Rozelle Public School Newsletter

TERM ONE WEEK TEN

FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Rozelle is a place where Aboriginal children learned, played and celebrated their culture for thousands of years on this beautiful, natural land. As we learn, play and celebrate together on this land, we honour the Wangal people of the Eora nation and pay our respects to elders both past, present and emerging.

As we come to the end of Term One, I would like to take this opportunity to reflect on our achievements, progress and the ongoing support and engagement from the Rozelle school community.

Firstly, I want to express my appreciation to all students and staff for their commitment and dedication to learning this term. School routines have been established and all extra-curricular activities are well underway. Our new Kindergarten cohort have been especially impressive in the way they have settled into daily routines, engaged in their learning and successfully navigated the school environment.

Our students continue to work towards their educational goals and have engaged in sports, arts and various other programs offered this term with enthusiasm. They have consistently acquired skills and confidence both academically and socially. Our students have demonstrated a strong sense of responsibility, respect, and kindness towards one another. This was particularly evident on the recent Stage Three overnight excursions to Canberra (Year Six) and Stanwell Tops (Year Five).  Well done to all students for your outstanding behaviour and cooperation on both excursions.

I would like to acknowledge our teaching and non-teaching staff for working tirelessly across the term to set our students up for a successful year. This starts with our hardworking administration team who support staff, students and parents to ensure effective communication of all school programs and events.

Our teachers continue to deliver high quality teaching programs, going above and beyond to support our students' success. Over the past fortnight, most parents took the opportunity to meet with their child’s teacher, to discuss Term One progress. These important conversations help build on the strong partnership between home and school.

Looking ahead to the next term, we will use insights gained from reflecting on the achievement of both individuals and teams and set clear goals for the next term based on identified areas for improvement and opportunities for growth.

I would like to wish all our families an enjoyable Term One break and to thank our parents and staff for their ongoing support and partnership. I am proud of what we have achieved this term and I am confident this will continue throughout the year. I look forward to the term ahead.

PARENT TEACHER INTERVIEWS

Over the past few weeks’ most parents attended the parent teacher interviews. On all reports communication between our educators and parents was extremely positive and informative. This valued and essential process in receiving and providing progress reports on a child's academic and personal development is important in setting learning goals for the terms ahead. If you were unable to attend, please contact the school and the class teacher will facilitate a parent-teacher interview in the coming week or early in Term Two.

EASTER HAT PARADE

One of our most memorable school events must be our recent Easter Hat Parade. It was a delightful celebration of joy, creativity and community spirit with everyone cheering and acknowledging the children’s colourful and imaginative creations as they paraded along Darling Street for all our community to enjoy. It was a very exciting event and the hats could only be described as masterpieces! I must congratulate the children on their hard work, parents for their support in helping your children prepare for the parade and staff who are involved in the organisation in making these special events a huge success and Rozelle Public School so special.

YEAR 5 CAMP - STANWELL (WAS) TOPS

I am proud of everyone who contributed to making the Year 5 camp to Stanwell Tops this week such a success. On Wednesday, our students embarked on their adventure with enthusiasm, a positive attitude and a lot of excitement. Throughout the week, they embraced new experiences; they made and flew kites, played survivor, rock climbed, go-carted and conquered the giant swing embracing all challenges with maturity and adaptability. They demonstrated individual growth and increased confidence in navigating through the obstacles, they stretched their resilience, empathy and teamwork muscles and had a tonne of fun along the way. Thank you to Ms Gubb for her planning and for organising such a fun and memorable experience. Ms Taylor, Ms Singleton, Ms Genion and Ms Tohver for their tireless efforts and commitment to the wellbeing of all our students at camp. Thank you also to our supportive parents and guardians for your preparation and contribution to making this camp a success. I believe our kids will reflect and share lots of their experiences for a long time to come!

ANZAC DAY ASSEMBLY - FRIDAY 12 APRIL

We are commemorating Anzac Day on Friday 12 April from 9am in the school hall. Our Stage 2 and 3 Choir will be performing along with the School Band. If any parents, carers or community members would like to attend in uniform, we would love to have you join us for this important occasion.

OPPORTUNITY CLASS FOR APPLICATIONS FOR STUDENTS IN YEAR 5 2025

Opportunity classes cater for highly achieving academically gifted students. These classes help gifted and talented students to learn by grouping them with other gifted and talented students, teaching them in specialised ways and providing educational materials at the appropriate level.

Applications for opportunity class placement are considered mainly on the combined results of the Opportunity Class Placement Test and school assessments. Please note the following dates. Parents and carers must apply online from now up until Monday 20 May.

Please visit the website for further information about the application process and dateshttps://shsoc.education.nsw.gov.au/

COMPUTER BASED TEST PILOT FOR SELECTIVE HIGH SCHOOL AND OPPORTUNITY CLASS PLACEMENT TESTS

You may have heard that the selective high school and opportunity class placement tests will become computer-based tests in 2025. The Department of Education is calling for students to participate in a pilot of the computer-based placement tests to help them prepare for this change. It’s free and open to students in Year 3 to sit the pilot opportunity class placement test and students in Year 5 to sit the pilot selective high school placement test. The pilot will be held on Saturday 22 June 2024 at test centres in Sydney, Newcastle and Bathurst. Parents of eligible students are invited to submit an expression of interest for their child to participate in the pilot at International Convention Centre, Sydney.

Expressions of interest are open between 26 March – 12 April 2024.

This is a good opportunity for students to take a practice test ahead of the computer-based placement tests in 2025. Computers will be provided at the pilot test venues for all participating students. Students cannot use their own personal computers. As this is a pilot of the computer-based tests participating will not result in placement in a selective high school or opportunity class.

The goal of the class is for the children to have fun and enjoy making music! Cost is $160 per term. If your child is in Years K-2 and interested in joining percussion group next term, please contact matthew.roe3@det.nsw.edu.au

CREATE A PROFILE NOW FOR THE COLOUR RUN!

It's really quick and easy to create a fundraising profile for your child - just go to funrun.com.au

The Colour Run will be held this Thursday 11 April from 1.30pm at school. We recommend the kids wearing a white or plain light coloured shirt to gain the most of the chalk effect on the day.

If you'd like to watch, parents are more than welcome to attend and watch at the tiger turf.

Thank you to all the parents who have volunteered for this exciting event.

COLOUR FUN RUN PRIZE OPTION:

We are aware that parents may not wish for their children to win prizes as part of the fundraising. As this is a non-negotiable part of the set up from the 3rd party operator the P&C have come up with an alternative. You can elect to donate your child’s prizes to charity for the less fortunate. The P&C will vote on the charity at the next meeting and welcome anyone to come along and propose a charity. Membership is only $1 for the year!

If you would like to donate your child’s prize(s) to charity please fill in the form here: https://forms.gle/8QtwcE1M1BaT5MDt6

RPS P&C INVITES YOU TO SHARE YOUR FEEDBACK

RPS P&C has been invited to the Portfolio Committee No. 6 – Transport and the Arts where the RPS P&C will be giving evidence at a hearing for the inquiry into the impact of the Rozelle Interchange.

Please add your comments on the form (link below) against any of the items where you have feedback - it's free text and you can write in dot points or paragraphs. You do not have to respond to every question, only where you wish to comment.

Please provide your comments by COB Sunday 7 April.
