Drummoyne Public School

Term 3 Week 6 Newsletter - Friday 30 August 2024

FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK

Dear Drummoyne PS Community,

Spring Fete 2024

On behalf of the school, I want to extend my deepest thanks to the parent community for the incredible success of our school fete last Sunday. This year was my first Drummoyne PS Fete experience and it was  truly humbling to witness the immense time, effort and heart that so many of you put into making the day such a triumph. From the Saturday and early-morning setup teams, to the afternoon (evening!) pack-up crew and everyone in between, your dedication is what makes our school such a special place for your children. Thank you for your unwavering support, for volunteering your time and for bringing such joy to our school community. This fete was a true testament to what we can achieve when we all come together.

Of course, the biggest thank you needs to be reserved for our mighty fete committee and P&C. It has been absolutely amazing to see first hand the time, passion and enthusiasm that they, led by Rob and Walid,  put into organising and preparing and running our fete this year. THANK YOU!

PSA Schools Recognition Week

This week is PSA Schools Recognition Week and at DPS, our SAS (School Administrative and Support) staff play a huge part in keeping everything running smoothly. Whether it’s applying band aids, catching spiders, helping out in the classroom, managing the office, organising lost property, booking buses or supporting our students, they are always there, making a big difference every day. Their hard work and dedication doesn't always get the recognition it deserves, but we all know how vital they are. We’re lucky to have such a fantastic team who are a huge part of what makes Drummoyne PS so great. Thank you, Evelyn, Kirsty, Nina, Phil, Kate, Deb, Gemma, Alice, Lucy and Kim for all the support you give to our school community every day.

Back to (core) Business

The last three weeks at our school have been huge, with our teachers going above and beyond to organise the Education Week Open morning, Art Trail, Healthy Harold, Science Week activities, the Solar Buddies &  Mad Food incursions and Book Week parade. It's been a whirlwind of fantastic activities and events for our students and community. I want to thank our staff for the hard work, flexibility (and resilience!?!) that has made it all possible. That being said, we will be making a concerted effort  to minimise disruptions for the remainder of the term (as much as is possible) in order to refocus on the teaching and learning that happens in our classrooms everyday.

Regards,

John Nguyen

Principal's Awards and Principal's Badges

Students receive values certificates from their teachers throughout the year for demonstrating our values of Respect, Responsibility and Resilience.

Once a student receives 5 values certificates, they are able to trade them in at the school office for a Principal's Award.  The 5 values certificates can be a combination of the 3 school values and come from any year the student has been at DPS.

Once the student has received 3 Principal's Awards, they can bring them to the school office and choose their Principal's Badge from one of the 3 values.

Debating Report

This week Drummoyne debated against Nicholson St Public School in our fifth round. The topic was ‘AI is the way of the future’.

The affirmative team, the Lyons were the away team, with Sophie as 1st speaker, Oliver as 2nd speaker, Sophia as 3rd speaker and Theo as team advisor. They presented some great points and had clearly done some extensive research, driving their case home with a compelling team line, ‘AI, shaping tomorrow and today’. Congratulations to all four students on their convincing win.

The Hawkes were the home team. As the negative, they argued that there are many issues with over dependence on AI and gave evidence to back up their arguments. The Lyons’ team line was ‘A Future Built by Humans, Not Machines!’ Congratulations to 1st speaker Maeve, 2nd speaker Eme, 3rd speaker David and team advisor Aydin on also winning their debate.

Many thanks to Sophia’s mum, Corina for providing transport. Also, thank you to our chairperson Shireen, timekeepers Ava and Aria, and meeter and greeter, Olive.

    P&C ANNOUNCEMENTS

Thank you for a Wonderful Spring Fete 🌸🎉!!

We are delighted to extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone who contributed to making our 2024 Fete a resounding success! Your support and enthusiasm truly brought this year’s event to life. We couldn’t have done it without you.

The fete is not only a fantastic annual community event, but also the major annual fundraiser for the DPS P&C Association. This year we had ambitions to raise $30k from the event. We are very pleased to share that this lofty goal was exceeded, with over $40k raised!

All proceeds from the fete will go towards enhancing educational resources and facilities for our students.

Many people played a part to ensure this event could happen. To recognise these efforts in no particular order:

    • Our incredible volunteers who dedicated their time and energy to ensure everything ran smoothly. From setting up stalls to managing activities; your commitment was truly inspiring.

    • This year we had record levels of support from local business sponsors and prize donors whose generous contributions helped make this event possible. Your support plays a crucial role in enriching our school’s programs and initiatives.

    • Our dedicated Fete and Sponsorship Committee members who spend many hours behind the scenes planning out the event: Belinda Hubball, Corinne Mawson, Sam Voukenas, Huy Nguon, Bahar Soyutemiz, Josh Munday, Angela Farrell, Preston Peachey, Mark Morgant, Jasmine Evans, Hannah Heath, Emma Auzins, Ellena Wens, Tim Counter, Dee Elalingam, Leanne Bridges, Emily Tolliday, Megan De Sousa, Tania Adams, Belle Paton, and Esther Knox.

    • To Mr Nguyen, who was not only a great sport participating in the dunk tank, but also played a big part in coordinating logistics for the day. Also a massive thank you to the school office and admin staff: Nina, Evelyn, Kirsty, Param and Phil who went above and beyond their day job to assist with a great number of inquiries related to the event.

    • To the many students and teachers involved in musical and dance acts on the day. You provided great entertainment for the crowd. Special mention to our Fete Reporter, Tyler Bridges and the students who featured in the promotional videos.

    • But finally, to all the school families and friends who attended, your presence and participation created an atmosphere of joy and community spirit.

Thank you once again for making the Spring Fete such a remarkable occasion. We’re already excited for next year’s celebration!

    Warm regards,

    Rob Tolliday & Walid El-Khoury

    Class Pizza Party winner announced!!

The annual school fete is a great opportunity to bring together past and present students of Drummoyne Public School, their families and the broader community.  It’s a day of lots of smiles and fun.  It is also the schools leading fundraising event that provides critical funding to the school, benefiting students in a variety of ways each year.  The support of parents and carers in generously giving their time and/or financial support in the lead up and on fete is always greatly appreciated and celebrated.

Many classes have pulled together as a team to donate financially towards the 2024 fete via both cash donations and parent business sponsorship (bronze and silver packages).

We would like to acknowledge these leading classes...

5/6P came out on top, donating over $1350 in funds. This class will celebrate their success with the coveted pizza party!

3/4W and 3/4K both with over $600 in class donations will celebrate with a zooper dooper party!

    Congratulations to all our winners.

Special thanks also goes to the parents and friends who have gathered or donated vouchers and other in-kind support - the silent auction overall achieved a record of nearly $15,000!

Finally, thanks to all who generously donated their time, resources and financial support to what was a great day!
