk to our school staff so we can work together, because every day counts.

Missing a day here or there may not seem like much but absences add up and can impact your child’s learning more than you think. When your child misses one day a week over a year, that’s 40 days of school, 8 weeks of lessons and 2.5 years over their school life lost.

Attendance and Absences via the Audiri (Skoolbag) App

  • being required to attend a recognised religious holiday
  • exceptional or urgent family circumstances eg: attending a funeral

Parents must provide an explanation for absences to the school as soon as possible. Absentee notes can be sent through the Skoolbag App to explain your child's absence.
