A FEW WORDS FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Dear families,

This week, we had the privilege of hosting leaders and staff from schools across the Noarlunga Portfolio’s Aboriginal Learner Network to share our journey towards creating a culturally responsive and inclusive learning environment. It was a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the work we have undertaken as a school, as well as the challenges and learning opportunities that continue to guide us forward.

Our visitors were welcomed with a powerful and inspiring Acknowledgement of Country by Nick Marks, which recognised the uniqueness of our school environment and invited connection and personal reflection.

Students from Reception to Year 6 proudly showcased their cultural learning and classroom experiences. It was heartening to witness the pride our students have in their cultural learning and their confidence in sharing their knowledge.

Over the past few years, our school has made significant progress in the visibility of Aboriginal culture. This journey began with ensuring culture is visible through initiatives such as our mural, sports day team names and sports tops, and the creation of welcoming classroom spaces that reflect and celebrate Aboriginal culture.

Equally important has been the commitment of our staff, and their confidence and willingness to authentically embed Aboriginal perspectives within teaching and learning.

Today, our learning can be seen throughout our classrooms in displays, storytelling, song, artwork and learning experiences that encourage curiosity, understanding and respect. While we are proud of how far we have come, we also recognise that this is an ongoing journey. We remain committed to listening, learning and growing together as a school community.

As we continue, we look forward to strengthening our connections with families and walking alongside one another to deepen our understanding of Aboriginal culture and create an environment where every child and family feels safe, respected and valued.

I would like to sincerely acknowledge Nick Marks and Katrina Leucuta for the way they shared our story with visitors. Their willingness to speak with vulnerability, honesty and authenticity reflected the heart of this work. I am reminded that meaningful change is built through reflection, courage and a commitment to continuous improvement.

I am incredibly proud of the journey our school community is on and grateful to all staff, students and families who continue to contribute to making HCEPS a place where everyone feels a sense of belonging.

Staff Farewell

I would like to share with our community that Katrina Leucuta will be leaving HCEPS on Monday 15 June after accepting a position as Wellbeing Leader at Mount Compass Area School for the next three years.

During her time with us, Katrina has made a significant and lasting contribution to our school community through her leadership of, and commitment to student wellbeing. She has played an integral role in supporting students, staff and families, ensuring that wellbeing remains at the heart of all that we do. You have seen the very significant leadership of wellbeing initiatives that Katrina has implemented in her time with us. Her genuine care for others, combined with her calm, empathetic and professional approach, has been an asset to our school.

While we will certainly miss Katrina's presence, good humour and expertise, I have no doubt that Katrina will make the same positive difference in her new role. Please join me in thanking Katrina for her outstanding contribution to our school. Mount Compass Area School is indeed very fortunate.

Have a happy and safe long weekend

I trust that the long weekend gives you the chance to rest up and enjoy some additional time with family and friends. See you all on Wednesday, after the student free day.

With regards

Matthew Chapman

Principal

A FEW WORDS FROM THE DEPUTY PRINCIPAL

Dear HCEPS Community

It is hard to believe we are already past the halfway point of Term 2. As we head into the second half of the term, it has been wonderful to see students continuing to engage in their learning, demonstrate resilience and make progress towards their goals.

Understanding the Nationally Consistent Collection of Data (NCCD)

Each year, all Australian schools participate in the Nationally Consistent Collection of Data (NCCD). The NCCD helps schools, education systems and governments better understand the needs of students with disability and ensure they receive the support they need to access and participate in education on the same basis as their peers.

The NCCD is not a test for students and does not involve any additional assessments. Instead, schools collect information about the adjustments already being provided to support students in their learning and participation at school.

Adjustments can include a wide range of supports such as:

  • Modified learning programs and differentiated teaching
  • Additional support from teachers and support staff
  • Assistive technology or specialised equipment
  • Social, emotional and behavioural supports
  • Environmental adjustments that improve access to learning

Teachers and leaders work together to review evidence collected throughout the year, including classroom observations, student work samples, assessment data, learning plans, specialist reports and records of adjustments. This information helps schools identify the level of support being provided and ensures students receive appropriate assistance to meet their individual needs.

