Rozelle Public School Newsletter

TERM TWO WEEK TWO

FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Rozelle is a place where Aboriginal children learned, played and celebrated their culture for thousands of years on this beautiful, natural land. As we learn, play and celebrate together on this land, we honour the Wangal people of the Eora nation and pay our respects to elders both past, present and emerging.

Welcome back to Term Two. The first fortnight of the term has certainly been a busy time for our students and teachers who have returned energised and ready to engage in all teaching and learning programs as well as the extra curricula.

Our teachers had the opportunity to engage in a day of professional learning around the new English and Mathematics syllabus on the School Development Day and are working hard to apply the new strategies, improve practice and outcomes for the students.

We had to postpone our Cross Country Carnival to Week 3 on Wednesday May 15 due to the wet weather. We hope to see parents come down to the oval to enjoy the day.

SCHOOL PHOTOGRAPHS

School photos (class, individual and family photos) are scheduled for Monday 3 June and Thursday 6 June 2024. Family photos are taken only for students that attend Rozelle Public School or preschool.

OPPORTUNITY CLASS FOR APPLICATIONS FOR STUDENTS IN YEAR 5 2025

Opportunity classes cater for highly achieving academically gifted students. These classes help gifted and talented students to learn by grouping them with other gifted and talented students, teaching them in specialised ways and providing educational materials at the appropriate level. Applications for opportunity class placement are considered on the results of the Opportunity Class Placement Test. School assessment results are not required by the selection committee. Students who wish to be considered for placement are required to sit the Opportunity Class Placement Test on Thursday 1 August 2024.

How to apply

  • Parents/carers apply online before Monday 20 May 2024 at: www.education.nsw.gov.au/oc
  • You must use your own email address and not one belonging to your child.
  • You must submit only one application for each child.
  • No late applications will be accepted unless there are serious and well-documented extenuating circumstances.

PARENT VOLUNTEERS

Helping out at school is a great way to get involved in your child’s education as well as get to know the staff and other parents and carers.

You can help by:

  • listening to children read in the classroom
  • volunteering on sports days
  • helping supervise excursions
  • getting involved in fundraising activities
  • joining school committees.

Parent volunteers are not required to have a Working With Children's Number, however they are required to fill in a 'Declaration for Child-Related Workers' Form, as well as present one form of government-issued photo ID showing full name, date of birth and current address to be sighted and photocopied at the school office.

All parent volunteers attending during the school day will need to sign in and out from the school office please.

PRESCHOOL 2025 ENROLMENT

Applications for enrolment into the preschool program have now opened. All the necessary information and application forms are available on the school website at https://rozelle-p.schools.nsw.gov.au/preschool/the-application-process.html or from the school office. Children are eligible for enrolment in preschool classes from the beginning of the school year if they turn four years of age before July 31 of that year. Applications close at 3pm on Friday 28 June 2024.

There is no priority for the order in which enrolments are received by the office. The Preschool Placement panel, consisting of the Principal, the President of the P&C and one of our preschool teachers, considers all applications in accordance with the priorities of the Department of Education and Communities' Preschool Enrolment Policy and the Rozelle Public School Preschool Enrolment and Fee Policy.

HEALTH ALERT - IMPETIGO VIRUS

We've had some cases of impetigo at RPS lately, so we thought we'd share some extra information to help you spot it and stop the spread of it.

How can people avoid spreading impetigo?

To avoid spreading impetigo:

  • keep sores clean and covered with a waterproof dressing until they have healed. This stops people from touching or scratching them
  • discard used dressings as soon as they are taken off
  • wash your hands with soap and running water for 20 seconds after touching or cleaning sores and after handling contaminated objects such as dressings, sheets and towels
  • avoid sharing clothes, towels or bed sheets with anyone who has impetigo
  • avoid bathing children in the same bathwater if any child has impetigo
  • wash clothes, sheets and towels used by someone with impetigo every day, ideally in hot water
  • keep your child home from school, childcare and other group settings until at least 24 hours of antibiotic treatment has started. All sores on exposed skin should be covered when returning to usual activities such as school.

MUSIC & CREATIVE ARTS PROGRAM

RPS BAND NEWS

Week one saw the electric piano in the band room receive some much needed attention with all the piano keys now replaced. At Monday's assembly the RPS junior & senior band gave a thoroughly enjoyable performance of Katie Perry's "Firework" and Train's "Hey, Soul Sister" despite less than a week of rehearsal time. Amazing turnaround! Well done to all the students involved and of course to Helen for her dedication in bringing it all together.

Last Wednesday marked the inaugural rehearsal session for our 2024 Training Band. Helen's feedback was that attendance was good, everyone was well behaved and confidence levels were high! Hopefully they will be ready to perform at assembly themselves in the not-too-distant future. Next performances for our Junior & Senior bands are as follows:

  • Week 4 - 2:15PM Monday 20 May Assembly - Junior/Senior Band
  • Week 8 - 2:15PM Monday 17 June Assembly - Junior/Senior Band

The goal of the class is for the children to have fun and enjoy making music! Cost is $160 per term. If your child is in Years K-2 and interested in joining percussion group next term, please contact matthew.roe3@det.nsw.edu.au

RPS STRINGS PROGRAM

Tanya Swinton is now running our strings program. Tanya is currently studying at the Sydney Con and is a very accomplished musician.
