Welcome to the new school year! We commence the term with 332 students (14 classrooms) which includes 46 reception students; 29 of whom are starting school for the first time (with the remaining Reception students being a part of last year's mid-year intake). We welcome these children, and also students in other year levels who have joined our school. We trust their time at Henley Beach will be enjoyable and rewarding. All classes have done an amazing job in settling into their routines and learning since the beginning of term and we are looking forward to a great year ahead for Henley Beach Primary.
Our school’s teaching and learning focus for 2025 will be centred on 3 key areas: Writing, Mathematics and Wellbeing for Learning. These priorities have been carefully selected to support the ongoing academic and personal development of every student.
· Writing: Over the past 3-4 years we have had a strong focus on reading, and for this year, we will be shifting our emphasis to writing. This strategic move is part of our broader improvement planning, aimed at providing a balanced and comprehensive literacy program. Whilst reading remains a foundational skill, enhancing our focus on writing will equip our students to become confident writers who can communicate effectively across various contexts.
· Problem Solving in Mathematics: Developing strong problem-solving skills is essential for success in mathematics and beyond. We will focus on students developing the knowledge, skills and dispositions needed to tackle mathematical challenges, fostering critical thinking and reasoning skills.
· Wellbeing for Learning: We recognise the vital role that wellbeing plays in a student's ability to learn and thrive. Our initiatives will support the emotional, social, and physical wellbeing of our students, creating a nurturing environment where every child feels valued and supported. We will also be having a strong focus on ‘Learnership’, a term used to describe the importance of children developing a range of habits and qualities that will support them to be an effective learner, at school and beyond.
We are committed to working collaboratively with our community to achieve these goals and look forward to the positive impact they will have on our students' learning experiences. These goals also reflect the feedback shared via last year’s Family Homework Task and I look forward to sharing the information gained from this activity with the community in future newsletters. Further to our commitment to enhancing our school community we are looking to introduce an initiative that promotes family connections via the presence of a Community Connections Team for various grade level cohorts; further information about this concept will be sent out in the coming week.
Thank you to the many families who came along to yesterday's Acquaintance Night, we hope that it provided a positive opportunity to meet your child's teacher and look around the school. At any time during the year I encourage you to talk to myself, the leadership team and our teachers about your child, their learning and any other queries you may have.
Student Safety and School Organisation Perspectives
Please be aware of the following aspects relating to student supervision and safety:
· School grounds are supervised between 8.30am – 3.10pm. Students should not be on the school grounds prior to 8.30am. It is also a requirement that in the afternoons (beyond 3.10pm), if students are on the school grounds, that they are with a supervising adult.
· Students are not permitted to ride their bikes or scooters on school grounds. Students who ride a bike or scooter to school need to walk once they are inside the school gates. Students are allowed to ride bikes on school grounds after 4pm (provided they have parent/carer supervision).
· Students (from Rec – Yr 6) cannot leave the school grounds during regular class time on their own, regardless if a permission note has been provided by a parent/carer. All students need to be collected by a parent/carer from the front office if they need to leave the grounds between 8.30-3.00pm.
· Please use the start of the year to reinforce safe pedestrian habits with your child by using the designated school crossings when arriving and leaving school. We look forward to our student crossing monitors continuing in this role; if your child has the opportunity to volunteer to help with this job, please encourage them to do so as it is a great way to promote positive community values.
· Please ensure the kiss and drop space is used appropriately as it is only a short-term parking space.
Student use of mobile phones and personal devices:
The Department for Education’s policy requires all students to keep personal devices ‘off and away’ between the start and end of each school day. While mobile phones have an important place in our society and offer many benefits, they can also put students’ safety and wellbeing at risk when they are used inappropriately. Keeping them off and away during school hours helps us to limit the negative impact from unsafe or inappropriate use.
Students will not be able to access their personal devices at any time during school hours, unless they have received an approved exemption from the school to use the device for a specific, agreed reason. If a student has a wearable device, the same expectations for their use apply, including the need to switch it to flight mode when at school. If you need to get in touch with your child during school hours, please contact the Front Office so staff can assist with passing on a message or connecting you with your child.
Once students enter our school grounds, mobile phones/wearable devices must be switched off and not used. Prior to the first bell, students are to hand their mobile phone to the Front Office where they will be stored securely. Students can collect their device from the office after dismissal time. Students are not permitted to take mobile phones while they are attending school activities off-site, such as camps and excursions. Henley Beach Primary School does not take responsibility for any loss of a phone/device that is kept in a school bag throughout the day, so please strongly encourage your child to follow these expectations.
The aim of this policy is to help promote safe environments with reduced negative impacts of inappropriate use of devices at school; all students are expected to communicate respectfully with others and not use a mobile phone or other personal device to bully, harass or threaten another person. Students must respect others’ right to privacy and not take photos, film or audio records of other people at any time regardless of if they have given consent or not. This expectation applies during school hours and after dismissal time. More information can be found on the Department for Education’s website at: http://phonesoff.sa.gov.au/.
NAPLAN
The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) assesses literacy and numeracy skills that are essential for every child to progress through school and life. Students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 participate in the annual NAPLAN tests in reading, writing, conventions of language (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and numeracy. The assessment provides parents and schools with an understanding of how individual students are performing at the time of the tests. NAPLAN is just one aspect of a school’s assessment and reporting process – it does not replace ongoing assessments made by teachers about student performance.
Our students in years 3 and 5 will be participating in NAPLAN Online this year. The NAPLAN Online test window is 12 to 24 March (weeks 7 and 8, this term). Whilst we encourage all students to participate in NAPLAN there are options for families who do not want their child to participate. This can be done through seeking either an exemption or withdrawal. Please speak to your child’s teacher over the coming weeks if this is something that you want to discuss further.
Prior to the actual test, schools will participate in a national coordinated practice test (CPT) on Tuesday 25 February. The practice test runs for 45 minutes and student performance is not assessed. The purpose of this test is to ensure the technical capacity of the school is satisfactory and to familiarise students with the testing platform.
Please be aware of the privacy collection notice and parent information brochure that have been made available via Audiri. If you have any queries regarding NAPLAN please contact your child’s class teacher or a member of the leadership team.

In January a new set of soccer goals were installed, including levelling out the ground space around them. We are looking forward to this equipment getting lots of use throughout the year!
