2025 Term 3 Issue #7

From the Principal

 Dear families & friends,

Inquiry

Our inquiry this term, ‘Animals survival depends on us’, started with our excursion to Gorge wildlife park. This inquiry will take students on a journey of understanding how humans impact both negatively and positively on animal survival and whether or not animals do depend on us for survival.

Learning Summary Reports & Conferences

Learning summary reports were sent home with students on Friday of week 9 and we are part way through our conferences. Laura will arrange Conferences for her class on her return. Thank you to everyone who has taken the time to read reports and meet with class teachers to support their child's learning journey with us.

Naplan

We have received our Naplan results for all our Year 3 and 5 students. We were very pleased to see we have maintained a ‘strong’ level in all areas for our year 5 students. Year 5 students also all demonstrated medium and upper progress in Reading and Numeracy. Our very small year 3 cohort (only 5 students) were Strong level of proficiency in all areas apart from Grammar and Punctuation.

P.A.T. (Progressive Assessment Tests)

We are currently getting ready to run our annual PAT assessments in Reading and Mathematics. These assessments are crucial in our planning and involves all our year 1 – 6 students. These assessment will run as part of the students literacy and numeracy learning program in the last few weeks of term.

Pupil Free Day

Our pupil free day allowed the time for staff to complete some mandated training in the Departments new Culturally Responsive Framework, as well as have rich and deep discussions about student support and progress along with some valuable whole team planning.

Traffic update

Thank you to Ken (Adelaide's dad) who has been communicating with our local MP Claire Clutterham (pictured) since she was elected as the member for Sturt. As a consequence of this, Claire came to meet with Ken and I at the front of the school on Wednesday morning (13th August) to observe and discuss traffic management and safety. Claire witnessed first hand some of our concerns and has agreed to support us around our ongoing quest for a proper crossing for families and students to increase safety for all.

A big thank you to Ken for persisiting and coordinating this meeting and to Claire for giving us her time and ear to listen to and observe our ongoing concerns. Fingers crossed she can help us make our road safer for everyone!

Felixstow Highlights

Learning Expo

We had our learning expo at the end of term 2 whereby our students were able to showcase their learning to their families.

Morialta Day

At the end of last term our whole school had a wonderful day at Morialta; walking, exploring and just having fun!

Pyjama Day

Our last day of term 2, Pyjama Day. Students were happy they didn't having to wear their school uniform and enjoyed a mug of hot chocolate and a doughnut.

Oliver Wins National Coding Competition

Congratulations to Oliver (P2) for winning the Code Club Australia coding competition. Oliver spent many hours creating his winning game.

Oliver: Last term we had a coding club. When I heard about a coding competition I decided to enter and make a Flappy Bird inspired game. My game was called 'Penguins Learn to Fly' and it won the competition. I feel really happy about winning and I won a laptop for the school which I get to use and a bag full of Code Club prizes.

Student School Value Awards

In Ban Ba Ban Bayla this week, twelve students received an award for displaying the school values of respect, responsibility and compassion or showing one or more of the attributes of the six global competencies (6 C's); character, citizenship, collaboration, communication, critical thinking and creativity. Well done to the following students;

Juniors; Charlie, Atreyu, Pendo, Ricky, Zahara, Aiden and Taha

Primary; Tess, Kaiyote, Daniel, Theo and Sonam

Gorge Wildlife Park

On Tuesday, our whole school visited the Gorge Wildlife Park as part of our Inquiry topic 'Animal survival depends on us'.

Juniors with Sharni, Sarah and Abby

Our junior primary students have been diving into the world of measurement, beginning the unit with length. To support targeted and specific learning, the Receptions and Year 1/2s have been splitting into smaller groups for their Maths lessons. The Year 1/2 students have taken part in a range of hands-on activities and building challenges to explore length in meaningful ways. They’ve been on nature scavenger hunts, comparing sticks, leaves and other natural objects based on their length. They've also been learning to measure objects using informal units such as blocks or counters and discovered the importance of using uniform items of the same size to ensure accuracy. Some of our curious Year 2s have taken their learning a step further, experimenting with metric measurements like centimetres and exploring how to use a tape measure correctly. Meanwhile, our Reception learners have also been busy exploring length through play-based and physical learning experiences. They’ve measured distances using imaginative tools like "ants" and have been comparing objects that are long and short. One of their favourite activities has been throwing different objects and measuring how far they travel, helping them connect the concept of length to everyday experiences. We’ve loved seeing our young mathematicians thinking critically, moving their bodies, and applying their measurement skills to the world around them!

Laura and Leigh's Class (P1)

We've had a wonderful first few weeks of term in P1. It's been great for the students to be back with such a positive attitude for learning.

