Henley Beach Primary School Newsletter

Term 1 week 2 - Wednesday 5 February 2025

From the Principal - Stephen Jolley

Welcome to the new school year! We commence the term with 332 students (14 classrooms) which includes 46 reception students; 29 of whom are starting school for the first time (with the remaining Reception students being a part of last year's mid-year intake). We welcome these children, and also students in other year levels who have joined our school. We trust their time at Henley Beach will be enjoyable and rewarding. All classes have done an amazing job in settling into their routines and learning since the beginning of term and we are looking forward to a great year ahead for Henley Beach Primary.

Our school’s teaching and learning focus for 2025 will be centred on 3 key areas: Writing, Mathematics and Wellbeing for Learning. These priorities have been carefully selected to support the ongoing academic and personal development of every student.

· Writing: Over the past 3-4 years we have had a strong focus on reading, and for this year, we will be shifting our emphasis to writing. This strategic move is part of our broader improvement planning, aimed at providing a balanced and comprehensive literacy program. Whilst reading remains a foundational skill, enhancing our focus on writing will equip our students to become confident writers who can communicate effectively across various contexts.

· Problem Solving in Mathematics: Developing strong problem-solving skills is essential for success in mathematics and beyond. We will focus on students developing the knowledge, skills and dispositions needed to tackle mathematical challenges, fostering critical thinking and reasoning skills.

· Wellbeing for Learning: We recognise the vital role that wellbeing plays in a student's ability to learn and thrive. Our initiatives will support the emotional, social, and physical wellbeing of our students, creating a nurturing environment where every child feels valued and supported. We will also be having a strong focus on ‘Learnership’, a term used to describe the importance of children developing a range of habits and qualities that will support them to be an effective learner, at school and beyond.

We are committed to working collaboratively with our community to achieve these goals and look forward to the positive impact they will have on our students' learning experiences. These goals also reflect the feedback shared via last year’s Family Homework Task and I look forward to sharing the information gained from this activity with the community in future newsletters. Further to our commitment to enhancing our school community we are looking to introduce an initiative that promotes family connections via the presence of a Community Connections Team for various grade level cohorts; further information about this concept will be sent out in the coming week.

Thank you to the many families who came along to yesterday's Acquaintance Night, we hope that it provided a positive opportunity to meet your child's teacher and look around the school. At any time during the year I encourage you to talk to myself, the leadership team and our teachers about your child, their learning and any other queries you may have.

Student Safety and School Organisation Perspectives

Please be aware of the following aspects relating to student supervision and safety:

· School grounds are supervised between 8.30am – 3.10pm. Students should not be on the school grounds prior to 8.30am. It is also a requirement that in the afternoons (beyond 3.10pm), if students are on the school grounds, that they are with a supervising adult.

· Students are not permitted to ride their bikes or scooters on school grounds. Students who ride a bike or scooter to school need to walk once they are inside the school gates. Students are allowed to ride bikes on school grounds after 4pm (provided they have parent/carer supervision).

· Students (from Rec – Yr 6) cannot leave the school grounds during regular class time on their own, regardless if a permission note has been provided by a parent/carer. All students need to be collected by a parent/carer from the front office if they need to leave the grounds between 8.30-3.00pm.

· Please use the start of the year to reinforce safe pedestrian habits with your child by using the designated school crossings when arriving and leaving school. We look forward to our student crossing monitors continuing in this role; if your child has the opportunity to volunteer to help with this job, please encourage them to do so as it is a great way to promote positive community values.

· Please ensure the kiss and drop space is used appropriately as it is only a short-term parking space.

Student use of mobile phones and personal devices:

The Department for Education’s policy requires all students to keep personal devices ‘off and away’ between the start and end of each school day. While mobile phones have an important place in our society and offer many benefits, they can also put students’ safety and wellbeing at risk when they are used inappropriately. Keeping them off and away during school hours helps us to limit the negative impact from unsafe or inappropriate use.

