TOKSAVE - Week 2 Term 3 2024

Lihir International School and School to Mine Campus

Principal: Mr Kevin Collins

Deputy Principal LIS: Ms Catherine Langusch

Deputy Principal STM: Mr David Wengip

From the Principal

Dear Parents and Caregivers,

On Tuesday, there was a public holiday to commemorate Remembrance Day. On this day, we remember and pay tribute to those Papua New Guineans who have fought and died in various wars over the years to allow us the freedoms we enjoy today.

Then on Friday, 25th of July, we have a public holiday in New Ireland Province to celebrate New Ireland Day.

Screen Time

Many parents are concerned about the amount of screen time their children have on various devices. Recent studies have outlined several detrimental effects that too much screen time can have on children and adolescents. The Australian Institute for Family Studies screen time guidelines, recommend:

  • no screen time for children younger than two years
  • no more than one hour per day for children aged 2-5 years.
  • no more than two hours of sedentary recreational screen time per day for children and young people aged 5-17 years (not including schoolwork).

The link below in the Toksave has more information on the guidelines and the effects of too much screen time.

From the Deputy Principal (STM)

The 2024 Batch 3 Trainees of the STM Work Ready Program have commenced their program this week Monday. Initially there was a total of 20 Trainees selected, however, 1 did not show up and another withdrew, so we now have 18 Trainees in the program. As usual, this program will run for 8 weeks and will end on the 13th of September. For the first time we had all the contracts for the Trainees prepared and signed before we started the program. We recognise and commend the work done by Ms. Ardie Samson and Team at Onboarding to achieve this and we look forward to having similar results in future going forward.

Former Work ready Students are continuing to come to STM to apply for entry level positions at Newmont.

Our FODE students are continuing their assessment as they work toward the end of the year when those eligible will sit their Grade 10 exams. We are closely following the events that are scheduled on the 2024 FODE Calander published by the National Department of Education.

The Kisimsave Library at STMC has been moved to LIS towards the end of last term.  The room has be converted to a classroom for the Work Ready program and FODE Study room.

Regards,

Mr. David Wengip