Mathematics

In math, we are currently working on measurement. Students have been exploring the area of 2D shapes and the volume of 3D shapes in a variety of ways.

Literacy

We have had a continued focus on reading fluently during our reading lessons over the past few weeks. Students have also been working on visualising while either themselves or a partner reads. We are also working on our persuasive writing skills and the ability to convince others to our point of view.

Inquiry

Students are deep in the exploratory stage of our new inquiry topic for the term. Our overarching theme this semester is 'Animal survival depends on us', which has been explored at a global, local and community level.

Steve's Class (P2) News

Over the past few weeks, students in P2 have been engaged in a range of meaningful learning experiences across science, literacy and inquiry. In our science investigation, our focus has been on understanding the scientific method. Students have been working through each stage—posing questions, forming hypotheses, conducting experiments and recording observations. This hands-on approach has encouraged curiosity, critical thinking and collaboration, with students gaining a clearer understanding of how scientists investigate the world around them. We have also taken our learning outside with some nature journaling sessions. A visit to Felixstow Reserve provided the perfect opportunity for students to observe nature closely and thoughtfully. Using sketches, labels, and short reflections, students recorded what they noticed in the environment, helping to build awareness and appreciation for the natural world. In literacy, we’ve been developing persuasive speeches on a range of environmental issues. Students have selected topics that matter to them, including plastic pollution, deforestation and endangered animals. Through guided writing sessions, they have been learning how to use persuasive devices such as emotive language, repetition and rhetorical questions to strengthen their arguments and communicate their message effectively in a two-minute speech.

Resource Pod - Library News

The Premier's Reading Challenge

A reminder that the final day of the Challenge is Wednesday 3rd September (week 7). Record sheets must be handed in to Kelly, Gillian or your child's class teacher no later than this date and can be handed in any time before if the student has completed the Challenge. Awards are given to students who have completed the Challenge (once the school has received them) at a Ban Ba Ban Bayla in Term 4.

Breaktime Activities

The Resource Pod is now open for one breaktime a day, offering students a variety of activities to participate in or just a safe space to relax and read a book. We will be holding some themed sessions in the near future and welcome any suggestions the students may have.

Borrowing/Returning Books

Students have the opportunity to borrow books from the Resource Pod during scheduled class times and when the Pod is open at break times. All books are on loan for two weeks and the due date can be found on a slip attached to the inside back cover of the book or on a book mark. Please return the books by the due date or before if finished, as other students may be waiting to borrow them.

Book Week

Children’s Book Week is The Children's Book Council of Australia's (CBCA) key highlight national event of the year and this years theme is 'Book an Adventure'. Our school will be celebrating Book Week on Friday 22nd August with a parade on the green. Your children are encouraged to dress up as their favourite book character and parents are welcome to stay and watch the parade.

2025 is also a milestone year for the CBCA as it celebrates 80 years of Children’s Book Week! For 8 decades, CBCA has been dedicated to inspiring young minds to journey through the countless worlds that books offer.

Their feature artist for the year, Jess McGeachin, has brilliantly captured this adventurous spirit in his artwork, which features a whimsical map filled with imaginary characters. Jess’ illustration invites young readers to embark on fantastical journeys, inspiring them to travel through the worlds that books open up. As an award-winning Australian picture book illustrator, Jess’ work encourages children to imagine, explore, and create their own adventures.

OSHC

What's New at OSHC?

Hi everyone,

I’m excited to share a few updates from OSHC with you!

Firstly – if you didn’t already know – I’m back! After some time away on maternity leave, I’ve returned to OSHC and am currently working two days a week. It’s been so lovely to reconnect with the children and families, and I’m really enjoying being back, supporting the team and creating a safe, fun space for everyone.

We’ve also welcomed some amazing new educators to our service. Please say hello to Kimia, Georgia, Brodie, Andie, and Virginia when you see them around! You’ll also occasionally see Steve and Nyree during Vacation Care. Our team has been doing a fantastic job and bringing lots of energy and creativity to the program.

We still have some places available for term bookings, but they are filling up fast. If you're a new family or need to adjust your bookings, feel free to get in touch:📧 felixstow.oshc@schools.sa.edu.au

Activity Highlight: One of our favourite experiences this term was an afternoon spent in the forest for some pretend camping. The children had such a great time building shelters, imagining campfires, sharing stories, and just enjoying being outdoors. It was such a positive session, and we’ll definitely be planning more nature-based play soon!

Vacation Care is just around the corner: Spots are already filling. Make sure to book in early to secure your place and check out the details on the Audiri app.