Students will not be able to access their personal devices at any time during school hours, unless they have received an approved exemption from the school to use the device for a specific, agreed reason. If a student has a wearable device, the same expectations for their use apply, including the need to switch it to flight mode when at school. If you need to get in touch with your child during school hours, please contact the Front Office so staff can assist with passing on a message or connecting you with your child.

Once students enter our school grounds, mobile phones/wearable devices must be switched off and not used. Prior to the first bell, students are to hand their mobile phone to the Front Office where they will be stored securely. Students can collect their device from the office after dismissal time. Students are not permitted to take mobile phones while they are attending school activities off-site, such as camps and excursions. Henley Beach Primary School does not take responsibility for any loss of a phone/device that is kept in a school bag throughout the day, so please strongly encourage your child to follow these expectations.

The aim of this policy is to help promote safe environments with reduced negative impacts of inappropriate use of devices at school; all students are expected to communicate respectfully with others and not use a mobile phone or other personal device to bully, harass or threaten another person. Students must respect others’ right to privacy and not take photos, film or audio records of other people at any time regardless of if they have given consent or not. This expectation applies during school hours and after dismissal time. More information can be found on the Department for Education’s website at: http://phonesoff.sa.gov.au/.

NAPLAN

The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) assesses literacy and numeracy skills that are essential for every child to progress through school and life. Students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 participate in the annual NAPLAN tests in reading, writing, conventions of language (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and numeracy. The assessment provides parents and schools with an understanding of how individual students are performing at the time of the tests. NAPLAN is just one aspect of a school’s assessment and reporting process – it does not replace ongoing assessments made by teachers about student performance.

Our students in years 3 and 5 will be participating in NAPLAN Online this year. The NAPLAN Online test window is 12 to 24 March (weeks 7 and 8, this term). Whilst we encourage all students to participate in NAPLAN there are options for families who do not want their child to participate. This can be done through seeking either an exemption or withdrawal. Please speak to your child’s teacher over the coming weeks if this is something that you want to discuss further.

Prior to the actual test, schools will participate in a national coordinated practice test (CPT) on Tuesday 25 February. The practice test runs for 45 minutes and student performance is not assessed. The purpose of this test is to ensure the technical capacity of the school is satisfactory and to familiarise students with the testing platform.

Please be aware of the privacy collection notice and parent information brochure that have been made available via Audiri. If you have any queries regarding NAPLAN please contact your child’s class teacher or a member of the leadership team.

Facilities News

In January a new set of soccer goals were installed, including levelling out the ground space around them. We are looking forward to this equipment getting lots of use throughout the year!

Assistant Principal - Aileen Clancy

Hello everyone

What a lovely start to the year we have had; lots of new and familiar faces excited to be back at school.

I am now going in to my sixth year at Henley Beach Primary; I have enjoyed getting to know our students, families and staff and working together to ensure the best learning opportunities for our students. Because we have new families to the school, I will give you some information about me.

I migrated from the UK to South Australia in 2013 and I live in Largs North. I taught at another local school for a number of years before coming to Henley and prior to that I was a teacher in Kent, UK. I have held a number of roles in schools with varying degrees of responsibility over this time and do genuinely love teaching.

My teaching philosophy centres around building resilience and responsibility in students. I believe in student agency – teaching students how to have some control over decisions in their learning and environment. The sense of accomplishment and success that children feel when they have triumphed over a challenge – perhaps a difficult task or question - even with a little support from an adult or peer where needed, is far superior to always getting it right first time. Setting the right level of challenge and the optimal conditions for learning is the goal for teachers.

My role here at Henley Beach is to provide curriculum support and leadership to students and teachers across the school. Please feel free to contact me if you have concerns or questions which relate to my areas of responsibility.

I am looking forward to the year ahead where we will focus on our improvement goals in writing and maths. The academic achievement of our students comes from a partnership between home and school; working together is how we optimise this achievement. I will be writing regularly in our newsletter and will provide further tips on how you can support your children at home with their learning.

