ACKNOWLEDGEMENT OF COUNTRY

Kearns Public School would like to acknowledge that we meet, learn, and play on the homelands of the Dharawal people who are the Ongoing Custodians of this land. We pay respect to Elders past and present as ongoing teachers of knowledge, songlines and stories. We take pride in our cultural connectedness and walk hand in hand to share Aboriginal heritage, culture, and history.

A MESSAGE FROM MS PHILLIPS

Dear Parents and Carers,

As we come to the end of another fantastic term, I’d like to take a moment to acknowledge the tremendous effort, kindness, and resilience our students have demonstrated throughout Term 2. They have engaged wholeheartedly in their learning, supported one another, and participated in a wide range of activities with energy and enthusiasm. We are incredibly proud of all they have accomplished.

As we head into the winter break, I encourage families to take this time to rest, recharge, and enjoy special moments together. Please remind your children to stay safe—whether they’re out in the community, riding bikes or scooters, or simply enjoying their time at home.

We look forward to welcoming students back on Tuesday, 22 July for the start of Term 3, refreshed and ready for another exciting term of learning and growth.

Wishing you and your family a safe, restful, and enjoyable holiday.

Ms Philips

ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL ADDRESS - K-2

As we approach the end of another busy term, we want to take a moment to express our gratitude to our families for your incredible support in your child’s learning. Your dedication to helping with homework and encouraging reading at home is making a difference in our students' learning journeys. Reading together not only enhances your child’s literacy skills but also fosters a love for stories and imagination. We encourage you to continue this practice, exploring new books and sharing stories that ignite curiosity and joy.

We also take this time to celebrate the success of our recent K-2 Fun Run! It was an exhilarating day filled with laughter, teamwork, and plenty of energy. Seeing our students actively participate, cheer each other on, and enjoy the outdoors, was truly heart-warming. We welcomed your excitement in cheering on our little runners.

We look forward to seeing what amazing adventures Term 3 brings to our K-2 students.

ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL ADDRESS YEARS 3 - 6

As the term draws to a close, I want to take a moment to reflect on the wonderful learning, growth, and joy we've seen across Years 3–6. Over the past five weeks, our students have embraced a wide range of opportunities, both in and out of the classroom. Their curiosity, creativity, and collaboration have been a pleasure to witness, and I’m incredibly proud of all they’ve achieved.

Stage 2 Genre Study – Iceberg by Claire Saxby

This term, Stage 2 students have been exploring the concept of genre through their study of the beautifully written and illustrated text Iceberg by Claire Saxby. As part of their learning, students have been diving into the language features and structure of informative texts, while also deepening their understanding of the natural world.

I have had the pleasure of students visiting and proudly sharing their stunning artworks and carefully labelled diagrams of icebergs. It has been wonderful to see their creativity, attention to detail, and enthusiasm for learning on full display. Their work truly reflects the thoughtful and engaging learning happening in classrooms.

Stage 3 Exploring Belonging Through Dry to Dry: The Seasons of Kakadu

Stage 3 students have been exploring the theme of belonging through the captivating text Dry to Dry: The Seasons of Kakadu by Pamela Freeman and Liz Anelli. This book takes readers on an informative and entertaining journey through the unique and diverse seasons of Australia’s Kakadu National Park.

The collaboration between author Pamela Freeman and illustrator Liz Anelli beautifully brings the vibrant ecosystem of Kakadu to life. As part of their learning, students have been examining the dual nature of this hybrid text, which combines both informative and imaginative writing styles. This has encouraged them to appreciate the rich storytelling while deepening their understanding of the natural environment and cultural significance of the region.

Gala Day

We were excited to launch Gala Day Season 2 this term, with many students proudly representing our school in soccer and netball. These events have provided a fantastic opportunity for students to develop skills, form new friendships, and experience the excitement of inter-school sports. Whether on the soccer field or the netball court, our students showed teamwork, determination, and school spirit.

School Disco Fun

Our recent school disco was a huge success and a whole lot of fun! Students from Kindergarten to Year 6 danced away to their favourite songs, with plenty of energy, laughter, and some impressive moves on the dance floor. One of the highlights was a surprise dance-off between Mr Tomasich and myself — we threw down some epic moves that had the students cheering (and laughing) the whole time!

