Drummoyne Public School

Term 2 Week 9 Newsletter - Friday 28 June 2024

FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK

Dear Drummoyne PS Community,

Semester One Reports

Reading and discussing reports with your child/ren can evoke a range of emotions for both you and your child/ren. While it is natural to be invested in, and sometimes feel anxious about, the outcomes, it's crucial that we approach these reports with a constructive mindset.

With this in mind, I wanted to take a moment to share a are a few tips to help manage expectations and emotions:

  • Focus on Growth: Emphasise your child's progress and the effort they have put in over the term. Celebrate their achievements and acknowledge areas where they have shown improvement.
  • Constructive Conversations: When discussing the report with your child, focus on constructive feedback. Highlight strengths first and then talk about areas that need improvement in a supportive and encouraging manner.
  • Set Realistic Goals: Use the report as a tool to set realistic and achievable goals for the next term. This helps in creating a positive and proactive approach to learning.
  • Model Positive Attitudes: Children often mirror our attitudes and reactions. By staying calm and positive, you help your child feel more secure and less anxious about their performance.
  • Avoid Comparisons: Every child is unique and develops at their own pace. Avoid comparing your child’s performance to that of their peers or siblings, as this can lead to unnecessary stress and feelings of inadequacy.
  • Open Communication: If you have concerns or need clarification about your child's report, do not hesitate to reach out to their teacher. Open communication can provide insights and strategies to support your child’s learning journey.

Remember, student reports are just one piece of the puzzle. They provide a snapshot of your child’s academic performance but do not define their potential or capabilities.

P&C Trivia Night

I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to our organising committee, Emilie, Tanya and Belle, for organising such a fun and well-run trivia night. The event was a tremendous success, filled with laughter, friendly competition and community spirit. It was wonderful to see so many families, and some of our teachers, coming together. A big thank you also to MC Adam (and his partner in crime, Nicole) for leading the night’s frivolities - your positive energy was truly infectious!

Students Performing & Representing - Musicians, Choristers & Public Speakers

I have been fortunate enough, this week, to attend a number of events where our students have the opportunity to showcase their skills and talents to the wider community. I was very happy to see that so  many of our students are taking advantage of the opportunities available to them at our school and particularly proud to see them excel. Well done to our Junior and Senior bands, who performed at the Soiree on Monday evening; our Stage 2 and Stage 3 choirs, who blew us all away with their performances at our 3-6 Assembly; and to Ivy,  Ryan, Aleks and Ayden, who attended the regional finals for the Multicultural Perspectives Public Speaking Competition.

Stage 3 Camps

As I write this, our Stage students are on their way back from Canberra and Bathurst after an enriching, informative and fun-filled three days away. We will be sure to include a few recounts of their adventures in next week’s newsletter.

Parent-Teacher Interviews

I look forward to welcoming many of you to school for your parent-teacher interview/s next week. I am glad to see that so many of you have taken the opportunity to book in a time to meet with your child/ren’s teacher/s.

Regards,

John Nguyen

FROM THE DEPUTY'S DESK

It's Never Too Late to be Punctual

Does your family start the day with repeated orders and pleading to various members to get up, get dressed, have their breakfast, pack their school bag, brush their teeth, catch the bus?

Some children are always late to school, to classes, with assignments and the chaos of their lives influences their ability to learn. A calm, well organised start to the day and successful time management help develop the habits that lead to good learning. Effective time management leads to greater contentment.

Satisfaction with how we use our time is an important predictor of happiness. Time is the basis on which we operate our lives and if we’re happy with the way we manage time, we’re happy with our life. Being late is a way of life for many people. But good timekeeping can be learnt. For some, lateness is the only way they can get anything done. They have convinced themselves that racing to the deadline is the way they work best and leave everything to the last minute to get that adrenaline rush that charges them up to get the job done. They usually never count the cost of the worry, feelings of panic and lying awake at night as the deadline looms and they haven’t yet started.

How can you change these habits? Help the unpunctual members of your family take responsibility for their own lateness. It pays to begin when they are young but it’s never too late to start.

  • Set alarms, establish routines like who is first to use the bathroom, have breakfast ready and expect them to be out the door on time. One unpunctual member of the family can raise the stress levels for everyone.
  • Try “To Do” lists and learn to enjoy ticking off each task as they get it done.
  • Keep a detailed calendar.
  • If necessary, set your watch and clocks five minutes early.
  • Use your technology (computer or phone) to send you reminders.
  • Plan assignments with progress dates so they easily meet the deadline.
  • Aim to hand in work the day before it is due.