Please say hello in the morning or afternoon where you will find me on one of the crossing duties on Burford Road.

Wellbeing and Inclusion Leader - Alecia Cailes

My name is Alecia, I am the Wellbeing and Inclusion Leader at HBPS. This is my third year in the role, and fourth year at the school. I teach in our R-2 class on Mondays, and am also the Autism Inclusion Teacher. I feel very lucky to work at our school and be a part of the community! In my spare time, I love baking, sewing, seeing family and friends and walks at the beach.  I have 5 birds: Gibbs, Cupcake, Cookie, Macaron and Frosting.  I enjoy working with families and students, and getting to know new people. In the Wellbeing role, I get to do a lot of different things across the week which is great. Feel free to introduce yourself and say hi if you see me in the yard or out on duty.

Wellbeing and Inclusion Update

This year, our Wellbeing room has moved to a classroom in the primary corridor. The concept of this room has been established over time, with resources for a range of regulation needs and preferences as well as being a space for our student social and emotional wellbeing focus groups to meet.

In term 4 last year, we were gifted a Buddy Bench from the local Rotary Club which has been installed in the playground area. Buddy Benches in schools support students to identify others who may not have anyone to play with, and encourage kindness and interactions among peers.

You may have noticed in the yard that at the end of 2024, a sensory track was installed on the asphalt near the Metcalfe Lawn through some grant funding. There have been additional hopscotch frames installed outside too. Physical movement, particularly through deliberate and controlled movement (each part of the track has instructions), and engagement of our nervous system, supports regulation by providing opportunities to reset and focus. Try out the track next time you are walking by!

We will be continuing our work with the Self-Regulation Service this year, including the possibility of a parent workshop later in the year. This work will focus on increased knowledge around self-regulation and supporting the emotional literacy development of our students.

I look forward to sharing further work around our focus on student wellbeing and inclusion throughout the year.

School Communication

Maintaining positive school and home partnerships is a priority for our staff and to help facilitate this, the app Seesaw is used as a communication tool by teachers to connect with families. Please note that staff will endeavour to check Seesaw regularly (Monday-Friday) and respond to messages at their earliest convenience. Our staff prioritise time spent teaching and building a positive learning environment, and they will often not get the chance to check messages during the school day. If you have an urgent message for your child’s teacher, e.g. after school arrangements such as OSHC, please phone our Front Office staff, who will pass on the message. Please be aware that teachers are encouraged to only check or respond to messages during working hours and not at night or on the weekends.

If you are having any difficulty setting up your Seesaw account please speak to your child’s teacher.

Audiri App

The Audiri app is used as a communication tool for the Principal, administration etc. to publish the newsletter, school calendar events and reminders.

We hope you will find the use of  Audiri and Seesaw helpful and enjoy the opportunity to share in your child’s learning. If you are having any difficulty setting up your account please speak to your child’s teacher for Seesaw and the front office for Audiri.

Attendance Information

Any child who is not in their classroom at 8.50am is considered late and must present to the Front Office to sign in and collect a printed slip to give to their teacher. If your child needs to leave school early, parent/caregivers are asked to come into the Front Office to sign their child out. The Front Office will then call for the student to come to this area to be collected.

The number to text for student absences is 0476 857 370 (please note, the absence text message line should not be used for other purposes). Please text this number by 9am if your child will be late or absent from school and include a reason for their absence. The marking of attendance is a legal document. All absences (regardless of whether it is a couple of minutes late or a day long absence), are marked as unexplained unless parents/carers provide the school with an explanation (via telephone, text or written note). A text message will be sent to parents/caregivers if a child is late or absent without explanation.

Attendance Exemption

If a student will be absent from school for a period greater than 5 days, an Application for Exemption Form must be completed to obtain the principal's approval. These forms are located in the Front Office.

