2024 Term 3 Issue #9

From the Principal

Dear families & friends

As we start the last week of term 3 everyone is getting ready for learning expo and getting excited for the upcoming holidays. We have a few things on this week so make sure you check the week 10 agenda sent out last week and later in the newsletter to keep track of the week!

PAT (Progressive Acheivement Testing)

Over the last couple of weeks all students in year 1 to 6 have been undertaking our annual PAT assessments in reading comprehension and Mathematics. These are the most useful assessments for teachers as we have instant results and feedback about how students have improved over the year and where we need to focus our learning program as we plan forward. We have been very pleased to see the progress made by students over the year and have started sharing some of this with students directly. We still have a handful of students that need to complete the testing this week before we look at the data as a whole.

EMS

We have now moved over to the new EMS (Electronic Management System). It has been a lot of training, meetings and work load, in particular for Gillian, over the last few weeks.

We can see there will be many things that will be streamlined on the new system and it is much more user friendly than the older system, however there is bit more to do as we learn to do everything in a different way and work through any teething problems.

Playgroup

We have had strong interest already with the reopening of our playgroup, with several families both our own families and local families that have seen advertising making queries and many already committed to attending. We are excited to be able to provide this opportunity to our local families again starting in Week 1 next term every Thursday from 9 to 10.30am.

If you have any family or friends with children aged 0 to 4 make sure you let them know to come along and have some fun and get to know other local families.

We look forward to seeing many of you over the week and wish you all a safe holiday. Term 4 starts on Monday 14th October, please see some important dates for term 4 at the end of the newsletter.

Cheers Skye 😊

Note from Gillian

Currently school is going through a major data change and all Administration and Finance programs are changing to EMS (Education Management System). So, I ask for your patience as everything I have been doing for 22 years has changed.

It is vital that email addresses are kept up to date as all receipts will now be automatically emailed to you. Attendance will be recorded differently so it is very important that you report attendance via the APP Audiri in the Attendance tile rather than emailing, texting the mobile phone or through Seesaw.

Once the program is up and running there may be an automatic email or SMS system but we will keep you updated.

So if I’m looking a bit confused its probably because I am J

I am excited about the positive changes that have been made.

Thank you

Gillian

Soccer Teams

Well done to all of our soccer teams on their teamwork and persistence over the season. The improvement from the beginning to end of the season was amazing and it was great to see the students enjoying themselves at training and during games. A big thank you to all of those parents and volunteers that assisted with any of the teams over the year. Please see below some photos of our Under 12's team, who won the Cosimo Marrone Perpetual Trophy in the Wednesday night EZPSSA competition.

Primary

Hi From Steve's P1 Class

In P1 we have been working on measurement for our maths studies, and have incorporated some mapping skills into the program as well. We looked at determining the perimeter of the security fencing around the school, and how much it would cost to paint the fence. As a writing exercise we wrote a letter to the Principal of the school (Skye) to explain how we got to our answer and the reasoning involved in it.

We also introduced some coding and the formation of algorithms into the classroom, through the use of some cute little critters called BeeBots, thanks to Laura for borrowing them from Adelaide University. We had fun trying to make the BeeBots do various challenges, as well as teaching the juniors how to use them.

In addition, we are finishing up on the narrative writing this week also, with a number tasks revolving around various prompts for short writing challenges.

News from Laura's Class

This week, in our Berry Street lessons we have been writing letters to people in our lives to show our gratitude. Showing gratitude helps us to look for things we don't always see in other people and to say thanks for having them in our lives. Thomas (P2)

Juniors

Hello from Emma's Juniors

In math, J2 has been learning to use the Bee-Bots to explore locations, directions and positions on maps. Students have been designing simple algorithms to program the Bee-Bots to move from one spot to another. For example, A=X, >, V, >, >, GO. We are also learning to use language such as left turn, right turn, forward, backwards, pause, stop and go.

Juniper's Juniors

The Junior primary students have been exploring our inquiry topic 'Stories to Success'.  We have been looking at character traits, and how they help us with goals. We have also been using natural materials to depict a story that has a journey in it. Now the weather is warming up we have been doing some lessons outside. We even had a Kalta visit us.

Art and HPE

Visual Arts with Camille

Junior Primary students have started a collaborative artwork depicting character traits in our school community. Each student is using a stencil and screen printing ink to create a figure of themselves in a position that depicts one of their top character traits. We are looking forward to sharing the end product at learning expo.

Health and Physical Education with Leigh

Physical Education: We are lucky enough to have a coach from Hockey South Australia coming to run a program in P.E. The students have been learning about dribbling, passing and shooting over the last few lessons.

Soccer Teams: Well done to all of our soccer teams on their teamwork and persistence over the season.