A Trip to the Past - student recount

On Wednesday 26th of June we went on a history excursion to Rouse Hill with 1/2A, 1/2D and 1/2K.

First, as soon as we got there, we had fruit break. I was happy because I was starving!

Next we were split into two even groups. My group went to the farm where we saw lots of cool stuff and I learnt so much about the past. All the animals were so cute.

Later on we swapped and our group went to the old classroom. It was nearly as fun as the farm. We wrote with the slate board and so much more.

Finally we had lunch and got back on the bus back to school. I cant wait to go again!

Debating Report Term 2-Week 9

This week Drummoyne debated against Newtown Public School in our third round. The topic was ‘The Olympics are a waste of money’.

The affirmative team, the Lyons, were the away team, with Isaac as 1st speaker, Oliver as 2nd speaker, Sophie as 3rd speaker and Ava as team advisor. They presented some great points and had clearly done some extensive research, driving their case home with a compelling team line, ‘Athletes shine as economies decline!’ Congratulations to all four students winning their debate.

The Hawkes were the home team. As the negative, they focused on both the short and  long term economic benefits of hosting the Olympics, presenting compelling evidence  to back up their arguments. The Hawkes’ team line was ‘Invest in the games, reap global gains’. Congratulations to 1st speaker Maeve, 2nd speaker Olive, 3rd speaker Eme and team advisor Shireen for putting up a great fight against Newtown with their powerful rebuttals.

Many thanks to Ava’s mum Ramona for providing transport. Also, thank you to our chairperson Aria, timekeeper David and meeters and greeters, David and Aria.

2024 Multicultural Perspectives Public Speaking Finals

This week four of our talented students competed in the stage based 2024 Multicultural Perspectives Public Speaking Finals. Congratulations to:

Stage 2: Ryan E & Ivy N

Stage 3: Aydin D & Aleks N

All our students did really well in their prepared & impromptu speeches. Special mention to Aydin who was awarded second place (highly commended). It was a very competitive finals round so we are very proud of all our students for holding their nerve & representing Drummoyne PS with dedication & pride.

In The Spotlight Dance Festival - Student recount

I am so grateful to be a part of the inaugural NSW Public Schools Boys Workshop Based Dance Ensemble, an initiative by the Arts Unit to encourage male dancers within public schools. After three days of intensive rehearsals last week, on Friday night our boys ensemble performed for the first time at 'In The Spotlight Dance Festival' at the Seymour Centre.

It was an amazing experience and I feel blessed to be a part of such a talented group of male dancers. I am looking forward to reuniting with the boys ensemble & performing again at the State Dance Festival in September and the Schools Spectacular in November.

    Trivia Night report

Last Friday night’s Trivia was a fabulous success! There were plenty of laughs, stories to tell and head scratching for trivia answers. We also loved having our Principal and some of our amazing teachers come along: Ms Davis, Ms Mavrakis, Ms Cantlay, Ms Hill, Ms Champion, Ms Apostolopoulos, Mrs Mooney & Ms Adams.

Team “Simon Says” were our winners for the second year in a row so we can’t wait for next year to see if they can win for the third time!

The ongoing success of the P&C relies on parents and family members, generously assisting and attending P&C activities/events. So, thank you to everyone for attending the event and a very big thank you to the following DPS parents and friends for helping organise the night; Emilie Rohmer, Belle Paton, Tania Adams, Rebecca Da Silveira, Adam Thompson, Nicole Thompson, Lisa Pender, Grant Melville, Wade Weirman, Natalie Thornhill, Meredith Taylor, Angela Farrell and Pip Walker.

We could not have done this event once again without the generosity of local businesses; a big thank you to Australian Vintage Wine, Sydney Brewery and Cupcake Factory for all your support.

Our community appreciates your efforts. The P&C raised an amazing $5246.81 which will be very helpful to John and the school this year. We can’t wait till our next event!

    Flexischools Parent Fee Update

As part of our school introductory offer with Flexischools, the parent order fee had been waived for the first few months. Flexischools have implemented two changes in the last week:

    • A discounted order fee of 22 cents for online canteen orders, per order, payable at the time the order is placed. This is discounted from their regular fee of 29 cents per order, and is also lower than the order fee we were paying to School 24 previously!
    • Topping up your account via a bank transfer has been free. Flexischools will also be sending communications in the next week around the fee being waived on debit card transactions as well. There is still a small surcharge on credit card and PayPal transactions. Please refer to their PDS for a breakdown of fees.

Thanks to our P&C for their efforts in negotiating this offer with Flexischools, for our school community. For any questions relating to your Flexischools account or fees, please contact the Flexischools support team on 1300 361 769.