Should you need to get a message to your child during the day, all communication must be made through the Front Office by calling 83562117. We will contact the class teacher to pass urgent messages only. Parents/carers are kindly asked to make personal arrangements before school as much as possible to limit the disruption to classes.  Any general communication to your class teacher should be done via Seesaw or email.

We also ask that if you need to drop anything off during the day (forgotten lunches, musical instruments, homework etc.), please do not go to the classroom, rather drop it to the office and we will arrange for your child to collect it.

Thank you in advance for your cooperation with these matters.

Medical Information

It is Department for Education policy that the guidelines below are followed:

If your child has flu like symptoms or are sick, please keep them at home.

If your child has/had vomited and/or diarrhea they must not come to school for 24 hrs.

If a child presents to class with these symptoms you will be called to pick your child up and take them home.

Sick Certificate

If your child is absent for 3 days you must provide the school with a sick certificate from a doctor.

Health Care Plans

If your child has a medical condition or health care plan, please ensure that you have informed the school. This is to be done annually and if any changes to plans occur throughout the year, please let the school know. All medication must be labelled with a pharmacy label with the child’s name and dose. Please check and ensure the expiry date is current. If your child self-medicates (e.g. asthma puffer), a form needs to be signed by the parent and Principal.

Medication

Medication cannot be administered in an education or care service without written advice on a medication agreement (with the exception of emergency medication for anaphylaxis and asthma).

Medication cannot be administered by education and care staff if:

  • a medication agreement has been modified, overwritten or is illegible.
  • any of the ‘medication rights’ are in doubt.
  • the medication needs to be injected or administered rectally.

All sections of the medication instructions must be completed and match the pharmacy label on the medication.

All requirements listed in the 'authorisation and release' section must be checked and parent or guardian details entered.

The agreement section must be completed by a treating health professional where the medication is:

  • a controlled drug
  • oxygen
  • pain relief (ie paracetamol, ibuprofen) that is needed regularly or administered for more than 72 hours (3 days) in a week.

Allergies

There are students in our school that suffer severe allergies to a variety of food types. The most severe allergic responses can result in anaphylaxis. If this applies to your child’s class a more detailed letter will be sent home.

The school policy is based around “Harm Minimization” which essentially means that we take precautions to reduce the chance of a child contacting or ingesting foods they are allergic to.

Please avoid sending food containing significant amounts of nuts. This includes peanut butter, nutella, nut bars, cakes and slices. Many products including chocolates, muesli bars etc. have a “may contain traces of nuts” warning as a precaution. These are acceptable at school but must not be shared.

Fish, cheese, shellfish and eggs are also identified triggers for children in our classes. For these we request that parents do not send items containing these products for shared meals such as class parties or picnics where they may be eaten without knowledge.

Please see the class teacher for clarification if needed.

Children will be encouraged to practice good hygiene and wash their hands before and after eating.

School Uniform

The wearing of the school uniform by all students is school policy, approved by Governing Council. The uniform is available from Westside Schoolwear, Shop 6, Falkirk Avenue, Seaton. There are many advantages, for both parents and the children, in wearing a school uniform. In particular it gives children a sense of belonging and develops pride in the school as well as being cheaper, functional and non-competitive in terms of fashion.

Change of Clothes

Spills and accidents can happen at school, please consider providing a spare set of clothes in your child's bag to cover them in the instance of an accident or wet weather. We only have a limited supply in the front office.

SAPSASA Overview

We are committed to providing a diverse range of sporting opportunities for our students to complement the current Physical Education program. Below is an overview of the sports that students will have the opportunity to participate in this year (depending on their grade level); please note that these sports are separate to the out of hours sports competitions, and while these are the planned sports, there may be some changes throughout the year.

All information below is as accurate as possible given the information available from SAPSASA at this stage of the year.  There are also opportunities in Diving and Mountain Biking.  These are on the School Sport SA website, as is information about trials for state representation at National competitions in certain sports.

