Dear families,
This week, we had the privilege of hosting leaders and staff from schools across the Noarlunga Portfolio’s Aboriginal Learner Network to share our journey towards creating a culturally responsive and inclusive learning environment. It was a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the work we have undertaken as a school, as well as the challenges and learning opportunities that continue to guide us forward.
Our visitors were welcomed with a powerful and inspiring Acknowledgement of Country by Nick Marks, which recognised the uniqueness of our school environment and invited connection and personal reflection.
Students from Reception to Year 6 proudly showcased their cultural learning and classroom experiences. It was heartening to witness the pride our students have in their cultural learning and their confidence in sharing their knowledge.
Over the past few years, our school has made significant progress in the visibility of Aboriginal culture. This journey began with ensuring culture is visible through initiatives such as our mural, sports day team names and sports tops, and the creation of welcoming classroom spaces that reflect and celebrate Aboriginal culture.
Equally important has been the commitment of our staff, and their confidence and willingness to authentically embed Aboriginal perspectives within teaching and learning.
Today, our learning can be seen throughout our classrooms in displays, storytelling, song, artwork and learning experiences that encourage curiosity, understanding and respect. While we are proud of how far we have come, we also recognise that this is an ongoing journey. We remain committed to listening, learning and growing together as a school community.
As we continue, we look forward to strengthening our connections with families and walking alongside one another to deepen our understanding of Aboriginal culture and create an environment where every child and family feels safe, respected and valued.
I would like to sincerely acknowledge Nick Marks and Katrina Leucuta for the way they shared our story with visitors. Their willingness to speak with vulnerability, honesty and authenticity reflected the heart of this work. I am reminded that meaningful change is built through reflection, courage and a commitment to continuous improvement.
I am incredibly proud of the journey our school community is on and grateful to all staff, students and families who continue to contribute to making HCEPS a place where everyone feels a sense of belonging.
Staff Farewell
I would like to share with our community that Katrina Leucuta will be leaving HCEPS on Monday 15 June after accepting a position as Wellbeing Leader at Mount Compass Area School for the next three years.
During her time with us, Katrina has made a significant and lasting contribution to our school community through her leadership of, and commitment to student wellbeing. She has played an integral role in supporting students, staff and families, ensuring that wellbeing remains at the heart of all that we do. You have seen the very significant leadership of wellbeing initiatives that Katrina has implemented in her time with us. Her genuine care for others, combined with her calm, empathetic and professional approach, has been an asset to our school.
While we will certainly miss Katrina's presence, good humour and expertise, I have no doubt that Katrina will make the same positive difference in her new role. Please join me in thanking Katrina for her outstanding contribution to our school. Mount Compass Area School is indeed very fortunate.
Have a happy and safe long weekend
I trust that the long weekend gives you the chance to rest up and enjoy some additional time with family and friends. See you all on Wednesday, after the student free day.
With regards
Matthew Chapman
