Burton Primary School Newsletter

Term 3, Week 5, 2023

From the Principal

Dear Parents/Caregivers,

NAPLAN 2023

New standards have been introduced to NAPLAN reporting this year. The 4 new standards replace the previous numerical NAPLAN reporting bands and national minimum standards. The changes to the standards sit alongside another change which saw NAPLAN testing move from Term 2 to Term 1.

Each individual student’s results for Numeracy, Reading, Writing and Conventions of Language are now measured as either Exceeding, Strong, Developing or Needs Additional Support. These 4 new proficiency standards provide clear information on student achievement. They are set at a challenging but reasonable level expected for the child at the time of NAPLAN testing, based mainly on what has been taught in previous years at school.

The school’s combined and total results in each year level are also now measured as Exceeding, Strong, Developing or Needs Additional Support.

Early analysis of our results show positive literacy results for the students in year 3, receiving an overall standard level of ‘strong’ for reading, writing and spelling. The year 5 cohort received an overall proficiency level of strong for reading and spelling. These results are an indication that our school improvement focus on literacy is having a positive impact on teacher pedagogy and student outcomes.

Overall results for Numeracy in year 3 and 5 show a proficiency level of ‘developing’. This indicates that students are working towards expectations at the time of testing.

Deeper analysis of results will be undertaken by staff in the upcoming weeks to identify areas of strength and development for students and shape the development of our 2024 School Improvement Plan (the SIP). After years of focus and pleasing improvements with literacy at Burton, it is time to consider shifting focus onto numeracy.

This year, Burton Primary School had 98% of year 3 students and 100% of year 5 students sit NAPLAN.

Further information about our school NAPLAN results- by year level- will be provided in the next newsletter.