Information about the sports opportunities offered through school is provided directly to each class and students can then nominate their initial expressions of interest.  Follow up information is then distributed via notes and Seesaw.  Please be aware that an expression of interest is not a guarantee of participation as many of these sports have trial sessions, some within school, some at the district level and some that involve both school and district.

Alongside the above formal processes, a further selection criteria for children’s participation in school sport is their behaviour at school. At Henley Beach Primary School, we believe that respectful and positive behaviour are essential when representing the school, therefore, students are expected to demonstrate responsibility, teamwork, and respect in all aspects of their school life. Families will be contacted by a member of staff if a student is displaying behaviours that do not align with these expectations.

Once event dates have been confirmed, parent and carer volunteer help (transport, supervision) for these activities is often required and welcomed. Any requests for help will be made closer to the timing of each sport.

Along with the competitions below we will also be looking to partner with Henley High School which will involve students from their sporting program visiting our school to run coaching sessions for students.

As a volunteer you will also require a Working with Children Check (WWCC) screening clearance and complete an online Responding to Risks of Harm, Abuse and Neglect (RRHAN-EC) course. Volunteering cannot commence unless these aspects have been completed.

It is the responsibility of the volunteer to keep these documents up to date so please check expiry dates on clearances once issued.

Our environment has a major focus on learning through play, allowing our children to develop their social skills, build and develop an identity, and learn to engage in an environment with a range of different age groups.

Please take the time to browse the school's website to view our Parent Handbook as it is has all the necessary information regarding operating hours, fees, Childcare Subsidy, booking and cancellation processes, vacation care information and drop off/pick up information.

This is also where you will find the OSHC enrolment form.

Welcome back, students! We hope you had a wonderful holiday and are ready for an exciting year ahead. Our canteen team is thrilled to be back and ready to serve you delicious and nutritious meals. We’ve got some exciting updates and changes to share! We’ve been busy in the kitchen over the break and are excited to introduce some new menu items this term. Keep an eye out for our updated menu, which will be available on QKR and at the canteen. To ensure we can continue providing high-quality meals and keep the canteen running smoothly, we’ve made some adjustments to our prices. We appreciate your understanding and support as we work to keep the canteen sustainable.

**We Need Volunteers** Our canteen relies on the support of our wonderful volunteers, and we need your help more than ever! Whether you can spare an hour or a whole morning, any time you can give is greatly appreciated. Volunteering is a great way to get involved in the school community and support our students. We’re also looking for volunteers to help us trial a new recess menu on Thursdays from 9:00 AM to 10:30 AM. This exciting trial can only go ahead if we have enough helpers, so please let us know if you’re available. If you’re interested in volunteering, please contact the canteen team at Canteen.Canteen878@schools.sa.edu. To celebrate Valentine’s Day, we’ll be offering special over-the-counter treats during Week 3. Keep an eye out for our sweet surprises – they’re sure to be a hit with the kids! We’re looking forward to a fantastic year ahead. If you have any questions, or suggestions, please don’t hesitate to reach out. Community Notice:

Dear neighbour/local community member,

It is a requirement of the Department for Education to practice both an Evacuation and Invacuation (lockdown drills) every term to ensure our emergency management procedures remain current. For a site of multiple buildings and many students and staff, this involves a very strategic operation and the use of loud external announcements using Australian Standard sirens.

Local Council News

A message from the Charles Sturt Council:

The City of Charles Sturt has implemented comprehensive traffic management and parking schemes in the streets surrounding the schools within our community to help make it a safe place for children and help manage the traffic flow during peak periods. They will soon commence their School Safety inspections program for 2025 and will be conducting patrols at schools within the Charles Sturt area throughout the year.

In the course of our previous year’s inspections, they identified some common parking issues and have designed a brochure which covers some of the day to day parking issues around schools.  Please refer to the brochure that provides a summary of this area.
