Principal's Message

Dear Community

We have almost made it to the end of another year here at Scarborough PS, another one that has been filled with many challenges big and small. This time however, we can see the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow – our amazing new classrooms which we will be moving into at the start of next year! We have had to share our space with a construction site, change our recess and lunch time structures and be creative with more children in less space at recess and lunchtimes. However, we have worked through these challenges as we always do at Scarborough – together. Because of this, we have still managed to provide a fantastic range of amazing learning opportunities and experiences for all our students.

Our staff work tirelessly to ensure that they are providing excellence in curriculum content and delivery in our classrooms each day, but beyond this, they also put a lot of thought and effort into creating broader, experiences for our students. It has been great to be able to properly embrace incursion and excursion opportunities again. Our students got to experience the Perth Zoo, the WA Museum, Brownes Dairy, Flora Terrace Museum and a Peter Coombes concert. Our Choir and Taiko drummers were also out and about over the year, entertaining people at the Osborne Park Show, the City to Surf, the Regent Gardens aged care villiage and the Massed Choir festival. My thanks extend beyond just teaching staff who are present in classrooms each day, but to all staff including our Chaplain, cleaners, gardeners, office staff, library assistants and everyone else in between. We all truly work as a team to provide the best we can for our students. Everybody’s input in invaluable. So thank you!

I’d also like to acknowledge our students and the amazing efforts that they have put in this year. Their resilience and flexibility during a time where changes have been happening weekly and they have had to coexist in a small outside area has been outstanding. This time each year I get to do one of the favourite parts of my job, which is reading through all of our student’s reports. I genuinely enjoy reading about the progress that has been made by everyone, from our kindy’s who have been discovering sounds, letters, numbers and the joys of learning to navigate a classroom environment with lots of new friends, to our Year 6 students who have been nurtured over the years and developed both academically, socially and emotionally to ensure they are ready for the adventures that high school holds for them. Well done everybody!

Finally, to our Scarborough Primary School community, you are amazing. You are engaged, positive and proactive and have been so supportive as we have rolled with the punches this year. We appreciate the support that you give us in doing the best for your children; everything from the tireless efforts of our P&C and Board, to everyone who has volunteered their time in classrooms and throughout the school, to the way you have engaged with our classroom teachers to ensure the best for your children. You inspire us to strive to do our best every day and are such an important part of our cultural fabric.

On that note, I’d like to wish you all a safe, relaxing and enjoyable holiday break and look forward to seeing you all again in 2024.

With all of that said, we still have a lot happening in the last two weeks of term, so keep reading for an outline.

This week Room 2 and 5 enjoyed their end of year events. Congratulations to all of the award winners. Please keep an eye out for information from other class teachers regarding details and timings of their Award Presentations.

As a final reminder, I just wanted to reiterate the information the was sent out in an Audiri post yesterday:

  • The City of Stirling have blocked off the laneway with Road Closed signs in the short term whilst longer term decisions are being considered.
  • Please use an alternative route for the remainder of the year

Voluntary Contributions 2024

The Scarborough Primary School Board has endorsed the schedule of Contributions and Charges for 2024. The schedule is broken into four sections and will allow you to calculate all costs that may be incurred throughout the school year.

The total amount of contributions parents/caregivers are being asked to pay has been set at $60.00 per student which is in line with the School Education Regulations 2000.

Money collected will be used to supplement school expenditure in the curriculum learning areas. While the contributions are voluntary, the quality of our teaching and learning program will be maximised when each family makes its contribution to the cost of supplementing funding gained from other sources, including the State and Commonwealth governments. Your family’s contribution will go directly towards the purchase of resources needed in the provision of the learning program activities.

A copy of the Voluntary Contributions for 2024 can be located here - Voluntary Contributions 2024 or via the school website. They will be invoiced Term 1 2024.

Salvation Army Christmas Appeal

We all know Christmas is a time for joy. But for those doing it tough – it is often challenging, heart breaking and isolating. Last Christmas, The Salvation Army provided around over 64,000 hampers as well as 26,000 gifts to individuals and families in need. As cost of living increases continue to impact communities across the country, our support is more important now than ever. Scarborough PS is holding its annual food and gift drive again this year to help The Salvation Army make sure no one is left in need this festive season.

Please donate new items only and place them unwrapped under the Christmas tree in the front office. We will be collecting items from now until the last Tuesday of term. Any queries, please see the office, or email Chaplain Nikki on nicola.harvey@education.wa.edu.au

P&C News

Hello SPS families

Last Friday, the P&C provided icy poles for each student as a thank you to everybody for their contribution to our school this year. This was timely with the recent heatwave.

We held a successful and productive planning afternoon last weekend, with lots of exciting things to look forward to in 2024, including a student disco, a bingo night, a colour run and other awesome fundraisers and events!

We are on the lookout for a P&C Representative from each year level for next year, to circulate information from the P&C and the school to the wider parent community. If this is something you’d be interested in, or any other volunteer opportunities, please get in touch.

SAVE THE DATE FOR 2024

We will be holding a P&C Sundowner at Skol on Wednesday the 7th of February from 6:30pm for those interested to learn more about what we do and how to get involved. All welcome, it would be great to see some new faces!

NEXT MEETING

Our next meeting will be on the 20th of February 2024 at 6:30pm in the library. We will hold a General Meeting, followed by our AGM in which all committee positions will be vacant. If you would like a nomination form for any of the positions, or some more information, please send us an email.

If you would like to be added to our mailing list to receive the agenda and minutes for our meetings, or have a suggestion, send us an email! scarboroughprimarypc@gmail.com

CANTEEN

We have a need for some new volunteers in the canteen for 2024. You would be required to help a couple of Friday mornings each term from 9:30 am - 11:30 am and Laura, our wonderful Canteen Leader, can show you the ropes. The best part is, on your volunteer days, your children will get a free lunch order! If you would like to help out, please get in contact with Laura or Teneke (Canteen Coordinator), or email the P&C.

Please note that all canteen orders need to be placed via QuickCliq prior to 8:30 am on Friday. If you forget to order by 8:30 am, please organise your child’s lunch from home or elsewhere.

ENTERTAINMENT BOOK

We continue to fundraise through the Entertainment Book. When you purchase the Entertainment Book, a portion will go to the P&C.

Order your membership here https://www.entertainment.com.au/orderbooks/86y129

CONTAINERS FOR CHANGE

We have received a large number of green hessian Containers for Change bags. If you would like one for your family, please collect one from the front office. Happy collecting!

We will continue to fundraise through the Containers for Change initiative. The Containers for Change bins can be found at the school entry at Hinderwell Street near the Room 9 Heritage Building. Keep on bringing those empty cans and bottles to support the P&C!

Alternatively, if you wish to donate at a refund point of your choosing you can quote our Scheme ID C10284773. If you prefer to attend a Reverse Vending Machine location, please use the barcode at the top of the P&C news. This may be your preference if you have a larger donation and be rest assured that the money goes back to the P&C.