Most importantly, the event served as a fundraiser for our Year 6 farewell, and thanks to the generous support of our families, we raised $250. We are sincerely grateful for your contributions and support in making this event both enjoyable and meaningful for our school community.

Year 6 Cadbury Chocolate Fundraiser – Thank You

A big thank you to our families who have supported our Year 6 Cadbury Chocolate Fundraiser! Your contributions are helping to raise funds for end-of-year activities and graduation celebrations. We truly appreciate your ongoing support and generosity. Your efforts are helping to make this a memorable and rewarding year for our Year 6 cohort.

Year 6 Fundraiser – Pyjama Day & Hot Chocolate

This Friday, we are super excited to be holding a cosy Pyjama Day and Hot Chocolate Mufti as part of our Year 6 fundraiser! Students are invited to come to school dressed in their favourite pyjamas or comfy clothes and enjoy a delicious cup of hot chocolate. It is the perfect way to stay warm and have a little fun while supporting our Year 6 students as they raise funds for their end-of-year celebrations. Thank you for your ongoing support, we are looking forward to a fun and toasty day!

Thank you for your continued support throughout the term. It plays such an important role in your child's journey. I wish each of our families a safe, restful, and enjoyable break. We look forward to welcoming everyone back refreshed and ready for the new term ahead.

APCI NEWS

Student Semester One reports were distributed last week. A lot of work goes into ensuring reporting is accurate and relevant to each individual student. Time is allocated to look at student achievement with teachers from the same stage of learning and part of the role of the APCI is to guide teachers through this. Work samples and assessments are examined in line with stage outcomes and students are graded based on multiple pieces of evidence. It is also important to ensure that teachers are supported to consider the next steps for each student to further support their learning. The APCI also oversees students in the school who receive additional tuition and reports on their progress. If you have any questions or concerns about your child's report, please make an appointment to speak to their teacher.

Student Leaders

Our student leaders meet each fortnight with a member of the school leadership team. During these meetings, we discuss upcoming school events and consider how our student leaders can support during this time. Our agenda will also include items for discussion and any questions or concerns leaders may have. Student leaders are also assigned responsibilities during these meetings, one of which recently included interviewing all of our SRC members. This allowed us to create a wonderful display to acknowledge our SRC and create a visual representation for all students to know things about them. If you get a chance, pop into the canteen area to look at the student display. Maybe you can add your input as to whether pineapple does or doesn't belong on pizza!

Our leaders also decided to include afternoon tea as part of our meeting and now take turns providing food. Our meetings are even more enjoyable now that we have cake and hot chocolate to look forward to! At our last meeting, we were thrilled to invite our Director Educational Leadership, Karen Endicott, to join us. She was very impressed with the contributions of all students and valued hearing their opinions. At KPS, student voice matters. We look forward to continuing with our productive meetings next term.

SRC

Our SRC introduced their first philanthropic venture into Kearns this term. We voted to take part in the 'Lunch With Love' initiative, where the school is asked to collect food items for vulnerable students and communities. We were very grateful to have such wonderful community support and look forward to delivering the donations to our charity partners in the holidays. SRC representatives have been seeking opinions from their classmates on what they would like to see at school. We will continue to consider all contributions during our fortnightly meetings next term.

NEWS FROM THE LIBRARY

Kindergarten students have become library explorers! They’ve been learning how books work by sorting titles into fiction and non-fiction and discussing the features that make each type unique. With a growing awareness of text purpose, our youngest learners are beginning to choose books with confidence and curiosity.

Stage 1 students have stepped into the world of robotics with BeeBots. These programmable floor robots have been the perfect tools for developing early coding skills. Students have used directional commands to solve challenges, navigate simple maps, and even build obstacle courses, encouraging both teamwork and logical thinking.

In Stage 2, the spotlight has been on building digital confidence through coding. Using Code.org, students have tackled interactive tasks that introduce key concepts like algorithms, loops, and debugging. They’ve also started reflecting on how technology shapes our world and how to make safe, respectful choices online.