The NCCD recognises that every student is unique and that some students may require adjustments to access learning successfully. The information collected helps schools continue to strengthen inclusive practices and plan for the support students need to thrive.

English as an Additional Language or Dialect

At Hallett Cove East Primary School, we recognise and celebrate the value of being an EALD (English as an Additional Language or Dialect) learner.

Being an EALD learner is a valuable asset that brings rich languages, cultures and experiences into our school community. Speaking more than one language helps children develop strong communication and thinking skills, and we encourage families to continue using and celebrating their home language. Attached are brochures titled Home Languages Matter. If your child speaks a main language other than English at home, we encourage you to speak with your child’s classroom teacher or the front office staff so we can work together to best support your child’s learning and language development. Identifying students as speaking another main language at home helps us provide appropriate support and celebrate the rich diversity within our school community.

Kind regards,

Robyn Physick

A FEW WORDS FROM OUR STUDENT WELLBEING LEADER

Thank you and Farewell

As shared during assembly today, I will be leaving Hallett Cove East Primary School in Week 8 after accepting a Student Wellbeing Leader position at Mount Compass Area School. My final day at HCEPS will be Monday 15th June.

Over the past year, I have absolutely loved being part of the HCEPS community and feel very grateful to have worked alongside such wonderful students, staff and families.

It has been a privilege to support student wellbeing across the school through 1:1 mentoring, wellbeing programs, student groups, lunchtime clubs, assemblies and whole-school initiatives. There are so many special memories and experiences that I will take with me.

I welcome Ellie Burford back as she returns from leave and resumes the Student Wellbeing Leader role. Over the next week, Ellie and I will work closely together to ensure a smooth transition and continuity of support for students and families.

Thank you again to the school community for your kindness, support and encouragement throughout my time at Hallett Cove East Primary School. I wish everyone all the very best and look forward to hearing about all the amazing things happening at HCEPS in the future.

Wishing you all the very best,

Katrina Leucuta

STUDENT WELLBEING LEADER  (Monday, Tuesday & Wednesday)

Meet Our Official HCEPS Mascots!

Today at assembly, students were officially introduced to our HCEPS school mascots and their names through a special GEM TV presentation created by our Student Wellbeing Leaders.

Earlier this term, students designed mascots to represent our school values. Following a whole-school naming competition and community voting process, our mascots have now officially come to life!

Throughout the presentation, students learned more about each mascot, what they represent and how they will become part of everyday life at HCEPS. Our Student Wellbeing Leaders also shared some exciting ideas for how the mascots may be used across the school, including: • wellbeing lessons • assemblies • social stories • classroom posters • celebrations and awards • and special mascot appearances!

Over the coming weeks, you will notice the new mascot values posters now being displayed across learning spaces around the school!

A huge thank you to every student who participated in both the mascot design and naming competitions. It has been wonderful to see students helping bring our school values to life through creativity, leadership and student voice.

SAPSASA News

Over the past few weeks, several of our students have represented our school community in various State and National sporting competitions.

Noah proudly represented Southern Valley at the Boys Football State Carnival, competing against strong opposition and demonstrating excellent sportsmanship. Harry participated in the BMX National Championships held in Melbourne, an outstanding effort to compete against the top riders in Australia!

Alex was selected to play in the local golf trials; unfortunately, the event was postponed due to inclement weather. We look forward to seeing Alex compete when the trials are rescheduled.

Yesterday Kaden, Cruz, Ashton, Marley, Ebony, Grace, Maddie I, and Zahlia braved cold and muddy conditions to compete in the State Cross Country Championships at Oakbank Racecourse. Their determination in trying conditions was great.

Congratulations to all students on their efforts and achievements. We are very proud of you all.