Stage 3 students have been thinking like real programmers. They’ve used block coding to create interactive games, animations, and stories that respond to user input. With a focus on design, problem-solving, and user experience, they’re developing not just technical skills, but creative and critical thinking habits as well.

Across every stage, students are being empowered to become thinkers, makers, and ethical users of information and technology. We look forward to sharing more exciting learning ahead!

GREEN TEAM NEWS

Our Green Team have worked hard this term with their recycling efforts. It is great seeing our students come together, working collaboratively to keep our school tidy.

Students are responsible for the weekly collection of all recycling from our classrooms, learning spaces and administration block.

We are excited for Term 3 projects where we negotiate our next steps with our proposed worm farm.

Any students wishing to join the Green Team are most welcome.

Miss Watson - Green Team Coordinator

SCHOOL UNIFORM

It is important that students come to school in the correct winter uniform, including a Kearns Public School jumper or jacket. Please also ensure students do not come to school wearing dangly earrings and have long hair tied back.

LOST PROPERTY REMINDER

Our lost property tubs are overflowing with unclaimed items, including clothing, drink bottles, and lunch boxes. The tub is located just outside the school office, and families are welcome to come by and check for any missing belongings.

To help us return items promptly, please ensure all clothing and personal belongings are clearly labelled with your child’s name. This simple step makes it much easier for staff to reunite lost items with their owners.

Any unclaimed items remaining after Friday of Week 10 will be either donated to a local charity or responsibly disposed of.

Thank you for helping us manage lost property and keep our school environment tidy and organised.

BREAKFAST CLUB

Breakfast Club runs on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday mornings from 8:25 am at the school canteen. This is a free service available to support students who need a healthy start to their day.

We are sincerely grateful to Foodbank for their generous support of this initiative, and to our wonderful volunteers, Mrs Wallance, Mrs Mann, and Miss Chiswick, who make Breakfast Club possible each week with their time and dedication.

KINDERGARTEN 2026

Our school is now taking enrolments for Kindergarten 2026. If you have a child who will be starting school next year, please contact the school office who will support you with this process.

CONTACT DETAILS – ARE YOUR DETAILS UP TO DATE ?

Sometimes we will need to contact you, including on the day that your child is absent, or if you haven’t notified the school with a reason for your child being away. If your contact details are out of date or if you’re not sure, please contact us on  or (02) 9820 7039  so we can update our records and can contact you quickly when we need to.

Please include parent/carers name, address, phone numbers, email address and emergency contact details. Please remember to contact the school if any of these details or your circumstances change. This is particularly important so we can work together to protect the wellbeing of our students through the reporting and monitoring of student absences.

ROAD SAFETY REMINDER - KEEP OUR STUDENTS SAFE

We kindly remind all parents and carers to follow road rules and model safe behaviours around our school. The safety of our students is everyone's responsibility, and we appreciate your support in keeping drop-off and pick-up times calm, safe, and efficient.

Please ensure the following:

  • Always obey road signs and traffic regulations near the school.

  • Encourage safe pedestrian behaviour by using designated crossings and modelling safe walking practices.

  • Ensure students exit vehicles from the kerb side only in the ‘Kiss and Drop zone’.

  • Do not perform U-turns across double lines or reverse in the ‘Kiss and Drop zone’, as this creates significant risks for children and other road users.

Thank you for working with us to keep all students and families safe during busy school times.

HOLIDAY SAFETY REMINDER

As we head into the school holidays, we encourage all students and families to stay safe and make smart choices while enjoying their Winter  break.

Please take a moment to discuss the following safety tips with your child:

  • Stranger Safety: Remind children never to speak with or go anywhere with someone they don't know. If they feel unsafe or unsure, they should seek help from a trusted adult or call a parent or carer immediately.

  • Bike and Scooter Safety: Always wear a helmet when riding and stay alert to traffic and pedestrians. Stick to footpaths or designated bike paths, and avoid busy roads.

  • Community Conduct: Students are reminded not to loiter around local shops or the community hall, including the Kearns Shops, and to be respectful of community spaces and businesses.

We hope all our students enjoy a fun and restful break. Staying safe and showing respect in the community ensures a positive experience for everyone.
